Guitarist magazine did a review of a number of earplugs a few months
back. Sorry can't remember the exact issue.

I use the semisolid plugs by "E.A.R." (Dunno what it stands for,
Earole Acoustic Research or something). They look sort of like a
group of mushrooms growing on top of one another. Sort of like this
=)))
Except that the flanges (the brackets) get smaller as they go up. I
also have some of the foam ones, but they're not much use as they
knock out everything - more for sleeping, I think. Anyway, the ones
I'm talking about are musician's earplugs, and let in enough sound for
you to know what's going on without ending up with the testcard test
tone in both ears at the end of the night. They are very comfortable
to wear, reusable. Caveats - they cost more than the foam ones, but
you have to replace the foam ones after a month because they lose
their springiness. You also have to learn to insert them properly,
because if you put them in wrong they will start hurting after about a
minute.

Perhaps we should ask Adrian. Adrian, what was the issue you reviewed
the earplugs in? Adrian? I SAID, WHAT WAS THE ISSUE WITH THE
EARPLUGS IN!!! ADRIAN!!! TAKE THEM OUT!!!! I SAID TAKE THEM...
Oh never mind.
I'm currently using Doc's Pro Plugs (available from Strings Direct) -
you need to check the size of your auricle first & buy the ones that
match (range from x-small to x-large I think).
They come in both vented & non-vented versions - I use the vented
which attenutates the extreme frequencies but still lets me hear
reasonably clearly.
I've still got a set of the EAR plugs (like Steve Dix), but I'm not
too keen on the way they stick out of the ears... my ears stick out
enough, thanks! :-)

Ross.

One of the reasons I bought them is because they do stick out a good
way from your ear, hence avoiding any embarrasing visits to
outpatients to have them removed.

Any! Unless you or your band plays very quietly use any earlpugs you
can. If you have the funds gets some ER09s

Got some called "North Sonic II Hearing Protectors", similar to the
E.A.R. ones. Got them from the local sports/shooting shop about 10
years ago and they certainly do the job, I'd be deaf by now without
them, although you know you've done a good (loud) gig when you're ears
are ringing afterwards WITH the plugs in!

I'm going to join everyone else and recommend both Etymotic and
Pro-Plugs.
(http://www.etymotic.com/ and http://www.proplugs.com/ respectively).
If I had plenty of money, or was doing a lot more playing/listening I
would get the Etymotic custom made plugs, with the 15 dB filter.
(annoyingly they cost about 150 pounds all-in over here, and about 100
dollars all-in in the USA, but it's still a small price compared to
the cost of guitars, amps etc.)
Instead I have the one-size fits all ER20s, and Pro Plugs. Both have
their advantages and disadvantages - I think the ER20s have a better
overall sound, but the pro plugs are useful if you only want a bit
taken off, or don't want the bass cut (they tend to do nothing at the
lower end, then apply a reasonably flat cut higher up).
Someone mentioned the possibility of ear plugs compacting wax - if
this is a worry, the pro plugs would be better, as they don't really
do into the ear canal, just across the opening. However, I think that
the compacting effect will be minimal if you insert the plugs properly
with either pair, and is probably offset by the extra wax which would
be produced if you weren't wearing plugs!
I got my ER20s from these people:
http://www.hearingelectronics.co.uk/ and they do supply by post.
Somewhere I should have the details of the UK distributor, if you want
to find a closer source to you (Cambridge-ish, if I remember
correctly) - which would definitely be an issue if you wanted the
custom made ones.
Pro plugs do come in different sizes, so you want to find an actual
shop. They are also sold for watersports, so try dive shops etc. too.
I got mine from the percussion bit of Footes in London. (having
trekked round most of the guitar shops going "have you got musicians
earplugs?", "pardon", "I said, have you got musicians earplugs?", "no,
sorry mate". The "pardon" bit *is true* for most of them!!).
HOPE THAT HELPS,

<snip rest of informative post>
Just posting up to agree whole-heartedly Bernie.
I use ER20's myself and find them excellent. If I was playing more than
a couple of times a week I'd certainly think about upgrading to the
fitted ones, but at only 15 quid a pair I think the ER20's are great.
I manage to get mine from <http://www.musicshipping.co.uk/> in
Kidderminster - the folks there are really helpful.
All the best
