Hi folks,

I just received a US guitar shop brochure and I saw that all the Gibson
and Epiphone SG and Les Paul Specials are shown with humbuckers. Is this
the end of the single coil at Gibson?

Some of the historic reissues still use P90s.
(e.g. the '52, '54 and '56 Les Paul Goldtops and the '54 "Black Beauty"
which has a P90 and an Alnico V single coil.)
However they're not exactly cheap (or readily available) over here.

I bought a brand new Gibson with P90s - a double-cut "Les Paul Junior
Special" (a Junior with 2 pickups) for £649 (with gig-bag) a couple of
months ago.

There are several P90-equipped Gibson models available for around that price
or less. The "Les Paul Melody Maker" (one P90) is priced at less than £500.

Don't even worry about the SG range - Gibson have treated the model with a
total lack of respect for over thirty years. They just use whatever they
have in the parts bins, it seems.

Yeh - reputedly. Notice the buyer has hidden his identity. What a con. That
guitar is worth nothing like that money without concrete evidence of it's
supposed former keeper - even then it seems a bit overpriced. Just my two
penneth....

Well a very limited-run of a fairly unique 42-year-old guitar is going to
have a significant value just from a historical viewpoint (it was after all
made in the brief period when Gibson stopped making "real" Les Pauls),
although it has to be said that one's been refinished, but I'd have said
Ł15k tops, more likely Ł10k. And an unsubstantiated famous owner shouldn't
really add much to that, I mean Jimmy Page must have sold hundreds of
guitars over the years, what's the big deal? If it was the main cherry
sunburst LP he used to gig with Zeppelin I can maybe see the attraction...
anyway I guess that's what Ebay is all about :-)

Remember that Epiphone is just a trade name for guitars licence built
by whichever far-eastern manufacturer is cheapest (Like Squiers that
have come from at least three countries and several more
manufacturers!). If they are not using P90s it is because they can
make a better profit by not using them.

Anything Gibson itself does will be separate, and Gibson not using
'Gods Own Pickup' is unlikely. If they do stop then they deserve to
be spanked severely with a copy of Angling Times.

As for $35K for a Jimmy Page SG Custom, I don't even remember him
using one. He may have owned one but it was hardly a major part of his
career. He did use a three pickup Les Paul custom but that got nicked.

It isn't that unlikely a scenario, though, is it?

Fender have often stopped producing what they have produced so well -
i.e. a good Strat when they went for the three-bolt neck.

It all depends if there's a profit in it. Unless the production of
P90s shows one then thgey may well become the province of sig model
and custom shop model owners.

Nothing that Gibson or Fender does should never surprise us. ;)

Well, that's the vintage guitar market for you.

I wonder what the provenance on this guitar is?

Steve.

To be fair on Fender, there's nothing wrong with a three bolt neck
providing that it's executed properly. They didn't do 'em so well in the
seventies, but a lot of G&L's catalouge employs a three bolt neck, and
it's not as a cost cutting measure.

To be fair on Fender, I was really griping about the whole guitar.

It was a pig IMO and an insult to Leo Fender.

I know people who actually like these and one guy who even collects
them, and they love them.

To each his own.
