I'm thinking of taking my Camper to Sidmouth but knowing the geography of
the area I'm a bit apprehensive of finding somewhere to put it. I'm not
buying a 'season' ticket preferring to wait till the last moment to see
what the weather is likely to be & buying tickets as I go. The web site
specifically states that the official field (for Campers) is only for the
season ticket holders, and maybe best avoided anyway. Can anyone give any
advice on the best alternatives ? Is there any chance on getting onto the
commercial sites at Salcombe etc. or will they be packed out ? Is there
any unofficial or wild camping available?

TIA

Many Sidmouth festival goers use local commercial campsites. If you
have wheels and can find somewhere to park in Sidmouth and
don't mind having to keep your alcohol intake down if you're
driving, you get the benefit of a civilised campsite. A friend of mine
recommended this place last year - as luck would have it I still have
his email with the details: (check for validity of prices/availability)

oakdown caravan park
weston
sidmouth devon
ex10 0ph
tel 01297 680387, fax 01395 513731
charges for a caravan/tent pitch during sidmouth festival week is pounds 10.30
per night - covers two adults & kids under 5. very freindly site, but not as
convenient as main site after lne!

The campsite at Seaton (which is very good and usually fully booked)
has several fields opposite. The farmer/owner of said fields gets a
camping licence, wheels in some portaloos and comes round to collect a
nominal
sum when/if he remembers. There's usually plenty of space, so its a
good
shout if you just want to see how things pan out...

Park up in the car park all week if you have to. Many do it every year and
never get troubled. Salcombe is full, I know, Ladram Bay (although not
that festive) always has places and taxis aren't that expensive back there
each evening. You can walk in the daytime either by road, cliff top or
along the beach (watch tide times).

Ensure you get there for this unforgetable experience though.

Talking of car parking in Sidmouth, I've been told that the Rugby Club
is a good place if you really need one. You pay about 15 quid for the
week, and for that you get a guaranteed space in a reasonably safe area
right in the middle of the town.

Personally, I wouldn't want to make the necessary sacrifices to remain
fit to drive legally, but I appreciate that others have different
priorities. Anyway, the walk from the campsite is good exercise: with
the amount of walking I did last year my wife is convinced that I had
lost weight when I returned home, despite a diet of beer and pasties.

And you can have a shower there while they cook you an excellent
breakfast! (or you could once, I've not tried for a couple of years).

Thanks very much everyone for the info.

This car park tho' , is it a special one for the festival, is it
pay/ticket? and where in Sidmouth is it & the Rugby club ( I've got a
street & OS map). It's just I don't want to be trailing the Camper around
Sidmouth for ages looking for a place to park up, I just want to dump the
van and get on with the serious stuff !

Try the Car Park opposite Connaught Gardens/Jacobs Ladder. It costs £1.50
for 24 hours (£10 for the week) and you won't be bothered there. Ignore
the notices stating "No overnight Sleeping". They're leniant for this
week.
