There's still a part of me which refuses to believe that any four digit year
starting with a 2 can possibly be a long time ago. But still. Twenty years
is a long time ago.
I remember surprisingly little of this, given that Zoe Ball was still the
Radio 1 breakfast DJ at the time so I was listening to it on the way to work
most days. Maybe that's just because there isn't a lot of memorable music
here. Late winter does tend to be a bit of a slow time for decent music, in
any era.
I've seen one artist in this chart play live. But more of that further down.
>1. (1) Gabrielle Rise
Not hugely memorable (obviously), but still a nice song.
>2. (NE) Sash! Adelante
Typical turn of the millennium dance track. But quite a good one.
>3. (NE) Fierce Sweet Love 2K
I don't remember this at all. Listening to it now doesn't ring even the
faintest of bells.
>4. (2) Britney Spears Born To Make You Happy
Bland. If songs were colours, this would be beige.
>5. (3) R.E.M. The Great Beyond
One of the few that I properly remember from the time, and really liked then
and now.
>6. (NE) The Tamperer Hammer To The Heart ft Maya
Unmemorable.
>7. (4) Andreas Johnson Glorious
Another that was one of my favourites at the time.
>8. (5) Donell Jones U Know What's Up
Followed by one that completely passed me by.
>9. (NE) Death In Vegas Aisha
Slightly odd.
>10. (9) DJ Luck And MC Neat A Little Bit Of Luck
I found this song incredibly irritating at the time. I have no reason to
revise that opinion.
>17. (11) Artful Dodger Re-Rewind The Crowd Say Bo Selecta ft Craig David
This is, possibly, even more irritating. But in a different way.
>20. (14) Len Steal My Sunshine
One of the few genuinely good songs in this chart.
>22. (21) Sting Desert Rose ft Cheb Mami
As is this. But, in my mind, I don't associate this song with February.
Later that year, it was used in an advert for Jaguar, which ran repeatedly
during the TV coverage of Euro 2000. So my memories of the song are based on
that, so for me it always feels like a summer song.
Apparently, the idea of using the song as an advert for Jaguar came from
Sting's people, who thought that Jaguar might be interested in a video which
already featured one of their cars. Jaguar agreed, and built the commercials
around the video. Unusually, no money changed hands for the rights to use
the song - instead, the car commercials were designed to also be an advert
for the song and album as well as the car. It worked, at least for Sting.
The album ended up selling over 4 million copies, which was about four times
as many as the record label had expected when they released it. I have no
idea how many cars it sold.

>28. (23) Westlife I Have A Dream/Seasons In The Sun
How to ruin two songs in one go.
>30. (32) William Orbit Barber's Adagio For Strings
Another one of the few great tracks in this chart. I bought the album off
the back of it, and was severely disappointed. But, still. This is classic
fin de millennium dance.
>42. (38) Macy Gray I Try
Good song.
>53. (55) Robbie Williams She's The One/It's Only Us
Did the A2 side ever get played? The A1 is a pretty good song.
>56. (57) Cliff Richard The Millennium Prayer
On the one hand (the musical hand), this is pretty dire. But, on the other
hand (the subversive hand), you do have to hand it to Cliff for successfully
gatecrashing the millennium number one slot with a combination of a tune
that's centuries old and lyrics that are nearly two millennia old.
As you may have guessed, Cliff is the one artist in this chart that I've
seen play live. But, oddly enough, I've also seen the composer of this song,
Paul Field, play live. Or, more accurately, the arranger and
(part)-lyricist, since the tune is an old one and most of the words are,
too. I was dispatched to review him at a festival appearance a few years
after this. I have to say that I was not impressed. As a songwriter he may
be up there with the stars (he's written for Elkie Brooks and Tammy Wynette,
among others, as well as Cliff), but as a performer he was decidedly
mediocre. Then again, though, that's not uncommon. I doubt if Guy Chambers
or Bernie Taupin are that good on stage either.
>62. (52) John Lennon Imagine {1999 reissue}
Dunno why this was released here. It's not really a great song, anyway. I
know that may be a controversial statement, but, there you go.
>70. (67) Melanie C Northern Star
While she may have been the one who could sing, this wasn't a particularly
good song.
>72. (68) Eiffel 65 Blue (Da Ba Dee)
Quirky.
>77. (66) Cuban Boys Cognoscenti Vs Intelligentsia
Based on the "hampster dance" (sic) web page, which was one of the original
Internet memes. The original page is preserved at the Internet Archive, but,
unfortunately, that doesn't include the audio track.
