AutoSpoo posting report since 1995/11/30

With the exception of the honorary 0, the umtsb5 numbers indicate
the number in sequence of the first appearance in the newsgroup.

(Oh, and Mr Gillyon, how come I was picking up postings dated '96
at 20:48 this evening? Not going to make some spurious claim about
the first of the year, are you...? <g>)

Someone mentioned this before, and I blamed Demon. My PC says the
right time, Windoze 95 says the right time...

But after reading this, I checked Agent. Agent thinks I'm GMT-8.00,
Pacific Time or Tijuana.

I wish. Well, I don't know where Tijuana is (Mexico?) but it's
probably warmer than Whitley Bay right now, and I bet the beer's
cheaper.

Oh well, problem solved.

"Crap" is subjective. Not everyone thinks so. I'm sorry that you feel
moved to comment so strongly, so immediately.

This list that I now compile and distribute weekly is a follow-on from a
tradition that started just a couple of weeks after the umtsb5 group was
instated, initially by our own lovely Jeanette (at the very head of the list).
Whilst I value the opinions of anyone who cares to state them, it should be
noted that yours is (to my knowledge) the only dissention ever seen as regards
the Who Spoo list. Should there be a majority decision that the list is no
longer required (or that I simply reduce the posting frequency) I shall be
most happy to oblige. Should you wish to ensure that you never download
another Autospoo and have a kill-file facility, I suggest that you include
"autospoo". That posting identity is only ever used for the list.

As for the time taken compiling it - no time at all these days. It's
automatically updated every time news unpacks here, and program-generated
whenever I need an up-to-date copy (hence "Autospoo" - auto-generated Who
Spoo). In the days when I was writing the programs involved it was a
matter of diverting myself for a few hours with an interesting problem.

IMHO a valuable service. But you could move me a little closer to the

As valuable as the other auto-postings, anyway... :)

Jeannette was given pride of place by me because .... well she is Jeannette.
There was only ever one dissention to my Who's Spoo list by someone adverse to
a big brother type inventory. All in all the list (either manually or automatically
generated) is a good source of readily available addresses etc. It also helps
evoke a communual feeling that umtsb5 has always been rich in. I suggest, Mr.
Man, that you follow Raj's advice. Failing that shut up.

Funny how this person didn't complain about the US FAQ, which is
nearly 3 times the size of this and almost completely useless.

A serious case of "lighten up, man" needed here. This list of
contributors has been around in many manifestations since the
group began, and it has performed a valuable service to many
people (including me) who need to look up other group members
quickly.

I suspect you are in a very small minority if you are serious
in wanting it discontinued. Perhaps a little longer lurking
might enable you to pick up the tone and manners that most people
on this group use. You would almost certainly benefit from their
use.

Regards,

Paul.

OTOH, I rather like the idea of assigning numbers to fans of a series whose

Yes, I thought that myself (as a person not unknown for letting it
be known when a posting has pissed me off !).

I'm not particularly interested in the autospoo, but I have no
objection to its existance & certainly wouldn't complain about
it *so* venomously if I did - 16K hardly takes a while to get,
even at 2400 bps !

Happy New Year to everyone!

Sorry about this slightly delayed reply to this.

Not quite right. That last line should read:

the number in sequence of the first appearance in the newsgroup since
the automated "Who Spoo" was started.

I used to be about ninth or tenth in the original Who's Spoo
(IE. the one set up when the newsgroup was started) but in this
one I'm 505th.

Not that I'm complaining or anything. Of course not. Not me :)

Same here. I agree with Simes.

At least only those that have posted recently go on the Who Spoo
list. It's not like the whole list of posters (all 1360+ of em')
was included.

Steve.

You may not believe it, but I hadn't even thought about that. It started
even before I took over compiling the list. I was 16th, so in addition to
my IRC handles and my e-mail address, I took to the habit of putting
"untsb5/16" on any id badges at meets/conventions etc. as a question-
getter to improve interest in the newsgroup. It just sort of carried on
from there...

Oh right. I stand corrected.

Strange - ever since the beginning of the *automated* Who's Spoo
I've been placed at 505. I've never known about notifying you
of new posting ids. Sorry.

Thanks a lot Raj.

To be honest, I wasn't that bothered about what number I was -
as long as I was in the Who's Spoo. :)

Well you are back to where you were, now... 13th. Me? I'm not superstitous.

No. That line reads correctly, but it assumes that people have done what
I asked, and notified me when their posting identity changes, or they use
multiple accounts. I then alias the new posting ids to point at the original
or update the base file as appropriate.

That's easy enough to arrange. It'll throw all the recent numbers out of
sync now though.

That's re-assuring.
