Every series that programme get sillier and sillier,
it could be so much better.
Generally they are though. I make my living out of PCs, but I absolutely
love the iphone and ipad, objects of functionality and beauty. The iphone 4
has a serious design flaw and it would seem silly for them not to draw
attention to it.
When it comes to smartphones, the iphone not only leaves the competition
behind, it redefined the whole concept. Are they faster smartphones out
there? do they have more features etc? Probably yes. But the iphone does it
all so easily, in fact you forget just how effortless it is to use until you
come across another smartphone and then it all changes into a chore.
Andriod is great, but it is still a poor mans iphone, I could certainly
tolerate it if the iphone didn't exist. But, if the iphone didn't exist we
would still all be using smartphones with a silly little stylus and a
Microsoft operating system with a start menu and a silly complicated process
for setting up just about anything.
Some of us find a Nokia 1100 adequate for use as a mobile phone.

However the results of the test weren't entirely accurate. For example
in the web/Twitter test they mentioned that the iPhone did
multi-tasking so to get from the browser to the homescreen you
double-tapped on the home button but on the HTC Desire it was far more
complicated. In fact on the Desire or any other Android phone you
press the home key once to achieve the same thing.
Double tap = easy
Single press = complicated
really ?

They mentioned there were a couple of 'minor niggles' - namely the
drop in signal if you hold it a certain way and problems with the
proximity sensor meaning you can mute the call when holing to your
ear.
So best smartphone ever, providing you don't want use it as a phone.
From everything I've seen, the "antennaegate issue" is mainly a US
problem. That is it only becomes an actual problem in a low-signal
situation, which is much more likely to happen in the US being shackled
to AT&T and its patchy coverage. Not nearly as much of an issue for us
on our tiny little island with a choice of multiple carriers. So in
reality, it's quite understandable why a *British* TV show wouldn't make
such a big issue of it.

I've never had an Apple or an Android phone, so can't truthfully comment on
that, but what you say still doesn't demonstrate an Apple fixation.

That's right.

Maybe, but they had no difficulty in actually using it, and you snipped out
where I said they did show that most people preferred the older phone.

I wouldn't necessarily expect you to know that, but I would expect the
Gadget Show to.
It's not as if pressing the home fey rather than continually pressing
the back key to re-trace your steps is a hidden un-documented feature.
Maybe expecting a journalist to spend 10 mins reading the manual
before writing a review is asking too much. To be honest anyone
gadget-savvy would probably discover it themselves after a few mins
usage without reading the manual.
It may not demonstrate an Apple fixation but does question how
impartial their reviews are. Either they were incompetent enough not
to understand how to use the device properly or they were deliberately
trying to mislead and skew the result.

In this week's Gadget Show, they tested in-ear headphones; but instead
of choosing iPods for the music source, they used Cowon MP3 players.
BTW: There's nothing new about zombie movies, so Jason created a 'new
experience' with 360 degree projection - except that's how cameras began
*centuries* ago (camera is Latin for a vaulted room) with live pictures
projected onto a similarly shaped screen using a set of lenses.

In this week's Gadget Show, they tested methods of drying out wet phones;
but instead of choosing Apple iPhones, they used Nokia Vodafones.
BTW: Throughout the piece, John referred to testing four phones; yet the

In this week's Gadget Show, they were challenged to improve a hotel room
with various tech; first up was to control various facilities with a smart
phone; but instead of choosing an Apple iPhone, they used a Blackberry.
Then Jason tested the Top 5 mobile gaming tech; of course the iPad came
first with its large screen, but the iPhone & the iPod were both beaten
by the Nintendo DSi at number 3, and the Sony PSP Go at number 2.
Back to the hotel, and a cumbersome door key was replaced with a mobile
phone; the Apple iPhone wasn't able to do that, but the Nokia did.
Finally, they tried a new method of controlling the room by voice through
a laptop; but instead of choosing an Apple iMac, they used a Siemens.

In this week's Gadget Show, lots of gadgets were tested 'to destruction'
including some smart phones and tablet PCs, several of which had not been
specially ruggedised... but they ignored the Apple iPhone and iPad.
Then they tested various wireless home music streaming systems, in which
the Apple AirPort Express was well beaten by the Sonos ZonePlayer S5.

In this week's Gadget Show, they tested cloud-based computing against hard
drive storage. The first two challenges were on desk-tops, yet for both the
Apple iMac was ignored. In a third challenge roaming the streets, Pollyanna

Also, Suzi tested the latest pay-as-you-go do-everything mobile phones, in
which the Apple iPhone failed to make the Top 5 since it's too expensive.

In this week's Gadget Show, Jon Bentley tested free satnav apps available
from the Android, Apple, and Nokia app-stores. The big winner was Ovi Maps
which is exclusive to Nokia, Google Maps Navigation for Android OS phones
was quite okay, and Skobbler on the Apple iPhone was severely beaten.
Skobbler's poor performance was made even worse because out of the three
smart phones tested, only the iPhone's GPS got lost in a built-up area.

In this week's Gadget Show, Ortis and Polly competed in a Monopoly style
race across London, using augmented-reality satnavs on their smart phones
to find the way. Contrary to what 'Ar' might claim, the show's producers
did not fix the race to help Polly with her Apple iPhone, they fixed the
race to help Ortis with his HTC phone giving him a 5 minute head start.
This was just as well since Ortis was delayed by losing his 3G signal,
enabling Polly to catch up - except the battery in her iPhone then died
after less than two hours use, so once again the Apple lost out.

