I know nothing about guitars but my teenage daughter would like one
and I wondered if you could suggest a starter package, either bought
as a pack or as individual items.
We live near Southampton but would happily buy from the internet if
recommended.
Thanks
what are you prepared to spend?
what music is she interested in playing?

I wouldn't go over the top, as with any instrument, she may give up in a few
months.
One thing I'd definitely recommend for a starter (and a girl for that
matter) is a guitar with a reasonably low action and light guage strings,
since starting on a guitar can be pretty tough on the fingers.
One of my guitars is a Gibson SG copy by a company called Westfield, and to
be honest since I only paid just over a ton for it on Ebay, it's not a bad
guitar at all. ie: decent finish, fingerboard, machine heads don't slip out
of tune too easily, sounds OK, etc.
In fact, just had a look on Ebay, and there's a Westfield SG package,
complete with amp, tuner & bag.. and even a girly in the pic too!

I was thinking around £200 to £250 she has mentioned the 'fender
package' in argos but I know nothing about it. She definitely wants a
standard shaped guitar.
Thanks

Hi and welcome!
I'd go a little against what's been mentioned already and find a decent
beginners pack.
A nice guitar will be something to feel proud of and an incentive to play.
I've know too many kids who could have been really good give up because they
play shat guitars.
You don't need to spend the earth, but there's no way in hell I'd go NEAR
argos for a guitar and would also avoid Westfield like the plague too -
You'll be lucky if it plays across the neck without needing a fret
job...I've not played one yet that's been even vaguely good...
Check out www.guitars.co.uk - they are a very beginner-focused site (perhaps
too much, but that's another story!). Have a poke around there and you can
always call the shop - Ask for Rich (the owner) or Woz (the manger) and
they'll see you right!
Cheers,
James
I saw this lot playing guitars on German TV lezte woche
http://www.vanilla-ninja.de/ in a Corrs/rock sort of way. I'd recommend a
Yamaha Pacifica guitar and a Kustom amp with reverb and FX or a Roland
MicroCube amp.

There are good and bad individual guitars in every make, even the top
name brands. This makes buying from the internet a bit of a minefield;
OK if you can afford a gamble but dodgy otherwise.
You really need to find someone near you who knows a bit about guitars
and who you can trust. Take them with you to a music shop and try the
guitars. You may pay a little more than the internet or Argos but you'll
get what you pay for - unseen, the guitar you buy will probably not feel
the same as the guitar you buy, and the way it feels to play is vital to
the beginner, far more than looks or name.
Take a look at the Vintage range, as well as Yamaha and Ibanez for
starter guitars. IMO the guitar is more important than the amp at this
stage; settle for a cheap amp but make sure the guitar, the bit that the
fingers touch, is the best you can afford.
I fought a nasty cheap copy guitar (which I still have) for years before
switching to bass. This year I bought a decent copy guitar, and realised
how bad my original one had been! If I'd had a good guitar to begin with
I'd probably be a far better player now.
