It's like this: I've got this guitar, a Yamaha FG300A acoustic that I
played around £50 for. Now, I know it's not a lot, and it's not worth
a lot either - but I feel it could be a slightly better instrument
than it currently is. It needs a restring - intonation on top two is
out - and so I thought after my exams (two weeks) I'd take it to a
tech of some form to give it a relatively good once over. Nothing too
expensive - just a restring, a bit of a service, and (if possible)
getting the action lowered - it's quite high compared to a friend's
Fender, and many other nice acoustics I've tried, and am curious to
see if it would be possible to lower it. The previous owner played
slide on it, so the action could have been raised.

I'm basically based in Cambridge, so anywhere reachable on foot from
the town centre, about 30 mins walk max would be useful to know of. Do
you know anyone I could take the thing to? It's not a fantastic
instrument, but I feel I could just give it a service and make it
slightly better and more playable.

Thoughts?

Drum and Guitar, on Norfolk Street. I think they get setups done by Rich
Bartram in Ely, who built my electric.

Pete Towers, 17 Water Street, Chesterton. Just near the Green Dragon Pub, so a nice stroll along the river
then, should be almost exactly 30 minutes!!

Good guy, plays mean slide guitar on a 64 Burns(?), a regular in the Good Question band on the first Friday in
the month at the Boatrace.

Highly recommended - ring 01223 350735

You might try either Mark's Music or Ken Stevens Music on King Street (they
both use the same guy, I don't know what his name is). He did a good job on
restring/setup/intonation of my Yamaha 335 copy. Can't remember the cost but
it was reasonable, 20 quid or so maybe.
