I have an old 3rd rate ES-335 copy (Satellite branded, about 25 years old -
anyone know anything 'bout them?) with a duff p/u selecter switch. I have a
replacement, but I can't figure out how to get at the wiring.
The cables in the guitar are so short that I can't pull any individual item
out the 'f' hole - but if I undo everything to get them out, I can't re-fit
as my fingers are *way* to fat & short to reach inside the body.
What is the technique??
Thanks
Julian
Say I'm tuning my guitar,
G-------0------
D-------5------ ;this is in tune.
G-------7-------
D-------0------- ;this is out of tune
It just get worse as you go up the neck.
Is it possible to have intination off at the nut or tuning peggs?
On my guitar at the bidge there are little screws that go in and out, how do
you guys test you intination?
thanks for the help,
Craig
Normal techniques include doing things like putting a straw over the pot.
shafts (obviously after you've taken off the knobs, nuts, washers etc. and
or tying a small piece of thread (strong) to teh pot. shaft and leaving the
end of the thread through the holes in the body where you need the pots etc
to go back to. Look on www.stewmac.com for som other hints.
cheers

Check out Steve Cobham's website for a great guide to setting your
intonation (http://users.powernet.co.uk/guitars/index.html).
The basic trick is to compare the 12th fret fretted note & 12th fret
harmonic note for each string (start with the high E):
If the fretted note is flat, turn the saddle's intonation screw anti-
clockwise (i.e undo it) to move the saddle forwards. Keep checking the
two notes & repeat the above until they are the same pitch.
Points to remember:
1) Use a tuner!
2) Install new strings & stretch them properly.
3) FFF - "Fret, Flat, Forward"

Try removing the rear pickup...
Many 335 types have a notch cut out of the centre block at this point -
should give you plenty of space.
Good luck!
Remove the pickups first and that gives you access inside. Then take each
pot nut off in turn - carefully avoiding letting the pot fall inside the
guitar, tie a piece of thread around the pot thread and then gently pull
the pots and the thread out through the pick-up holes. That way, the thread
will
be left in place to allow you to pull the pots back in when you rewire.
Same trick applies to the switch.

That's about the size of it.
Remember, you may put the intonation totally out of whack if you muck
it up, but whatever state it gets into you won't have damaged
anything.
BTW, use the correct size screwdriver to adjust the adjustment screws
on the bridge saddles - whatever type of bridge you're adjusting -
otherwise you'll chew the slots up, and that *is* permanent damage,
albeit fairly easily sorted.
Mind you, ever tried to get stuffed-up hex head grub screws out of a
Fender bridge saddle.......?
Steve.

Thanks for all the advice, guys.
I managed to get the switch replaced last night, only needing to move it and
2 of the pots. Result? Terrific!!
I plugged it in, switched to front pu, and started some gentle jazzish
picking - the sound was like honey.
It may be an old copy, but as my usual luthier (Jimmy Egypt - some of you
will know him) said, 'even a crap guitar will mellow and sound ok after 30
years'.
A very happy Julian
