Haven't seen the videos.
Ian
I've bought the Complete Bluesman videotape. I think Argent's in
Denmark St, London were selling it slightly cheaper than advertised and
it had a funny cover and he's ALWAYS in those mags, so I thought "why
not?"
It's very informal and Steve is possibly the nicest guy ever to lay
down a videotape course. He constantly makes reassuring comments and
comes across as a knowledgable chap without being big-headed in the
slightest. It's a beginner's level tape and I found it very good,
having just come back to the axe after way too much time off. I
especially appreciated Steve's small tips and shortcuts, which SO many
guitarists fail to mention...I have a lot of videos and some say "here
play this" followed by an insane Yngwiephonic line.
Tab is on screen which is to be expected and camera work is
consistently solid. It also has that stuff that makes the world go
round: humour!! Steve never takes it too seriously, but relies upon his
genuineness and confidence to make it all work. He's no stern
taskmaster, and this has the effect of making one *want* to play,
rather than being forced to play. I believe that if one feels
comfortable with the teacher (whatever the subject), then anything is
possible.
I would have liked to have seen him really let rip, but I suppose he
may not want to daunt his audience, so he only plays what he's taught
in the lessons.
On the basis of this tape I may buy others, but the lack of him playing
(and thus inspiring me to practice) is a bit of a shame. I have the
first Eric Johnson video and that inspires me to heaven and back but I
can't play any of the stuff! Somebody needs to address this issue, i.e.
inspiring without being ridiculously hard.
Again, in agreement with that other post, Steve expects a lot from
students, but provides you with the tools to get there on your own. The
last thing anyone should look for is a magic pill; the video isn't that
(thankfully) but it is a comprehensive introduction to the blues,
presented in a refreshingly laid-back style.
