Yes, the time for beer and curry and guitar chat in Manchester is here once
again.
Availability everyone? I'm thinking a Sunday, and fairly soon!

If someone promises to e-mail me with the details of the when and the where

wowsers, yes! I am up for that in a big way.

HOWEVER. due to current joblessness (and tearing around like a blue-arsed
fly going to interviews and trying to get another job) I won't be able to
make it if it's any time in the next 4/6 weeks. the money just won't stretch
that far... dammit.

I should be employed again within a week or so, but the next paycheck will
be a little way off.

ack! if too soon, no. if we're talking in about a month, then YES!

cheers,

Look on the bright side Paul. You have the opportunity to host
UKMGPU's (Travelling Simpson) 1-10. All you need is a
little forward planning.

Heh - that thought has just cheered me up no end (got throat infection -
DTT gig pulled cos I'm the singer - buggered up DTTs chances of getting a
gig at same place again - DTT and Paul not happy). Well spotted, and
thanks! Dates for the Travelling Simpson UKMGPU Roadshow to be posted as
soon as i get them :-)

Yeah, be nice to see you again a bit nearer to home territory Clive :-) A
few weeks would let me find my feet in my new job too and let me find out
which Sundays I'll have free.

Worry ye not... you might have a southerner to cope with!
S'pose I'd better practice my Manc accent...

Let me know when it is - might be able to persuade my 'guide' (ex-Manc,
now a southerner) to come with me... come to think of it, I might be
able to wangle a bed for the night at her sister's!

Hey, I went to Liverpool Uni too. I did Mechanical Engineering and Advanced
Manufacturing with lasers between 1994 - 2000. You weren't an Engineer or
in the History dept. during that time were you?

Recognised the address :-)
Was there from 1992-1995 in the Electrical Engineering dept. Many
nights spent in the AJ and so on. Was in a band called COTTON at the
time - played mainly covers stuff around Liverpool, at the halls and
stuff.
Used to use the computer room in the Mech Eng building before they
built the 24 hour one so you may have seen me around.

Small world...

Aha! A 'Sparky'! :-) Or as you lot were known in certain circles in Mech
Eng, "masters of the mysterious flashing blue mystical forces only the few
understand and control". As you may have guessed, Electrical Engineering
was never my strongest subject :-) I spent many a confused lab session in
the Frankenstein laboratory behind the main Elec Eng tower - you know, the
one that looks like a 1950s power station inside.

Remember the grim bunch that used to run the AJ? - well, they've now gone.
It's just not the same without Sid growling at you from behind the bar when
you dared to commit a social atrocity like actually ordering a drink or
something...

So that would give us the 4th, or the 11th, depending upon Vinny's
availability - are we using the same venue (was it the thirsty scholar ?-
but next door to the one with the flooded cellar) as that seemed easy enough
to find, and I believe had suitable beverages for the more discerning
drinkers.

Either day should be fine for me, so lets see who's available and take it
from there.

Sparky indeed!
EEng wasn't my forte either, hence the third. Get what I did my final
project on though; analyzing guitar pickups.
I built a test to mimic a guitar and tested different pickups at
different points on the test rig and analyzed the frequency response.
Learnt tons, forgot to write any of it down.

That '50s power station' was actually a state of the art something or
other for testing high voltage arcing. Or something.

Sid ! What a lad. Grim indeed. Ever eat there?

You're dead right about the Gazette - I wrote a blatantly biased
review, put it in another name and got my mate (Ents Editor or
something) to put it in for me. Tee hee!

Manchester PU should be top.

Hmmm, we've more in common than I thought - I too got a 'Carol Vorderman'
(3rd in Mech Eng, in my defence I had tonsilitis during the finals and
missed 2 of them) and my final project involved a guitar pickup - basically
an experiment into a self-tuning guitar string.

> That '50s power station' was actually a state of the art something or

State of the art?! Looks like something only the Russians would be running
these days. Big 'Thunderbirds'-style panels of blinking lights everywhere,
old fashioned big-handled switches, three-phase mains controls, grey control
panels and that funny shade of green on the walls you only get in military
installations and mental institutions... The equipment might be state of the
art but whoever did the decor had a definite cold war motif in mind.

> Sid ! What a lad. Grim indeed. Ever eat there?

Only the once, and that was quite enough.

Heh - nice one! Ah, nepotism... :-)

Looking forward to it! See http://www.ukmg.org.uk/ukmgpu3/home.html for
pics from the last Manchester meeting (and bear in mind most of the people
there on the day had never met in person before). I still don't know if
I'll be able to make it (hurry it up ICL admin people), but if someone can
e-mail me with the time and place I'll do everything in my power to get
there. I should also have finished the course of antibiotics that are
crusading against my throat and chest infection as I type this. Don't know
what's worse - the groggy crap feeling that the pills give you or the fact
that I can't go out drinking 'til I've finished them... :-(

Hmm I kind of liked the Thunderbirds touch? Ever eat in the EEng cafe
hidden away in post grad land? (Notice an eating theme here). It was
total nerdism. Remember when they tried to update the paint scheme by
painting it the same colour as before? Well played uni people!

Bad news ! You have to get cured. Looked at the pictures and every one
seemed to be getting along famously.
I can see why someone's proposed Sunday though - imagine a group of GAS
crazed slightly pissed guitarists spurring each other on on a Saturday
afternoon to new heights of purchasing. Hmm.

Put up another message in this forum under the thread 'First gig with
new band update'.

Went bloody well. Damned surprised actually. One of those gigs where
everyone comes up to you afterwards and tells you how well it went.

The bass player, drummer and myself had not played live for 2 years ish
and never together before, and the singer had never sang live ever, so
to have it go as well as it did was a real high.

Best gig I've ever done actually - totally enjoyed it and I'm just
worried I've had my lot now and I'll never do another that good ! Us
artistes eh, never happy.
