Hello,

I wonder if anybody could help me. I was wandering round the Marshall
website and I come across the Powerbrake PB100 and read the description and
it sounds like a really good idea, turning your amp up full without annoying
the neighbours and getting a lovely tone from your amp to boot.

The link is
http://www.marshallamps.com/images/products/powerbrake/powerbrake.html

Does anybody have any experience with these units or similar units.

Thanks for any reply in advance

I borrowed one to try my Sound City 120 full up, into a 4x12 in my box
room, to see if it would overdrive. Slightly warmed up sound, very
little distortion at all. I bought the amp off a bass player, so a
good choice for bass, just loud and mainly clean sound flat out
(excluding speaker distortion). I heard the PB doesn't preserve all
the nuances of the amp full up, cone breakup for instance, but there
are fewer simpler alternatives available?

What other alternatives are there ? I'm trying to find something to
take the volume out of my Laney LC15 for use at home. Had some
discussion with a company in Finland / Sweeden about a Koch version of
the Marshall Powerbrake, but couldn't find any other manufacturers that
did them. Who do you know of that I could have a look at ?

Palmer used to do a version, but it was very expensive. I think the Marshall
is the least expensive. There used to be a device around called a Scholtz
Powersoak, but that damaged valve amps as it was purely resistive. It was
also known as the the Scholtz ToneSuck due to its dubious sound quality.

Take a look at the THD Electronics Hotplate (www.thdelectronics.com) - I
think it may be a bit on the steep side being American and all that.

I thought the Laney had a master volume? The Powerbrakes are usually
for amps with no master volume control (like my Sound City)? I know
there's distortion from the power amp section being driven, but if you
want that you'll probably want the cone break-up sound as well? You
might be as well to build a speaker 'coffin' if you want it for
recording?
