Anyway, someone had suggested Celestion Centuries and I duly had a
look - spec seems excellent - very light, sensitive etc but the
slight concern I have is one I have about another contender, the
Vintage 30 - the upper mid prominence (also pushing my budget a bit
too). Now this is where it gets a bit complicated, so apologies in
advance.
I'm lucky in that I've got an Engl Thunder 50 1x12 combo featuring a
V30, so I know something of the animal. I have used the combo on its
own and it's pretty good, esp. when I used last as part of a 6 piece
band with another guitarist. It really sung out on solos, due in no
small part to its mid-range bark. However, when I'm with my regular 4
pc. band, it doesn't work on its own for me and so I hook it up to one
of my Marshall 1936 cabs (G12T-75s I think?), and this makes a huge
and positive sonic difference - as you might expect.
So, first I tried running the Laney into the Engl V30 spkr and
straight away it sounded much, much better than the HH Invaders -
great, but I'm concerned that two V30s in the open back cab of the
Laney are going to provide too much of that mid-range bark. I tried
the Laney into the Marshall cab and it sounded great to me - there
seems to be a little bit of a dip in the mids and the bass tightened
up, but then again I know I'm comparing open and closed back cabs.
So then I started thinking about doing something that I've seen some
guys here talking about, and this is eventually coming to the point!,
what about pairing a V30 with a G12T-75? ...to achieve a balance
between the agressiveness of the V30 with the slightly more even (some
might say vanilla) tonality of the G12.
Does anyone think that could work, or am I heading for disaster?
Finally I should say that I can't afford to spend huge bucks here -
I'm hoping to get away with a maximum of 130 quid ex. postage.
TIA
Tim
Tim,
Have you had a listen to the Celestion Tone Selector site?
http://professional.celestion.com/guitar/features/tone/index.asp
I just had a browse myself and it gives a good indication of the sound you'd
expect for various musical genres and amps
Hope that helps.

Yep - fascinatin' innit!
I have an old Marshall MG50 solid state amp that I use for practice and for
rough (i.e. outdoors) gigs, which frankly sounded like crap until I replaced
the horrible original Park speaker with a Classic Lead 80.
All of a sudden it got much louder and sounded almost like a real amplifier!
I think I'll leave the Celestion Blues in my AC30 though.... ;-)
