As in the actor Darren Tighe. I'd always thought that it was pronounced Tie,
but I notice that in last week's episode of Holby City where some characters
had this surname, the pronunciations Teeg or Tiig (like "tiger" without the
"er") were used. Which is correct?

There was a character (plus his wife) called Tigh in Battlestar
Galatica. His name was pronounced "Teeg"
There was also a England rugby player called Mike Teague whose surname
was pronounced the same way.
I would assume it's the same for Tighe.
Cheers

But Tigh (no 'e') is Gaelic for 'house', and is pronounced 'tie'.

Its down to the individual owner of the name.

You're probably right, it's been a while since I watched it.

it tends to be pronounced tyeg, tie-ig, tayg or tie depending on the region
of the speaker - perhaps other ways too but these are the only ones
that i can remember encountering. i pronounce it tie-ig.

Not entirely sure why this thread has re-emerged from 2010, but
anyway... AIUI, Tighe is an Anglicisation of the Irish name Tadhg, which
here in Ireland at least is pronounced the way the OP suggested ("tiger
without the er").
