609 "TOW Ross Got High"

This ensemble episode was such a joy!

After the last two I had been expecting a steady decline in the quality
of the show as Janine assumed an increasing importance in the storylines,
but instead her appearance lasted only 43 seconds. Even Gunther has had
bigger parts in the show!

It's Thanksgiving, and Monica has invited her parents, but first she must
warn Chandler that she's never admitted their relationship to them. Even
worse, the reason is that Jack & Judy hate him. This leads to a wonderful
joke as Chandler promises that his charm will win them over, as indeed he
won Monica, but she argues that he'd never get them *that* drunk!!!

Since Chandler is living with Monica, Ross is more like Joey's best bud,
and Janine invites them to a boozy uptown Thanksgiving party with all her
dancer friends, but Monica won't let them go until they've eaten. She is
showing enormous faith in Rachel by letting her prepare dessert, without
any back-up - presumably she remembers how much she was hurt by Judy who
once expected her cooking to "Pull A Monica".

Phoebe arrives looking gorgeous as usual, and notice that all three women
are dressed in red, while all the three guys are dressed in blue. But when
Monica's parents turn up, Chandler gets off on the wrong foot by assuming
that the dandruff on Jack's shoulder is snow - in November? Ah, I suppose
that could happen in America.

Meanwhile, Phoebe reveals to Rachel that she's been having erotic dreams
about Jack Geller. This could be the beginning of an extremely interesting
storyline where Phoebe gets her revenge for losing Richard Burke to Monica
by having an affair with her father. But sadly after a nap between courses
she informs Rachel that he cheated on her in the dream. This little story
resembled the time a dream made her mad at Ross, but it was worth it for
the sublime detail where Cousteau's pet seahorse was totally coming onto
her! Notice how at well at ease Rachel is with her now.

In a wonderful moment that proves Season Six can kick ass, Rachel proudly
tells Ross & Joey that she's preparing a traditional English trifle, with
multiple layers of sponge cake, jam, custard, raspberries, beef sauteed
with peas & onions, bananas, and whipped cream on top...

The guys are no less stunned than we in the audience, and discover that
some of the pages in the recipe book have been stuck together, so they
*immediately* blame Chandler. This piece of sexual innuendo has puzzled
younger more innocent fans, (especially teenage girls), so I'll just say
that Ross & Joey were making a rude joke at Chandler's expense.

What presumably happened was that the pages became accidentally glued
together with the ingredients of some previous meal, and poor Rachel has
incorporated part of a recipe for Shepherd's Pie. (In fact that should be
lamb, since the beef equivalent is Cottage Pie, but never mind.)

But before Ross & Joey can warn anyone, another crisis develops. Judy
lets slip that the reason they've always hated Chandler is that he smokes
pot, whereas it was really Ross who'd once pinned the blame on Chandler.

The scene when Ross confesses has caused much confusion, since Chandler
happens to misunderstand. Ross was not caught at college, but at home in
his bedroom during the Spring Break of his sophomore year.

When Chandler tells Monica that Ross was caught smoking pot in college,
he's got it wrong. But that's not surprising, for it does make the third
cruel thing that Ross has done to him as a student, after naming him "Sir
Limps-A-Lot" when he lost a toe, and telling everyone that Chandler was
gay in order to steal away his girlfriend.

While Joey warns everyone else about the trifle, Ross avoids confessing
to his parents by distracting Rachel in the hallway, but unable to think
of what to say, he ends up flirting with her as though she is the pizza
delivery girl. Nobody would never know that Rachel is his wife, (divorce
pending), and sadly she rebuffs his advances, once again dashing hopes of
the poor R&R fans.

Joey teaches the company how to act pleased with the trifle. His acting
lessons are always fun because although they seem daft they then come
true, and this was no exception as Monica pretends to enjoy the hideous
concoction. Phoebe very cleverly avoids eating the trifle on the grounds
that she's a vegetarian, and the others escape by taking their trifle
with them to (not) eat in private.

This just leaves Ross who bravely eats it to please Rachel, and Joey who
actually likes it - "What's to hate?" he asks! When she cross-examines
Chandler he makes excuses about a bird grabbing his trifle, which closely
resembles Rachel's excuses for no longer having the presents that people
bought her, but this time she didn't seem to notice...

Monica runs out of patience, so confesses to her parents on Ross's behalf,
which leads to a marvellous sequence of escalating tattle-tales as she &
her brother reveal childhood secrets to Jack & Judy, culminating with the
news that Ross has married & divorced Rachel. However, this does not mean
that the divorce has come through yet, since it's still too early.

Everyone feels the need to join in, including Rachel as she discovers her
mistake, but oh joy, at long last I actually *liked* Judy Geller as she
took pains to answer each person's confession kindly but honestly, and in
a heartwarming moment she thanked Chandler for being such a good friend
to Ross over the years - and now that he's taken on Monica as well, he is
a wonderful human being!!!

