Our Family sang this song for years with slightly different lyrics:
“There’s an old, old castle in Scotland
With a strange love story to tell
Of a lassie who lived in the castle
And he laddie who loved her so well.
“When they met, the bagpipes were playing,
And a pale moon shone overhead.
It was heaven they found there together
And they vowed come the morning to wed.
“But my story grows queer*
For the Lassie disappeared.
Poor laddie he shed bitter tears.
The townspeople there say the castle has been bare
For hundreds and hundreds of years!”
“Now the lad still waits for his lassie,
All alone in their rendezvous.
By that Old Haunted Castle in Scotland
As he dreams of he love once he knew,
As he dreams of the love once he knew.”
*or weird
Now does anyone know the origin of this song? My folks taught it to all of us and I vaguely remember it may have come from a radio show or something. Tried googling the woes and turned up your posts but doesn’t seem to be an “auld Scottish Song”. Beautiful, haunting tune!
