I have a grade 5 in electric guitar. I also have junior bronze, silver
and gold medals and my performers award. I was on the RGT website last
night and there exams where totaly different to mine. They used chords
and scales where mine used 3 pieces of music of my choice and i played
some chords at random when asked. Answered questions on the guitar
theory. The exams where called nationwide music exams. I also read on
the RGT website thyat grade 5 is a vocational qualification is this
true. Also what are the requirements for grade 6 i was told the solo
from enter sandman was one of them.

There are a couple of exams you can do. There are the RGT exams and
Rockschool. I think the RGT exams are a bit more in-depth from looking at
the syllabus. I would raise an eyebrow at anything that claimed to be a
vocational qualification for guitar. You can make money gigging from 3
chords if you are so inclined, there is no 'level' that you have to be at.
As far as the real professional work goes, no one is going to hire you on
the basis of an exam, it's all word of mouth and who you know.
I'll bet Stevie Ray Vaughan couldn't have passed grade 4 RGT but he's a hero
and he sounds better than a lot of guys who know melodic minor scales.

Cheers,
Justin

Hi John,
I am taking the RGT graded guitar exams, I have recently taken Grade5. The
exams are set by the London College of Music and Media (LCMM). The syllabus
is based on chord knowledge, scales, arpeggios and the practical application
of these. Most of the marks are gained on the rhythm section and the lead
playing section. The lead part is basically improvisation over a chord chart
played by the examiner. There is also a section on theory and ear training.
the solo from enter sandman would not be part of the exam as the lead
playing is not based on set pieces, it is improvisational based on the
scales and arpeggios relevant to that grade. You may be thinking of
Rockschool exams that are based more on set pieces. I hope this helps

Steve

They are different to Classical exams. You ask for the Grade 5
performance book which lists a number of pieces you must learn. You
then pick 1 old, 1 modern and 1 abstract piece from each. You may
need to sing along , play chords, demo sight reading and indicate
tempo.. arpeggios etc.. then there is the theory exam...

That sounds like the ABRSM or Trinity Classical guitar exam. The OP is
asking about pop/rock guitar exams - like Rockschool and RGT.

The cirtificate i got had Nationwide Music Exams on it and the grade
and a signiture in fancy writing on it. These exams where usually in
summer and my teachers would fill in an entry sheet. I had three
pieces which where ones we had done in the lessons. And i had to learn
all the chords and the theory of the guitar. I wanted to know if
anyone else had done them as later in the year i wish to return to my
guitar lessons.
