Am I missing something here? An American folk artist is coming to the UK and
someone advertises the fact on a UK folk group, how is that spam?

Jonathan.

You're missing several years of grotesque net abuse by these two creeps.

Dear Friends,
I was sorry to see this letter, as I just arrived in your county a few days
ago. It seems to me that some one must have confused Tony's post with
another poster as we certainly are not in any way
spamers. I'm very happy to be a guest in your country and do not want to
turn any one off from coming to my shows.
I thought that I should reply just in case any readers get the wrong first
impressions. As far as Tony posting a wee bit of PR about my tour, he was
just trying to get the word out as any one would when trying to promote any
event.
I do hope that I get a chance to meet some of you while I'm here and perhaps
share a song or two.

Your Truly,
Rik Palieri
Folk Singer, Song Writer
and writer for
Sing Out !

Just to put the story right from my point of view (Tony) I send out
information to folk enthusiasts out friendship not from a money making
venture. I get my kicks out of presenting a folk music programme on local
radio and out of a love of the music.

I find the language used in this letter to be puerile and in bad taste and
not the usual language that one expects from the true folk fan.

I also find it insulting that one individual that is afraid to put his true
internet address is trying to tell other what they should, or not do.

Utter crap.

Jack has a posting syle which occasionally upsets less robust
souls but in all respects he is a model citizen of the Usenet. He
uses a dedicated mailbox at a valid domain as an anti-spam filter
- unlike many, he does his spam-trapping in a way which complies
with RFCs and has no negative implications for resources.

However, at the foot of every post of his that I've ever seen, he
attaches his name and full address, telephone number and website
URL, and he has a long history of sharing information and offering
help and useful discussion on a wide variety of subjects in this
newsgroup. So the accusation that he posts anonymously is
therefore complete f*ckwittery, especially when made by someone
whose only contribution to this group is to post blatant plugs for
some venture or other, usually totally ignoring the group charter.

Incidentally, since you are making accusations of Netiquette
violation - your post is guilty of breaches of Netiquette on the
following counts:

a) upside down quoting
b) waste of bandwidth by failure to trim quotes properly
c) lack of sig separator

Glass house, stones.

To Mr Nightingale,

I have extremely efficient anti-abuse mail filters in place and I
notice from my logs that an attempted email from you has been
zapped. I am on every spamlist in the universe since the days when
I participated in a public slagging match on n.a.n-a.m with a
certain Sanford Wallace who took his revenge by adding everyone
who disagreed with him to all his lists. I've also been mailbombed
and other such pleasant stuff, so I need those filters. Anything
which does not qualify as "legitimate email" never gets off the
mail server and for some reason your email seems not to have been
deemed "legitimate email".

If there's something you wish to say to me in response to my
observations about your unfounded attack on another u.m.f.
regular, please do so in the same forum in which my comments were
made, i.e., here in public where we can all read them.

Well put. More people could aspire to this.

Dear Friends,
This Rik Palieri, writing to you to try and clear up this e-mail problem
before it goes on any longer.
When Tony Nightingale was trying to promote my coming to the UK he sent out
an attachment of my PR material. I don't think he really understood all the
reasons that one should not send out attachments to a group but perhaps by
being over enthusiastic he did so. You can imagine my horror when upon my
arrival the first post that I saw ,was not very flattering and to be honest
it
up set me greatly. I have been a regular poster on Folk DJ, ( in the USA)
for many years now and as we all do I have made my share of mistakes. Please
except our apologies and understand that Tony was just trying to
help out a friend and was
in no way was trying to cause any kind of problem with your list.

Thank you for your understanding.
RIK PALIERI
