BSkyB to launch Freeview rival on satellite

UK satellite broadcaster BSkyB is launching a package of 200 free channels
to counter the threat from Freeview, the digital terrestrial platform that
has been a run away success since it replaced ITV Digital in 2002.

It's a bit late Simon! - the earlier thread already has 81 posts!.

Anyway, it's hardly anything new, it's simply the 'free' BBC box deal
they did before - except instead of charging £120 'installation', they
are now no longer claiming the box is free - and charging £150 for
everything.

Didn't know there were so many shopping and god channels
to act as fillers.

Good, good, spam europa, one group down, three to go. Now try reading the
previous posts before posting duplicates: already lots of messages about
this, so why not add something *new* instead of just pimping your URL?

But of course you still need a $ky box.

No doubt it will be just as crippled (if not more so) than typical $ky
receivers.

Oh yes and apparently the card runs out after two years...

As far as I can see it is just another attempt to tie people to proprietary
$ky equipment incompatible with what the rest of Europe uses.

Owners of real FTA receivers (like me) will not be able to view the "free"
$ky channels because they will not issue a CAM for their encryption method.

Why would it be any different to any other digibox?

>Oh yes and apparently the card runs out after two years...

No, the card is guaranteed to last AT LEAST two years. Considering
that the first card issue lasted for five years, there's little reason
to believe that the second will run out anything like as quickly.

Owners of real FTA receivers (like you, and me) will be able to view
all the free to air channels just like before. If ITV, C4 and C5 need
to encrypt to keep their broadcasts within the UK (unlike the BBC who
can just burn the licence fee money behind closed doors) then that's
their decision. If those channels worry you so much, get a Freeview
box for them, and enjoy the rest of the high quality FTA satellite
lineup with your FTA satellite box.