This was a brilliant piece of work by Gregory S.Malins who has written
some lovely episodes in the past, and his idea of the Gellers pitting
Chandler against Monica & Ross was very clever.

Indeed, the story was such that I'm prepared to bet that anyone who read
a spoiler in advance would not have enjoyed it quite so much. I seems to
me that there was a delicacy about this script that depended on you not
knowing anything in advance, as compared to some episodes where you can
chant the lines in advance & it all just adds to the fun.

The whole cast (the main six and two long-standing guest artists) pulled
together into a strong ensemble, Monica wasn't too weird, we had nice R&R
and C&J moments, and Phoebe was of course 'different'. But best of all
there was very little of Janine, which brings me to a curious conclusion.

Could it be that Janine's story was cut back, and the irrelevant Phoebe
story invented to fill the holes? If you watch the opening again, it is
clear that a punchline was being set up, where Ross & Joey finally escape
from the apartment, and arrive at the dance studio, only to discover that
Janine's dancer friends were all male...

No spoilers PLEASE from anyone who has already seen episodes 610-625.

When I saw this initially it had been just days after I started poring over
the years scripts, and the revelations sequence wasn't as funny as it was
when I read it. Having been given time to forget exactly what was said over
the last 8-9 months I found it much funnier this time. I do think though,
that in this case, knowing nothing would have made it even funnier.

But he does a nice 'old Ross' thing by eating the trifle, despite its
ingredients.

Phoebe was very attracted to Richard when they first met, she said he
looked like James Bond, and started giggling when they shook hands. But
then Monica moved in, and Phoebe could see she was smitten. Just because
I said that Pheebs would get her revenge doesn't mean that she has been
resenting Monica all these years, for she was Phoebe's best friend.

Yeah - the ruder the joke, the more casual they are about it.

Exactly, I liked old Ross. Mind you, even his passing the blame has been
seen in earlier seasons "you're mom's dog kept looking at me", but what I
don't like is his new Little Boy Lost expression...

Phoebe was awesome. =)

I just LOVE this scene!!! It's probably my very favorite scene in the whole history of
Friends, and I almost know it by heart! Mmm, let's see, shall we? =)

--
MONICA: Mom, Dad, Ross smoked pot in college.

('Mom' and 'Dad' gasp)

ROSS: (to Monica) You are such a tattletale! (to Jack & Judy) Mom, Dad, remember the
time you came in my room and smelled marijuana?

JACK&JUDY:(They turn to Chandler giving him icy glares) Yes!

ROSS: Well I told you it was Chandler who smoked the pot, but it was me. I'm sorry.

JUDY: It was you?

MONICA: And Dad, y'know that mailman that you got fired? Didn't steal your Playboys!
Ross did!

ROSS: Yeah, well, hurricane Gloria didn't break the porch swing, Monica did!!

MONICA: Ross hasn't worked at the museum for a year!!!

ROSS: Monica and Chandler are living together!!!!

MONICA: Ross married Rachel in Vegas, and got divorced!! Again!!!

PHOEBE: I love Jacques Cousteau!!

RACHEL: I wasn't supposed to put beef in the trifle...

JOEY: I want to gooo...!

JUDY: (rubbing her temples) That's a lot of information to get in about thirty seconds.
Alright, Joey, if you wanna leave, just leave. Rachel, no you weren't supposed to put
beef in the trifle. It did not taste good. Phoebe, I'm sorry, but I think Jacques
Cousteau is dead. Monica, why you had to hide the fact that you were in an important
relationship is beyond me...

JACK: And we kinda figured about the porch swing!

JUDY: Ross, drugs... divorced... again?

JACK: What happened, son?

ROSS: I got tricked into all those things!

JUDY: And Chandler, you've been Ross' best friend all these years, stuck by him duing
the drug problems, and now you've taken on Monica as well... Well, I don't know what to
say... You are a wonderful human being!

CHANDLER: (*shocked*) Wow, thank you.

JACK: *No*! Thank *you*! (hugs Chandler) Monica, and Ross, I don't know what I'm gonna
do about the two of you!

CHANDLER: I'll talk to them...

Trust me, a lot of teenage fans, including, and probably especially,

Yes, it would be nice to more of him. Perhaps un petit scene at home
with Jasmine & the Sphinx.

Oh yes, Mr.Perry portrayed this scene quite superbly, but as ever his
love for Monica was all.

Phoebe switched it, but her nouveau definition was not accepted.

In any case, by the end of 403 "TOW the 'Cuffs" (one of my favourite
episodes) Judy promised Monica that the next time she catered for her,
there would be nothing but ice in her freezer, and in the episode under
discussion Monica paid Rachel the same respect, thus proving that she
is so not the neurotic obsessive that some claim.

