It means "quickly" (more like "yesterday" really:-) but isn't an
abbreviation - I believe it's American medical slang but can't find the
posting where the question was first answered.

Abbreviation of the latin for immediately (statim, I think), used
by medical types to mean "now!"
I dunno. Three months of lurking followed by two posts in one day,
somehow I suspect I'm not finding my work as interesting as I should!

Re: STAT, I'd figured out from the context what it meant (first heard the
term in Short Circuit - somebody asks what it means with no answer), but
had always wondered where the hell it came from.

I just watched ID4 last night and noticed the use of the word STAT, as in
"get a med. team in here STAT"
Franklin uses the same word very frequently in B5, and it's really been
bugging me.
What the hell does it mean?
I'm usually pretty good at these abbreviations, I got MTFBWY, IIRC, ROFL,
etc. pretty quickly, and of course YKWYHBWTMB5.
Can anyone help me?

it's part of the otiose public school habit of deploying Latin tags
(like infra dig, short for infra dignitatem, meaning beneath one's
dignity) which gets picked up by all manner of wannabes. It's most often
used in management to broaden the divide between the managers and the
managed. I've even heard a company director use "Tuesday ultima" and
"Tuesday proxima" rather than Tuesday last and Tuesday next. You would
be stunned at the amount of Latin that you know if you were to consider
everyday language e.g. N.B.
