I needed you yesterday, when I was stuck in the middle of Southend at

Hope you enjoyed your little spell.

The timing on that's gone really bad, what with me moving house, and
Bob (Page's manager) wanting to go on holiday then as well as all new
staff at the bar.

We've shelved the idea, but if you still fancy going with it, feel

We'll be singing
When we're winning
We'll be singing

I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down

Pissing the night away
Pissing the night away

He drinks a whisky drink
He drinks a vodka drink
He drinks a lager drink
He drinks a cider drink
He sings the songs that remind him
Of the good times
He sings the songs that remind him
Of the better times:

"Oh Danny Boy
Danny Boy
Danny Boy..."

I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down

Pissing the night away
Pissing the night away

He drinks a whisky drink
He drinks a vodka drink
He drinks a lager drink
He drinks a cider drink
He sings the songs that remind him
Of the good times
He sings the songs that remind him
Of the better times:

"Don't cry for me
Next door neighbour..."

I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down

We'll be singing
When we're winning
We'll be singing

Guys, can we just keep this buried now? Preferably indefinitely? I
would very much like for this usenet fart to pass out the window. I
may not have been involved (for the record I'm pulling a complete
Switzerland on the matter), but I (and I can't imagine I'm alone in
this matter) certainly got the whiff. :-)

so no explanation/apology whatsoever, Paul can be as insulting as he wants
and we should just ignore it because its him and pretend its ok for him to
totally over-react to a post and make personally offensive comments about
another poster.

If you want to ignore that thats up to you, I always thought that people on
this group behaved in a friendly fashion, as much as is possible for a
newsgroup anyway, but it has already been pointed out to me that this is
wrong and I shouldnt assume a basic level of friendliness, or think that
just because in the past when someone overstepped the bounds they were held
accountable by the rest of the group that this would happen no matter who
went too far.

Right, that's it! My two bits worth!
They were both at fault, it was an argument, they argued, they all
killfiltered each other, now they don't talk to each other.
People say bad things in arguments, that's how it is, that's why it's
an argument.
Why should he now have to apologise for or explain what he said, if he
doesn't want to he shouldn't have to

No amount of dragging it up is going to make it go away, it's
happened and there are repercussions.
Forgetting about it from now on will not make it go away but it
will allow the rest of the group to ignore the obvious differences that
are going on with certain members of the group. If you or
any other posters on the group are really that pissed off about Paul's
part of it then ignore his posts or killfile him yourself.

Most of the group want this to go away. I for one am still talking to Paul,
that doesn't make me a bad person cos if James was here I'd probably
talk to him as well as the whole thing does not involve me.

It seems to me you've taken a side and know who you agree with, to be
honest I think I have too but if I give me opinions on that here then I
become part of it don't I!?!

This is all I will say on the matter, not that I'm some sort of argument
police or anything like that, I'm a member of this group that's quite
worried by what he sees. At the moment UMTSS is not a place I
recognise and the sooner it returns to what it's been to me for the last
4 years or so then we'll all be better off!!

I'm not pissed off at Paul, I'm annoyed at the double standards.
When James posted this in reply to Mike

<Could you for once just have an opinion of your own and stick to it?
The trick is to learn all the facts possible and then decide rather than
second guess what the majority opinion will be.
If you're going to retract everything with "you have a point there" or "i'm

6 regulars felt the need to post a rebuke/comment, yourself included,
ranging from "a little harsh" to me-fucking-ow" with other regulars posting
in support etc etc.

yet when Paul posts

<So take your petulant inappropriate teenage rant and shove it up your
over-used arse.>

and

<Thanks for the efforts Syn - appreciate it - but I have just about had
enough of being told what to think by someone who shows no inclination
whatsoever towards original thought and seems destined to sponge off
the state for the remainder of his short and no doubt miserable life.>

the only people to say anything are me, Zoidy, 1 semi-lurker and 1 lurker. I
get told to stay out of it, the lurkers get ignored/jumped on and Zoidy
didnt really get any response

I take the side as I see it, if it had been the other way around I would
have had words with James about it, but nothing James posted was in any way
a petulant teenage rant imo

which is sort of my point. The UMTSS I remember would have stepped in when
it went too far and it would have been finished with, now its all about
keeping out of it and having opinions but not posting them if it is certain
members of the group that do it, which is not what I remember this group
being like at all,

I saw it as an argument. Person A says something, person B doesn't
like it, person A says something else, person B has a go.

At the time I disagreed with what James said, I've spoken to Mike a
lot and he has opinions about a lot of things, James posted a blatant
attack on what he saw as a personality flaw in Mike, it was completely
unprovoked.
Paul replied (albeit strongly) to James essentially telling him not to
have a go a spammer.

James has been guilty of pressing home his opinions in the past, I
remember him blatantly killfiling Syn a while back over some petty
comment, he tried for weeks to get James to talk to him but just
got ignored in a very childish way.
The numurous "Bored now" posts and emails that Christian has
received don't really help his cause either, I found out today that
the UMTSS website is down, click on it yourself.

His attack on Mike that you've reminded us all of is a case in point
while you're talking of double standards, I'm interested to know,
did James apologise to Mike at the time for his unprovoked attack?

As far as I'm concerned, if I was here I would have stepped in, what
good it would have done though, I don't know.

The website is currently having it's navigation system changed & I've been
having problems - which is why it's down.

Other sections, which aren't affected by these changes - such as the

I explained my actions at the time to my on satisfaction and no further
questions were asked.

I don't feel I was out of order either in

a) what I said - I still think it today,
b) how I said it - people said it should have been done privately, although
fail to realise it had been done privately many times over they just hadn't
seen it.

