I should note that I have *always* been polite, used standard netiquette and
have generally tried my best to contribute only good, valid input to the
threads. Curious indeed.

Try doing a google on Jay Denebeim. He is the ... being....who kicked off
and runs the mod group, mostly. Not at all a nice individual - he's blocked
posters and done other things at jms' prompting. And yes, in my view, it's
very very cliquey indeed. They also brook not even the slightest suggestion
of a critique. OMMV!

The moderated news group has a complex registration process. You need
to use a valid email address otherwise the computer cannot send you a
form. Also check to make sure that your spam filter does not eat the
reply.

The problem was your spamtrapped email address. You have to use a valid email
address because after your first post you'll get an email that you have to
respond to that states that you'll abide by the rules. If you didn't get that
email and respond, you'll never be approved.
Many people have disposable emails to use for posting but I've never gotten any
spam traceable to my usenet postings.
Anybody who wants to be can be on a first name basis with JMS. He prefers that.
Yes, a number of us have been there for a long time but we welcome new people
all the time.

I try never to get involved in my own life. Too much trouble.
I use this email address only when posting to Usenet, and I get spam sent
to it on an almost daily basis. So the spammers are obviously harvesting
*some* newsgroups for addresses.

I only use this email address for Usenet, too. It has no other purpose at
all. I check it every couple of days via BT's web mail. I get around 200+
spam emails per day.
Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it greatly. Although I should add, all
previous attempts at using a non-munged email address for Usenet has left
more with tons of SPAM. I guess I'll just open another email account....one
that I don't really care too much for, and use it just for Usenet and
catching SPAM.
A couple of days ago I did in fact email a group mod, asking could I be
added to the list of the 'allowed'...however, I got no reply. Had someone
told me what you have been kind enough to tell me, I'd be up and running by
now. I suppose they never read their mail yet.
I shall take your advice. Thanks again. :)
So is a googlemail or hotmail email account OK? Or when you say valid....you
don't mean my actual ISP account, do you? I'd rather not use my Virginmedia
account on Usenet.....I'll be deluged with SPAM. I currently get no SPAM at
all, by being very careful, and I'm pretty proud of the fact. So,
hotmail...googlemail etc, they OK?
Thanks.
Now I guess I'll just sit back and wait to see if I was being paranoid after
all. I've made a couple of posts to the recent threads on the group, if they
show up...I'll know I was being paranoid. If they don't.....everyone really
does hate me.... and that car behind me the other day really was secret
government agents in cahoots with aliens from the Crab Nebula! Wish me luck!
:)
[Thanks again Andrew and Jan]

Ianto Jones, Torchwood.
The only reason I got paranoid about all this is because I dug into the
google archives last week and read up about when the moderated group first
went online. Some posters were accusing the group's regulars of being a
clique....and accusations of censorship on behalf of the mods were flying
around. My guess now is that perhaps they were just the trolls biting back.
Anyway.....all fine now. Glad to be proven wrong.
In the early days the newsgroup lost a lot messages. The fault appears
to have been fixed since.

Actually, I'm a moderator who cannot moderate (the sotware doesn't like AOL)over
there and I saw that Cheryl did send an answer to your question. I had a feeling
that you hadn't seen it which is why I posted even though Andrew had given you
the info you needed. I can forward it to you if you like.
In saying that, my posts are taking a good long while to appear. Posts sent
around 7pm yesterday (14th) are still not appearing as I type this (7:15am,
15th), yet other people's contributions are regularly cropping up in the
same thread. I'm wondering if this is because I'm new and being hand
moderated, as opposed to familiar regulars who get posted automatically? :/
Yes.
After sufficient OK posts you messages will go through automatically
except for new threads.

All new members are automatically on hand moderation for approximately the first
20 posts or so. Less an issue now than in times past, this would generally
discourage folks who joined just for the sake of sniping or trolling. Any's the
one who mainly moderates these days and she does so two or three times per day.
New threads are always hand moderated.
It doesn't look like it'll be long before you're off of hand-moderation, though.
Ahh, I see. Makes sense, I guess. :)
Cheers.
