Aaron - seriously tempted
Gamecube looks like it'll be a lot closer to my price range....
Maj
No-one in the world. Just like the PS2 it'll be a year before a decent
amount of good games are out for it. Except the PS2 has had a year's head
start.
Alex
So even though it's supposedly 3 times faster than the PS2, all the programs
are dusted with the Bill Gate's special magic i.e. much crapness
AndyB
And it's probably a billion times faster than a Game Boy Advance, but we all
know which has the better games.
Alex
I dunno... so did Dreamcast and that wasn't too bad at all...
Maj - Soul Calibur addict :)
You are getting a hell of a lot more for your money at the same time
last year :o)
Aaron
Or you could just pay £100 less and get a machine with better games ? :-)

No-one is questioning the XBox's technical superiority, but like the PS2
last year, the initial release catalogue is made up of games rushed so that
there would be a decent list of titles out for it when it launched. Apart
from SSX Tricky and Max Payne, this list isn't exactly awe-inspiring - and
both of those will be out for the PS2 in Europe before Christmas, SSX Tricky
is out on Friday. A lot of gamers will tell you that the console with the
best games out for it right now is the Gameboy Advance of all things - there
isn't a game on any of the big three consoles that matches Mario Kart's
gameplay.
The one thing that sums up the difference right now for me is the two
machine's WWF games. The XBox has WWF Raw, which looks prettier than the
PS2's Smackdown: Just Bring It, but it doesn't have anything close to the
gameplay, from what I've heard. JBI has 72 (count 'em) different types of
match you can play!
The XBox isn't a bad machine, and I'm sure that in a year or so's time when
the list of games is a bit longer and people have had more time to get the
best out of the machine, that things will change, but right now the PS2 has
the best line up of games for it - SSX Tricky, Gran Tourismo 3, Grand Theft
Auto 3, Max Payne, Final Fantasy X, Pro Evolution Soccer (AKA Winning Eleven
V), Tekken 4 (the exact same game as the arcade machine which is just a PS2
with the DVD-ROM drive taken out and replaced with a set of ROM chips so it
loads faster) etc etc etc.
The controllers on the XBox are also horrible, so I've been told. The PS2's
are exactly the same as the old PSOne Dual Shock Analogue ones, so they're
not wonderful but okay. The Gamecube has the best controllers ever, and can
use a GBA as an extra one too.
The PS2's problem is sequel-itis. A lot of the games above are sequels, or
PC ports - though PS2 Half Life is a thing of beauty.
The XBox has a big advantage in that Microsoft bought a blanket licence for
the Unreal engine, ported it and have now made it available to developers as
an off-the-shelf engine, so third parties can worry about the game and not
the engine.

I have not seen anything for the PS2 that has inspired me to buy one,
except possibly GTA3. Even the prospect of getting the machine for
Ł180; I'll get the X-Box for Ł270. :o)

From a technical point yes. Other platforms will spank the PS2's ass
on playability.

Clever; use cheap hardware to make an arcade machine and still sell it
to arcades for ŁXX,XXX :o)

They are *very* similar to the Dreamcast controllers, with the
addition of a few buttons and an extra analogue stick. look to be just
slightly smaller (so I've heard). Also have a nice glowey green cable
:o) The X-box itself is goddamned ugly though - even more than the
PS2.

Not seen Half Life, but I did read that they re-consrtucted everything
from the ground up.

Fred Derse (sp?) is a hidden character. I think that tells you which one is
best.

GTA3 is the loveliest thing in lovely-ville apparently, but it's not my sort
of game so I gave it a miss.

Plus the ultra-fun Create-A-Superstar option.

Hmmmmmm, why ? Playability has nothing to do with technical capability. The
PS2 is the weakest of the three in that respect, yet it still manages games
like SSX Tricky.

It works for the developers, they only have to develop one version of the
game and then change it slightly so it has the necessary "Insert Coins"
stuff.

Thankfully, most games don't make use of the right side analogue controller
on the PS2.

Mostly, yes, the maps are the same generally, just improved a bit. The only
thing that hasn't been changed are the voice samples which are a bit
low-quality compared to most PS2 games.

I quite like it. :-)
Alex
Fred Durst. When the game starts it says that Fred Durst appears courtesy of
whichever record company he works for, along with a credit for "Rollin' (Air
Raid Vehicle)" which is used for the Undertaker's entrance music. The
Undertaker and Triple H have their proper entrance music (unlike in
Smackdown 2). For some reason, Albert doesn't have the Uncle Kracker music
though (and X-Pac isn't even in the game for some unknown reason). Stone
Cold has some bizarre version of his music, but (again reason unknown) if
you go to Create-A-Superstar and select which music you want to use, his
Disturbed theme is in the game.
The game has a "Reward Cards" system where you unlock features as you
progress. This unlocks new match types (I have unlocked Street Fight,
Ultimate Submission and Last Man Standing matches so far), wrestlers (Rhyno
and Tajiri so far, but Shane and Stephanie are locked, and I think Mick
Foley and Jerry Lynn are available too - unlocking Tajiri is funny, he's in
Commissioner Regal's office when you go to see him and if you turn down a
shot at the European title he makes you fight Tajiri instead, so Tajiri gets
all excited and starts babbling in Japanese) as well as move sets, and extra
clothing types for your created superstars, entrances, entrance music and
videos etc.
The move sets are cunningly named, I created a wrestler and made him use
move set NCBT (No Company - Booker T). When I looked at the moves this set
contained, my wrestler's taunt move was the Spinaroonie! All of the move
sets are based on wrestlers they didn't have the time or the rights to put
in the game. Another set, for example, was a perfect recreation of DDP.
Other move sets had names like WXP (WWF X-Pac), WVV (WWF Val Venis), WGF
(WWF Goodfather), CRF (WCW Rick Flair), CKN (WCW Kevin Nash) etc etc.

Durst, aka the Anti-christ or "that sellout-t--t who I never really liked
anyway"
James
The sellout?

It's generally accepted that LB's music declined from their first album to
their third which was pretty much commericial pap albeit fun at 2am whilst
drunk to do Rollin' with all the actions.
James
There is nothing wrong with commercial pap. It is just a shame that it is
the most I can normally get my friends to listen to. Commercial house,
commercial garage, pop, commercial rock. That is the most hard core they
will go. I even had trouble convincing one of them to go to a Delerious!
concert once because they said that the music was not commercial enough for
them. It limits my nights out to cheese, soft dance and maybe the odd bit of
garage if I am lucky. Good think I live in Essex where those things can be
found every night just a 2 hour [1] walk from my house. The end result is
that I can only listen to a full range of stuff when I am on my own in my
room (with everyone else out so I can make full use of my parents' sound
system, or when I am in my car (which no longer exists).
Baggers
[1] I' ve made the 10 mile walk back on several occations. I am normally
slightly drunk at the time I start most of them
