However the file sizes are a bit big for upload to YouTube.
Being a bit of a novice at manipulating video files, I need some help?
Can anyone suggest some (free) software that will enable me to downsize the
video files?
Any (legal or physically possible) advice gratefully received (as long as it
doesn't include meat tenderisers)

for an ipod then upload to youtube.

run it through windows movie maker?
Set the final size to be 99mb and let it re encode.
I've donw that a few times.

I've found Handbrake to be pretty handy for video conversions. It
comes with a few useful presets (none for youtube unfortunately), but
you can still set a target file size, file type, change resolution,
and change bit rate. I'm sure someone more au fait with youtube
uploading can suggest what the ideal resolution, bit rate and file
type would be.

Unfortunately there isn't a direct d/l link to Super. Don't d/l AVS by
mistake it's not freeware.

There's some software I often use called Virtualdub. Add to it the
filter package Avisync and the FFDshow codecs and you will be able to
edit anything.
Just one piece of advice, though. Beware AVI if you are using 16:9,
because it is an obsolete format and has no support for the aspect
ratio flag. (apart from the AVI format used by digital video). This
lead to extensive problems with the video I took last year.
These days I stick to mpg and mp4.
If you are looking for a good editor, I can recommend the ulead/corel
family of video editors. You can pick up the older versions for
around a tenner, and this is the way I started.

H264 is better at high compression than DivX. However, YouTube now
lets you load huge files (as long as they aren't more than 10 minutes
long) so that you can upload HD as 720p. I usually encode to 720p wmv
via Videostudio 12 if I'm uploading HD.
And here's an example. You'll have to click the HD to see it in full
HD. Mr. Simpson, please take note of Mr. Lynch's repertoire for next
