It has just been brought to my attention (courtesy of the Guardian
obit) that Muriel Young died on March 24. Who? most of you say. Well
those of sufficiently advanced years who lived in the Associated
Rediffusion area will remember her along with some of the other
characters that this obituary I am reading is kind enought to remind
me of, viz Pussy Cat Willum, Ollie Beak, Wally Whyton and the immortal
Bert Weedon. Ah, proper children's telly!

Muriel Young...I think she was the first person I ever saw on TV when I
were a nipper....

RIP.

That's sad news.

At least Bert is still with us - Wally went a few years ago.

Last year, I was surprised to see that Muriel Young appeared in a 1956
episode of "Robin Hood" (the original and best version, with Richard Greene
and Alan Wheatley), which was repeated on the now-defunct Carlton Kids DTT
channel.

She appeared in a couple of British films around that time in small
roles. And I *think* played herself (as a continuity announcer) in 'I'm
All Right Jack'.

I remember her mostly from co-hosting a Radio Luxembourg programme
called 'EMI's Friday Spectacular', or similar, possibly with Ray
Orchard.

What sad news.

Apparently during a live (obviously) broadcast, Wally Whyton was
operating Ollie Beak, chatting and adlibbing with Muriel. At one
point, "Ollie" announced that he'd just come back from the Owls' Ball,
to which Muriel replied "Oh, Ollie I didn't know Owls *had* balls."

This, needless to say, brought fits of hysteria to all those off-screen,
but Ms. Young just sailed on taking it all in her stride.

RIP.

Eh? DTT channel? News to me - perhaps I can claim a copyright fee?

Even if you didn't live within the reach of the Crystal Palace transmitters
(yea, even unto the entire region covered by the masts on Rivington Pike),
you could see that series of programmes.