In last week's (I've been abroad) Gadget Show, Jason & Ortis sought out
techy Christmas presents for girls. Jason looked at tablet PCs, in which
the Samsung Gt-P1000 Galaxy Tab beat the Apple iPad, since this fails to
provide support for Flash and cannot make voice and/or video calls.
It seemed at first that Apple was going to get a look-in when Ortis chose
the Tizi Mobile TV accessory for the iPhone; however both Polyanna & Susie
scorned this in favour of the Galaxy since this is superior to an iPad.

In this week's Gadget Show, the boys took part in a winter cross-country
race; in which Jason navigating with the Navionics Ski: Europe 2011 app on
an iPhone, was beaten by Ortis using his Satsports Multi-Sports GPS.
Suzi Perry then reviewed her Top 5 apps of 2010; in which Apple's iMovie
especially designed for the iPhone 4, and Hipstamatic for any iPhone, were
both beaten by PingChat for the Blackberry. Her no.1 app was Angry Birds
which originated at iTunes last year, while 2010 is when the game exploded
following its release onto other platforms running under Android or Ovi.

In this week's Gadget Show, although the presenters chose the iPad as the
gadget of the year, this was the first win for Apple since last August.

In this week's Gadget Show, four members of dance group Flawless tested
small MP3 players suited to vigorous exercise. Firstly, the Sony NWZ-W252
was eliminated as too hard to control whilst prancing around, then the Nu
Dolphin Touch was rejected since it kept falling off. This left both the
iPod Nano 6th Generation & the Sandisk Sansa Clip+ as equally useful, so
all nine dancers judged sound quality... and each preferred the iPod.

In this week's Gadget Show, the 'big news' was Steve Jobs unveiling Apple's
successor to the iPad, except this item was relegated to their website.
Then Ortis tested the Top 5 toys at the 2011 London Toy Fair, in which the
iPod accessory AppToyz AppGun was beaten by the iBall 3 puzzle game.
Apple score so far: WON 4, LOST 17, IGNORED 11
So they haven't featured the new 3D DS then yet?
If nothing else it boasts a feature that enables
people in rival gangs to shoot each other safely
using a more appealing and intuitive interface
than clunky, error-prone, reality. And scores
can be kept automatically.
I'd be happy enough with a phone that will play me
Radio 4 without my having to plug a minijack adaptor
in, or that useless piece of wire with a minijack on
the end that the Queen's own surveillance corps
(t/a British Telecom, t/a 02) use for mind control
and to homeopathically store the essence of your
mood during a conversation to contextualise any
ambiguous comments delivered as sarcasm, irony
or otherwise syntactically encrypted...

Why would they? You can't buy it here yet.

In this week's Gadget Show, Jon & Polyana tested four top smartphones in a
series of challenges. Firstly the Blackberry Torch was eliminated because
its keyboard was too fiddly, and then the HTC HD7 was out due to its poor
camera. In a final battle the iPhone 4 was being outperformed by the rival
Nexus S when it suddenly died, for reasons which were not made clear.

Presumably its battery ran dry. Those big 4 inch screens don't run on
fresh air y'know.

United States: Renewable Energy Across the Globe - Part 1: USA Regulatory
Framework
23 February 2011
Article by Boyd G. Carano, Mike Tomsu and Claire Wilby
Federal v State: Renewable Energy
Regulatory Framework
In the United States, regulation of the electricity sector and renewable
energy is split between the federal government and each of the 50 state
governments. With the exception of the majority of Texas, the rest of the
country (including California) is simultaneously governed by both Federal
Energy Regulatory Commission regulations and the state agency responsible
for the electric industry.
a.. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission
b.. North American Electric Reliability Corporation
c.. Internal Revenue Service
d.. Department of Energy and Treasury Department
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is the independent agency that
regulates the interstate transmission of electricity within the United
States. Its role also covers the certification of the electric reliability
organization, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC).
NERC has authority over the establishment and enforcement of reliability
standards for the bulk power system in the United States and the operation
by the independent system operators in the various reliability councils
operated within the United States. Below is a map of the eight reliability
councils operating in North America:
With the exception of licensing of hydropower projects, the Federal Energy
Regulatory Commission generally has no authority over the construction or
siting of power generating plants and does not regulate the retail sale of
electricity to consumers, which falls to the individual state regulatory
commissions (to the extent that a particular state has not opted for
deregulation of its retail electricity market).
The Internal Revenue Service has jurisdiction over all federal tax matters.
This includes administration of all federal tax incentive programs for the
development of renewable energy. Finally, certain federal funding and grant
programs related to the renewables industry are administered by the
Department of Energy and/or the Treasury Department.
In the United States, individual states generally have the authority to
regulate the retail sale of electricity to consumers and to regulate the
services provided by electric utilities operating in their state. This
regulation of rates and services is typically performed by a state public
utility commission. The jurisdiction of the state public utility commission
typically also includes the power to license the construction and siting of
transmission lines and power generating facilities. In some cases,
individual states, through the adoption of state legislation, have
deregulated the generation of electricity as well as the retail sale of
electricity to consumers.

of Texas and California, two leaders in U.S. renewable energy generation.

In this week's Gadget Show, Suzi Perry recommended App Inventor available
from Google for the Android phone platform, and totally ignored Apple.
