Wimbledon's owners have signed an agreement with a property development
consortium to move the club 50 miles outside London to Milton Keynes.
After many attempts to move the club in the last 10 years, this time it is
likely to happen. Wimbledon expect to be playing in a new, 28,000-capacity
stadium in Milton Keynes by the end of 2003.
They will not change their name but the move is certain to be vehemently
opposed by supporters and is unprecedented in modern English football.
Soccernet reported talks to move to Milton Keynes were at an advanced stage
seven months ago. At the time, chairman Charles Koppel enlisted the help of
extra security guards to ensure his safety at home games at Selhurst Park.
This time the obstacles that he faces include obtaining full planning
permission and authorisation from the football authorities.
The Football League have a policy of not allowing clubs to move away from
their traditional home area but Wimbledon believe they are a special case.
They will argue that they moved away from the London borough of Merton 10
years ago when they quit Plough Lane to become tenants of Crystal Palace at
Selhurst Park.
They have also explored the option of merging with financially-stricken
Queens Park Rangers to stay in London but that idea, also first revealed by
this website, was blocked by the strident opposition of supporters of both
clubs.
Now, claims Koppel, the only option is to become the first professional
football club to relocate to a completely different area.
Koppel said today: 'We have to draw a line under all the speculation and
uncertainty. If we choose not to find a new home for the club in the medium
term it could die.
'We have reached an agreement to move to a new home in Milton Keynes. This
is about ensuring the survival of the club. As chairman I have always said
that we will look at all the options available and this is by far the best.'
The new stadium will be part of a hotel, office and conference centre
complex which has already been written into Milton Keynes's planning
strategy.
It will cost up to £50 million to build and is expected to be financed
through private investment, with Wimbledon and a Milton Keynes consortium
retaining ownership.
The football club would own around three-quarters of the new business and
Koppel believes the support base available from a town with a population of
210,000 and no rival team within it would propel Wimbledon into the big
time.
Koppel said he would involve supporters at every stage.
He promised to set up a liaison committee with supporters' organisations and
also pledged to maintain Wimbledon's training ground in Merton and the youth
and community work they do within the borough.
He admitted: 'We understand this is an emotional issue for our loyal
supporters and many will be disappointed.'
Previous owner Sam Hammam explored the possibility of moving Wimbledon to
Dublin and to Cardiff.

They can't be serious about this! I mean if they move 50 miles
away they won't need a 28000 stadium that's for sure, 28 maybe.

That's daft - they built a new centre court just last year, didn't
they?
I suppose Milton Keynes will have plenty of space for the outer courts
now, anyway.
