Ecclestone could act. Tennant was an even better actor.
Matt Smith is not in their league, and is a step back to
the 70s and 80s (well, not quite as bad as McCoy!)
Then you have the companions. Billie Piper and
Catherine Tate were surprisingly good, given they'd
made their names in other fields. Karen Gillan had
great screen presence but was anchored to a tree
named Rory. Jenna-Louise Coleman: the jury's out
but the character Clara has not yet gelled.
The main writers? Russell T Davies cared more
about characters than plots, which he would
generally tie up in the last five minutes with
the deus ex machina of the week.
Stephen Moffat is the opposite, with complex
plots, time paradoxes, and all those fashionable
"hero's journey" ideas, but often the characterisation
goes to pot. (Oh, and jokes.)
