Frank didn't even compose it. All he did was sing it and not very well. It's
incredible that fame can make the untalented, talented.

Well that's sort of true I suppose, esp. with regard to Steps. Did anyone
see TOTP last week, when the brunette was singing completely out of tune?
Tragic. But her eyes looked lovely and frightened, until her vanity/tone
deafness got the better of her and she thought she was doing alright.

She's the biz she is - and that duet is *marvellous*. And I'm afraid I also
like the Robbie and Nicole version as well - it's a great song, can't go
wrong, and that rhymes so it must be true.

Are you ready boots? Start walking.........

Oh yes, definitely. Whenever I hear that track on the radio I want to
throw something at it.

And speaking of insults against Frank Sinatra, who does Russell Watson
think he is calling his album "The Voice"? First the theme for the new
Star Trek show and now this...

CindyLover, wondering what'll happen if Nicole Kidman duets with a
real singer.

Agree. Why does everyone think that RW is *trying to be Sinatra* with his
new album? All he's doing is singing, rather well, some old swing songs!
The album, IMO, is terrific, as was the TV show. More power to the lad's
elbow - if he just calms down a bit and stops swearing, he could be really,
really big in a few years.

Oh, I dunno. The Sinatra style Italian suit? The trademark pork-pie hat? The
jacket over the shoulder? The covering of so many of the (easier to sing,
not the classic) Sinatra songs? The rip-off cover art? The fact that his
publicists have been plugging the Sinatra line ever since the Albert hall
show was booked? I really dunno.

Anyway, 'Oo-er you an worrav yer done wi Jacq-eh?'

I agree. Although I can see that he *can* be a bit of a tosser (well so can
everyone really can't they), I genuinely think that he is worthy of the
status of "Star", unlike most celebrities these days.

But why is that a problem? OK, so Robbie's making a mint out of "paying
homage" to Frank - can't say I blame him. But for me, Frank will always be
The Master.

I miss him terribly, cos he was one of those rare types that just gets more

I'm not disputing any of the points you make in your posts, John. I'm just
saying that at no time has RW ever said, intimated, claimed or implied that
he is "doing an impression of Sinatra". It's just twaddle made up by those
who have no time for him.

The lad is a talent, IMO. It's as simple - or as difficult - as that.

inevitably unfavourable.
BTW, did you know Blue Eyes could breath in through his nose while singing
out through his mouth? The secret of his ability to sustain effortlessly
those long molasses notes.

Neither have I said he's doing an impression. But he's inviting comparison
by singing Francis Albert's songs in FA's clothes in FA's studio with FA's
band and plastering FA's name all over the album. And, IMNSHO, he's crap at
it. He's not in the same league. If he wants to do Rat pack numbers, why
not dredge up some original treatments from the depths (shallows?) of his
musical abilities? There are lots of examples of original treatments of
classic songs that bring a whole new freshness - Cassidy's 'Over the
Rainbow', Flack's 'First Time Ever' or, for that matter, the Pistols' 'My
Way'.
If you sing in Blue Eyes' style, you get compared to Blue Eyes.
He's brilliant at being Robbie Williams & he can sing a bit. Someone should
tell him not to attempt dance steps of any kind & I think he would be more
successful as a comedian/impressionist - the old-style who would end his act
with a 'and now this is me' number.

No argument he's good at what he does and that he seems to be a generally
amiable and likeable bloke. But whoever's steering him along his current
course (and as John points out it's a pretty clearly cut Sinatra course)
is making a misjudgement. Firstly, the majority of his fan base are
unlikely to buy into it long term or in comparably great numbers,
secondly he's not good enough at it to bridge the gap between that
existing fan base and those who do enjoy these songs. When he's being
compared to Sinatra, unluckily for him, he's nowhere close to filling
those shoes.

Well, they seem to be buying it for the moment. Besides, the album
seems to have been promoted more as a stopgap side project between
"real" Robbie Williams albums - always a good way of covering your

There was this daft Science Fiction quiz on This Morning with R and J a
couple of years back, the contestants were all sort of has been actors in
Dr. Who etc. This dizzy dumb blonde (Amy something, with the squeaky little
voice?) was asked "What would you call the The Master of the Universe?"

She replied

"Sir?"

That's true. I think Robbie's great but then I'm also a great fan of
Frank. The track on the album where the two sing together shows that
his voice doesn not belong on the same compilation. Sinatra's voice
is so rich, he sends shivers down my spine......