The further 'unprovoked' attack in uk.media.tv.smallville was not
unprovoked.
In fact you had been throwing my name around on the group in order to curry
favour and friendship from other posters claiming that you were my friend -
when in fact you had 'set filters' on me.

I explained myself both here, umts, on msn and in real life at Battle Bar 6
which was close to events and many people agreed with me, including,
interestingly, an intoxicated Paul Harper.

this was 3 posts long, not my idea of an on-going argument. Pauls original
reply to the ad, James' response to that, Pauls response to James.

The attack on James was then continued by Paul in response to a post by Syn.

depends on your definition of spam I suppose, a short message and an email
addy about old magazines that could well be of interest to members of a star
trek group doesnt constitute spam imo, plus it was within the bounds of the
faq, just not headed correctly, which wasnt mentioned in Pauls original reply
at all, he only attacked the content of the post, probably because SFX was
mentioned

well, I tried to step in and it did no good, maybe if more people had it
might have.

I would like to say at this point that I have no problem with Paul as such,
and this is not a personal thing against him because he attacked "my mate".
If what James had posted warrented a response like he got I wouldnt have
said a thing, but it didnt. I did what other regs have done in a similar
situation and tried to say that what Paul posted was too much, only to be
left pretty much high and dry with comments appearing later about having
opinions but not posting etc.

At least after the James/Mike thing everything was sorted, James went too
far by group decision, they both pretty much decided to ignore each other on
UMTSS, everything was resolved, even if it wasnt back to Mike and James
being friends at least it was resolved, and the group went back to pretty
much normal. This doesnt feel resolved, it feels ignored. I'm not asking
that Paul is treated like a pariah, I'm not championing James or applying
for him to be made a saint, I'm saying that Paul's attack was unjustified,
and that the response by the rest of the group was to brush it off, keep
quiet or tell James to back off whilst ignoring the comments made by Paul,
which just struck me as wrong.

I'm not going to continue with this anymore because the "group" seems happy
to behave in this manner, I just felt it was worth commenting on how much
the group has changed over the past few months, and not for the better imo

I don't mean to ignore anything. But you're gravely mistaken if you think
the burden of guilt can be pinned on James any less than it can be on Paul.
There's plenty to go around. I imagine neither is going to be apologizing
anytime soon, so we have to make a conscious decision, go on or move on. I
vote for the latter.

What purpose does a (selective) list of URLs serve? I don't want to hear
"He started it!", "But he called me a <beeeep>!" and "He stole my
crayons!". That's not a productive area of discussion.**

There was an opportunity for at least two civilized arguments: The
interpretation of the FAQ and UMTSS censorship. There simply wasn't put
enough effort into steering the conversation to within the realm of reason
by a small number of participants (that's right, not merely Paul or James).
The result: friendships destroyed, a segmented UMTSS, disillusioned
regulars and scared/disgusted lurkers.

Everybody has flaws (I certainly do) or says things that somebody else may
not appreciate too much. When one is confronted by such an occassion he/she
will get the best results by letting that be known in a respectful manner.
Whatever James or Paul may or may not think, that's not what happened. Just
because the other goes Jerry Springer on you doesn't mean you should too. I
haven't spoken up because I've been hoping both of them would find it in
their hearts to take a more self-critical look. I still am.

This has turned out a lot more preachy then I intended, but I don't know
how else to put this into words. I'm of course well aware I'm no saint
either...

This is my last post to UMTSS on this subject. That doesn't mean I wouldn't
welcome a rebuttal from you (not excluding anybody else for that matter).
But I intend to reply through email.

Right, my one and only comment on this subject too. Sorry to
piggyback, Joost, but I'm not digging back to find a more
appropriate point to respond.

From Paul:
"It's all on Google, but really *not* worth reading tbh - a low
point
for *several* people on here, myself included "

James went OTT at Paul. Paul was offensive to James. We all know
it but there was personal animosity in both directions. I'd also
had a little dig at the spammer, at about the same intensity as
Paul, but was ignored. (Which is fine, btw - I was playing with a
spammer, not trying to upset James.)

So Paul posts a very quiet "I'm not proud, can this all go away?"
statement. And James brings up the whole sordid mess again. Then
Spar jumps on Joost for also wishing it would all go away?

Wish my second languages approached this fluency level,
unfortunately the only one I can speak this well is Total Bollocks
and it's not much use except in a crowded pub late at night.

Indeed. Count the names and message patterns of the posters. It's
changed a *lot*.

"A low point for *several* people on here, myself included " -
Paul H. Not an apology, but an acknowledgement, which is stage one
on moving forward.

That's it. I'm out of this subject.

You had me believing you on the second-language bit. Then you kept posting,

Such is the way of unmoderated newsgroups, everyone can be a complete twat
if they want to. The question is, what can a further post achieve in the
way of greater harmony for the group?

When someone steps a little out of line, it can be helpful for the group to
prod them with a sharp stick and get them back on the straight and narrow,
but when people go as far as was the case in this instance, there is very
little that can be done, but wait for tempers to cool, and hope that people
will come to their senses (which, in the past, they appear to have done).
As it is, rehashing it (irregardless[1] of the rights or wrongs of it) will
produce much more heat than light, which laves a bitter taste in the mouth.
Or did I mix too many metaphors in there?

Perhaps for the purpose of avoiding doubt, a note to that affect could be
made on the temporary main page?

There was a note. Down until further notice queries to me, nobody queried it
until now.

Snip stuff before

It seems to me that we have pretty much the same sort of resolution here,
James and Paul are never going to be friends, that much is obvious, I feel
certain things about this place have been lost forever, I'm sorry but that's
how I feel.
I'm not happy about this whole episode one bit so you see your comment
about the group being happy doesn't apply to me, I'm just of the opinion
that no amount of moaning and bringing it back up is going to resolve it
because you see the people involved will not be bullied into "making
friends"
