I've seen casualty off and on since the show originally started. Every time
I watch I can't believe what an awful actor Derek Thompson is. It's harder
to act well in soaps because of the number of takes, but you would think
after all these years he could be less wooden!

I can't decide whether Derek Thompson is a bit wooden or whether he's
portraying a character (Charlie) who is a bit wooden at times.

I get the same feeling watching him. Though I've never seen him in anything
else, I always assumed he was just playing Charlie, who is a bit dim, loves
his family, puts up with a lot of crap from a houseful of women and doesn't
really have any strong male friendships.

Oh he's wooden, take a look at The Long Good Friday. Mind you, apart from
Bob Hoskins and ( I still would ) Helen Mirren, you can't see the wooden
for the trees.

LOL!!!! He's the opposite of wooden. Totally over the top. I watched
the recent episodes where his missus is squished under the falling
rubble and she's brain dead in hospickle (a perfect match for him?).
His mouth goes all over his face doesn't it? Hard to take seriously.

It *is* hard to take seriously, isn't it? I always feel bad for giggling
when Marlon goes into his crying mode. But then I've seen people cry
uncontrollably IRL and it's never pretty. I think he's genuinely trying to
act his little socks off, bless 'im.

But yeah, he was beaten with the ugly stick as a child, which prob doesn't
help.

Was just speaking to someone about Marlon and his crying and they brought up
a fair point. How on earth do you even pretend that the person who you love
most in the world is brain dead? How do you begin to go about emulating the
emotions? I think fair play to the guy, actually - if that were my husband
there on the bed with tubes and machines, I think I'd lose the plot much
like he is. Acting out episodes of the stuff can't be easy. And I've always
thought that soap actors are only as good as the written material and the
direction they're given. I shall no longer laugh at Marlon. No,
really....<snigger> I won't!

Scary similarity! Yeah, he does have that lost-mongrel-scruffy-but-cute look
about him. If I found him on the street, I'd take home and put him by the
fire. (Before calling the RSPCA).

No, the council have a budget to deal with stray dogs, that's why they have
dog wardens. The RSPCA can't accept stray dogs. They will take other animals
however. The RSPCA will never put a healthy animal down, however I think Dog
wardens might. So if you do ever find Marlon wandering the street take him
to a Dog warden not the RSPCA....... ;)

I'm not an actor, but I guess you try and think of a tragedy that's
really happened to you in life, to drum up the appropriate emotion, or
you try and place your real life girlfiend/wife in a similar
situation. It's hard to do, but he is an actor fer crissakes.

HOWEVER someone should've said 'less is more' at some point. I've
never seen such an OTT performance, but that's why he's in a soap, I
suppose, and not in a prestige movie or TV series.

Unfair to single out Marlon. Many of the Emmerdale cast act like
they're in a pantomime. ;-)

Some years before the "hospital drama" started, Derek Thompson was a
familiar face in fairly serious UK television drama (often playing someone
involved in "The Troubles" - for obvious reasons - and sometimes playing
Scots). He was being touted as the next big thing.

From what I can remember though, he always played more or less the same
character every time (OK, slightly different takes on the same character) -
rather in the same way as Ricky Tomlinson can really only play Bobby Grant
and all his other parts have been closely-related to that character.

I suspect that both actors only play themselves - or varying facets of
themselves.

I think he's got worse recently, but that may be partly due to his rather
stiff-necked stance - an medical affliction of the actor Derek Thompson that
has developed over time.

Remembering Derek Thompson from various television things before
Casualty, it would seem that he is playing a character who is a bit
wooden: Derek Thompson.

He sometimes changes his accent, but it's the same role every time.
