Hi All,

Well - I didn't manage to find a Les Paul this weekend that I thought was
worth the money. I saw a good selection and they all seemed overpriced for
what they were. None of them really jumped out and said "take me home".

So I'm still looking......

I spoke to a guy last night who has a Les Paul copy made by Sid Poole up for
grabs ands I may well go and have a look at it. The spec is mahogany body w/
hand carved highly flamed maple cap, mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard,
hand wound Tom Holms humbuckers - basically yer standard LP, but "better".

I did a little research on the web and all I can found out is that Sid Poole
is a highly respected British Luthier who is known for his high quality hand
made LP clones.

Does anyone know any more than this ?

Cheers,

Al.

IIRC, Sid's based in the Medway area...
He's built LP "copies" for Slash & recently designed the lastest range of
Westone guitars (the Cutlass & Corvair)...

A very talented chap...

Jesus, Ross - that was a quick reply - thanks.

I just had a chat with Sid on the phone - very interesting guy as well - he
remembers building this guitar very well.

I'm definitely going to go and see this guitar - hopefully tonight.

Now - i just have another 7 hours of work to wade through.

He builds lots of guitars other than LP copies. He was also responsible
for the design of the Westone Cutlass range which is made in the Status
bass factory. There was a review of one of his guitars in Guitarist a couple
of years back. The workmanship and playability was top notch.

I also know that Slim Hamster's Hamstercaster was a Poole guitar - why I
know that is anyone's guess.
By all accounts his work is totally superb and very high quality - I'd say
its worth checking out.
have you considered John Birch's LP copies, by the way? Some of his stuff is
absolutely cracking, I owned a Birch LP back in the late 70s early 80s and
really wish I'd never gotten rid.

Dave.

Isn't (or wasn't) John Birch in jail for something to do with business fraud?
I have a funny feeling it was he, or one of his contemporaries, got into
financial trouble and started trying to compete with the Japanese by churning
out cheap guitars - only to get deeper into the financial mire and ending up
inside. Anyone know?

I've no idea. If so then it's a shame as Birch certainly knew how to make a
guitar. The pickups they used were something else, you could dial in just
about any tone from the damned things. My old LP copy was finished in Blue
burst which was something of a Birch trademark as I recall, and it had an
action to die for. Fab neck, great fretting and it could sustain for days.
I'm coming over all wistfull....

I wouldn't call his guitars "clones". He certainly does a model which is in
the Les Paul style, but it is in no sense a copy. His instruments are a joy
to play.

Apart from that, Sid has worked with Westone to produce the designs for
their mid-range guitars, and he still does set-up repair and work. He has
set up a couple of guitars for me.which are unrecognisably good compared to
the way they were before.

Well - I went to see the guitar, and am now the proud owner of a custom made
59 Sid Paul, er....Les Poole, er.............well- you get the idea.

I'm having a tough time posting this message as I just want to shut up and
play the damn thing. It's almost 10pm so the neighbours are spared me
cranking up the valve amp right now - just POD and cans for the time being

It's an absolute beauty. Gorgeous bookmatched, highly flamed maple top (no
idea whether it's AAA or AAAAAAAA - who cares - it's absolutely
lovely).Fantastic single piece mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard,
abalone inlays, aged binding, grover tuners, Tom Holms handmade pickups. Top
class fretwork, just right on the standard Gibson scale length.

Fantastic - the fit and finish is first rate, and the guitar is absolutely
mint condition. It looks like it has just been made - incredible - not a
mark or a scratch or any signs of wear at all. It looks brand spanking new.

The pickups are just awesome. I have already nailed Clapton's Cream sound -
just like that. The two humbuckers are also split with push/pull pots to
give that single coily vibe if required as well. I can get fanstastic
sparkly clean going to a mean growl just by the volume knob, and there is
more "graunch" that you can shake a stick at. This thing just sings.

Sorry about all the adjectives in this post - I am just gobsmacked at the
quality of the workmanship and playability of this guitar.

Should I get any spare time over the next week or so, I'll tell you more as
I get to know the thing.

Right now however - as the great man once said "Shut up and play yer guitar"

Sounds yummy! Next time you're down this way stick it in the car and bring
it over so I can have a play :-)

Incidentally since Sunday night I'm also the proud owner of a new
instrument, a balalaika! A 6-string, 3-course triangular lute-ish thing
tuned EEA (very odd tuning that) it's remarkably easy to play and
melancholy drony stuff loosely in the style of Led Zep 3 seems to come out
of it almost unbidden. The only problem now is getting a case for the darn
thing...

Cool. Do you have to wear the fur hat and baggy Cossackpants to play the
thing though ?

Well.......I had to part with £1,200 to take her home. And you know what -
I'd happily have paid more. I did try and negotiate - but the seller and I
kind of looked each other and laughed. We both knew it was a fair price.
(Brand new Hiscox case too)

I spoke to Sid Poole, and a new one from him would be a minimum of £2,000 to
£2,500 today. And this one is absolutely perfect. I spent an hour or so last
night just trying to find a single scratch, nick or dent. Nothing.

I think it was a great deal. The good flame topped (real flame maple - not
photo printed) Gibson 59 reissues were about $7,000 IIRC, and even a new
Custom Black Beauty (which is what I started out looking for) is £2,000
these days. In Denmark Street, they are looking well over a grand for beat
up LPs if they are a few years old.

I'll bring this little sweetheart along to the uk.m.g.p.u.2 so you can all
have a look.

On a side note - if anyone is looking for a 61 SG Special, or a 59?? ES 225,
then the guy I bought the Sid Poole from is selling off some of his
Gibsons - email me if you want the phone number. (Absolutely stonking
private collection of guitars and amps as well.) I may well go and get the
SG myself next month however if it's still there, and if I can convince the
wife that I need another guitar.

I will post a full review of the key component - the tone - after this
weekend. Suffice to say, I was up most of last night with the headphones on.
I found myself actually laughing out loud at some points - man, those Tom
Holms pickups just rock - and I am only just beginning to explore the tones
available. I think I can safely say that i have found the tone that has been
going around in my head for the last few years howver.

Of course! To get the proper feel you also have to playing it while
standing on the back of a grey stallion that's jumping through hoops of
fire...