Matthew Perry is so on-form in this episode, proving that his character can
be very funny without the "quips" he was saddled with in the early years.

This is so, but notice I said "as though she is the pizza delivery girl".

RACHEL: Ross gets really nervous when he's flirting.

Well, *actually* he says "What's not to like?", but your version was

All I wanna say is.. I guess that *every* guy & girl in my year at

Not wanting to push the issue...but in my school more of us "innocent"
teenage girls got the joke than the lads...

I think the times they are a-changing...the pages together joke is something
we've laughed at since the start of Year 7 [our dirty minds were born with
the shock of starting secondary school :):):) ]

Ok, but that's waaay OT. And please forget it as soon as you've read it, 'k?

Ok, here goes, it was about a year ago. I dreamed, sorry, dreamT, that George Clooney
was visiting 'my hometown' (why, I don't know!). Well, more like a cross between my
hometown and Paris, actually. My school and my house were there but that's about it. I'm
his tour guide, and as we're visiting the Louvre, Celine shows up, looking at me with
disdain and says she & George have to talk (the bitch! LOL). So, they talk, and part,
and then a lot of stuff I can't exactly remember happens. On his last day 'here' we're
walking along the Seine as the dusk falls, and he sets a boat on which tens of teens are
partying on fire (told you it was a weird dream!) and shoves it in the middle of the
river (how strong! LOL). Then he looks up and says he doesn't know what came over him
and he would *never* do that (Thank God!) and tells me to call for help (He's only taken
4 years of French in high school, sooo...). I rush to a phone box and call the firemen.
When I get back, (...gettin' weirder...) he's turned into Will Smith! LOL. Then,
*somehow*, I'm in this coach filled with prissy old twits (sound familiar? =)). Seems
like *we*'re the 'help' *I* called! (Whaddya want, anything's possible in my
dreamworld!) And there's traffic, so I'm worried we won't make it in time, *and* upset
that George turned into Will. Anyway, we take a shortcut and when we arrive, it turns
out firemen were already there and the kids are safe. But despite being late, George has
waited for me cause he wanted to thank me (awww!). He says I'm a great friend and he'll
never forget me (awww! again), and hugs me (Awwwwwwww... Ohhh, I can still see it =)) .
. .

"Adeline? Adeline?!"

Yeah, but still, I can tell, he was not flirting. Plus, Ross has always been straight
with Rachel, he was merely trying to keep her away from Joey's little briefing here.
IMO.

Well yes, but there a quite a few instances of Monica being unlike Monica,
and then you notice that many of her obsessions are what her friends say she
has, not the lady herself (like Janice's prematurely ex-husband).

The Sir Limpsalot incident when they had been at college together for at
least a year, by which time all the pretty girls would know that Chandler
was not gay, by how he reacted to them.

Yeah but you've lived longer. =)
I also dreamt an ep of "The Tiny Toons" when I was, like, 6; and one of "Felicity"
around a year ago too. I don't remember them very well though.

Ross's birthday in TOW Five Steaks and an Eggplant? He did say something about
eating dust bunnies, though, didn't he?

Yeah. I thought his reaction to the title story in 611 was unworthy of the 321 and

Gosh! Do you ever dream of entire new episodes of "Friends"?

Even Joey wouldn't eat a dust bunny!

But I'm thinking of his *favourite* food... :)

Ross was trying to keep Rachel away from Joey's little briefing.

Hmmm. I'll comment on that later on today, in my new review.

Actually, he said "I guess I'm gonna stay home and eat dust bunnies"

OHMYGOD, when did he refuse to eat Pizza?? LOL
If you're talking about meat, he offered Phoebe to stop eating any during her
pregnancy to "even her number of cows."
Oop, and he refused to eat at the beginning of TOA Vegas. "I'll probably eat in

Because she was doing increasingly freaky things she normally keeps under

Actually yes. I like them to be even on each side of my mouth. If there's an
odd number in the packet, I give one away, or just chuck it in the bin!

Good point, and although I have a very visual memory, the fanfic plots
arrive as pure ideas, so another part of my mind invented them.

520 - offers Chandler first bite of his favourite sandwich
601 - delays breakfast as depressed his movie was cancelled

For all the Dutch fans who saw this episode on Sunday...

The guys are no less stunned than we in the audience, and discover that
some of the pages in the recipe book have been stuck together, so they
*immediately* blame Chandler, making a rude joke at his expense.

Limps-A-Lot" when he lost a toe, and telling everyone that Chandler was
gay in order to steal away a girl he liked.

While Joey warns everyone else about the trifle, Ross avoids confessing
to his parents by distracting Rachel in the hallway, but unable to think
of what to say, he ends up 'flirting' with her as though she is the pizza
delivery girl.

This just leaves Ross who bravely eats it to please Rachel, and Joey who
gobbles it up - "What's to not to like?" he asks!
