I notice that Pick is starting a run of Stargate Universe. I've seen mixed
reviews for this show, but as I've never seen it so I'm going to give it a
go.

Also, at the same time, I see they are about to start showing Voyager series
2. Have they shown series 1 already and I missed it or are they starting
here?

I was very disappointed with Universe, they seemed to go all 'arty', it
improved in series two but they binned it just as it was getting worth
watching.

Never liked that either, couldn't stand the captain, maybe my loss.

I was absolutely gutted with SGU. It really should have been the best of
the franchise and they completely blew it. I dragged my self through S1,
and ditched it early in S2. Wasn't shocked when it was cancelled.

It was really tedious at times, but there were some pretty good
episodes, unless one is a complete Trek geek who gets insane of little
inconsistencies.

Wow, so now there will be three shows actually worth watching on
Pick. Thanks for the heads up!

P.S. I've just noticed that they are starting to show Modern Family and
The Middle on Pick as well! Have Sky finally decided to use their
Freeview channel as more than a place holder I wonder?

It's gets pretty good once 7 of 9 gets on board, but the last season
wasn't great. If fact I'd say that if the episode is mainly about the
Doctor or 7 of 9 then it's usually worth watching.

It will be interesting to see how many episodes I watch before I lose
the will to live. :-)

I am a big fan of Voyager and have lost count of the number of times I
have watched the whole lot through but all that proves is that different
shows appeal more (or less) to different people.

I agree they are some of the better episodes by I also like the double
act of Tom and Harry so enjoy those episodes quite a bit too.

Pure fluke as I don't routinely bother to check what they are showing on
Pick but good fortune meant that I was scrolling down the EPG to set a
recording up on a higher numbered channel for the same time of day that
SGU is to be shown and spotted it.

Let's hope so as they have tons of shows available to them and some of
us would be more than happy for just a few crumbs.

its started off well enough, but they went nuclear far too soon on the two
leads and there was just no way back from breaking the narrative structure
like that and it ended up just being a poor imitation of SG1/SG Atlantis style
stories again.

which is fine if you liked that stuff, but SGU was supposed to be, like
Enterprise, a different style

Yeah, I can see that. Scorpion P1 and P2 were brilliant. The beginning
acts was simply chilling. Well, in Trek terms, anyway.

The problem with the last season was that I knew it was the end and
wanted a great build up to a wild finale. But what we got was the usual
episodic stuff then bang, a 2 ep finale from no where. It was a good fun
finale, but I felt the series deserved something more.

You reminded me of one great episode though. That one where 7 and the
doc swap bodies. Both actors were simply brilliant at playing each
other. It really showed what great actors they could be.

Indeed. Years ago they did used to show older episodes of good shows
like 24, BSG and Futurama, but then they stopped and just filled
their schedules with trash. I suspect it was because they wanted to
turn Sky3/Pick into a pay channel, but I think they might have finally
abandoned that idea.

I actually stopped watching the show during the last season when it was
first broadcast as I got so bored with it.

Yep, and the chemistry between those two were often the only thing that
made the show worth watching. There was another brilliant episode
where 7 of 9 tries to start dating and the Doc falls in love with
her and there were some really touching and amusing scenes in it.

Had a look at the EPG and it would seem there
is a reason various tabloids have picked up on
odd stories about Derek Acorah...he's on Pick
too--along with Sally Brampton and Sexcetera,
shows from Ftn/Virgin and whoever's days.

I'm guessing you'll have missed series 1 as, if
it's on daily through the week, the station's been
in place long enough; I am a bit surprised I'd not
noticed it at all in the EPGs but, as I'm too
syncopated to follow it, it's no great shakes. Thanks
for the heads up though.

Surely Sky3/Pick has always been a Sky taster to encourage people to sign up
to Sky satellite.

And does anyone know why Pick maintains Sky3's belief that [SL] in the
Freeview EPG means SubtitLes and not Sign Language as everyone else does?

I came across this, then found that the first episode was 3 hours long
so I couldn't be bothered. I gave up watching SG1 around Season 4.

That's right, in fact I'm using a 7 of 9 mouse mat at this moment!

Totally agree, Fred.

Any chance that Pick will start showing "Lost" ?

If that's so, they've been doing a lousy job.

That was exactly what it used to be and I always thought that was a good
use of the channel, but like I said I think Sky just wanted it to be
a proper pay channel at one point. Personally I don't think that having
wall to wall reality TV shite like Nothing To Declare or Road Wars on
Pick, is going to encourage people to subscribe to Sky though.

They don't half like to make things confusing. I had to watch episode 1
twice to understand what the hell was going on.

For a start, I had only seen the original film before, with present-day
humans and all the advanced technology being alien. In 'Universe' humans had
FTL spaceships and beaming up and down, so the contrast in technologies
wasn't so pronounced. And then the invasion by alien species that Earth
seemed to be at war with - virtually Star Trek.

And why did they have to keep dodging back and forth in the narrative so
much? The bits on Earth were comprehensible, except that some seemed to be
dream sequences or memories or something, but then you have (a) the modern
Earth spaceship, (b) the base on the distant planet that got blown up and
(c) the ancient alien spaceship. I had to concentrate to see where we were
as they were rather similar environments, except that some were more tatty.
And the narrative connection between the three wasn't clear until we were
some way through the episode.

Exactly - they'd do better to show programmes that have been done to death
on Sky, but which would garner good audiences if shown on Freeview.

I hear that "Mad Men" gets only 30,000 viewers now it's just on Sky.

Although I don't want them to show BSG as I've only just bought the

I know and that's despite an amount of media coverage that it totally
out of proportion to the popularity of the show.

I thought Air/Darkness was quite dreadful, with the most annoying cast
of characters I've ever encountered, and plots that were only saved from
being totally boring by being utterly ridiculous - one example, after all
that trouble to find the gypsum for the air scrubbers, they returned with
one rucksackful, to keep a huge spaceship going for months or years.

And then we watched "District 9" - totally brilliant, terrific SciFi!!
