Hi,

My Blu-ray player recently gave up the ghost, just as my wife bought a
10-disc box set of Alias Smith and Jones.
I'm thinking of replacing it with a box that will record as well as
play. Most of my TV viewing is done via an Apple TV box. Can anyone
recommend a device that will be able to record the HDMI output from an
Apple TV box? Oh and play DVDs and Blu-rays of course!
I live in Spain, so built in Freeview or Freesat is not much use, and
most of the devices on sale seem to have that.

Thanks,
Steve

Since posting this I have learned about something called HDCP which
would explain why recording devices aren't sold with an HDMI input port.
So I guess I'll just buy something which will play discs :)

That doesn't explain why there aren't any DVD recorders that will record
SD video via SCART/component/composite connections. I used to have one
of those which was bristling with sockets. I think it was just
manufacturer/broadcaster collusion or manufacturer timidity. You can
still get DVD recorders that will record from their internal Freeview
tuners, and even Blu-ray recorders.

Possibly because the market for DVD recorders is shrinking rapidly and
even fewer want to record SD video.

That doesn't explain the existence (and continued availability) of ones
that *will* record from Freeview but not an external source, like the
Panasonic DMR-EX97: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B015341TLG/ which I possess.

Not being able to record SD video from an external source avoids the need
for an analogue to digital converter, since all the inputs that you'd record
from would be analogue - composite or RF. The ability to record from HDMI,
even from an SD source, is blocked by HDCP copy-protection.
