Was it just me, or did Monday night's episode of Family Affairs
make absolutely no sense?
Kill off half the cast, leave the worst alive, and move on...
Think they just ruined a good show...

Gillian stopped doing the Hustle and noticed that on Tue, 2 Feb 1999

Not only that, just before the Harts got turned into charred shrapnel
they went through personality changes which will be familiar to anyone
who watched and survived 'Coronation Street - The Brian Park Years'.

Annie - nice family woman suddenly exposed as cheatin' lyin' tart.
Cue ridiculous paternity test (Nick Tripp? Yeah, right) and then gets
off with Dave. Yeah, sure.

Holly - confused would be lesbian suddenly falls for a man twice her
age and completely unattractive in every sense (see God's Gift to
Women - yes, you guessed - arseface Dave again). She was better off
with Susie. Just *what* would Holly see in Dave? Again, yeah, sure.

Claire - demure single mum suddenly latches up with Pete Callan and
become Superbitch Porn Queen. Yeah, sure.

Maria - ex-relatively sympathetic character turns into Woman With
Mission To Have Baby and even tries to seduce Serge. Yeah, sure.

At least Jamie, Chris and Angus were suitably miserable and whingey.
No change there then and I won't be sorry to see them go.

Pretty much all the new characters are awful and uninteresting and I'm
going to miss Holly and Annie especially. Totally ruined a good
programme.

Forgive me for being ignorant, but what happened to them? I haven't been
able to watch Family Affairs for a while - since Jack killed himself - and
I'm damn annoyed that I missed them all karking it! :-)

Maybe the good actors got better job offers from someone else and left
en masse?

I think this is very unlikely. Most actors are out of work most of the time,
so the odds on them all becoming hot property at once are low. Casts don't
rush out of them like lemmings either - a soap job for a few years is a
prized job because i) it can appear at short notice, even when your career
seems to be going nowhere (soap characters can have less than a week's notice
of starting) ii) you don't have to have hype surrounding you and/or famous
relatives and a powerful agent to be in the running (as you do with, say,
getting a start in prestigious costume drama) - your face just has to fit
perfectly. No, this one's got management decision written all over it!

Namedrop alert: My wife was at drama school with a Hart...

I used to watch if frequently when it started, although gave it up long
ago, however from the few episodes I have seen between now and then, it
seems to me that it has gone so ridiculous that it is unbeleiveable.

I mean, first Helen dies in car tcrash on the wedding on teh
anniversary of sally's death, then liam robs a post office, then elsa
goes mad, and gets killed, then jack kills himself, then the last parts
get even silliar.

If you ask me they just wanted to kill teh family off to start afresh.

Notice the new opening credits etc.

I know - The charecters hit the roof of madness!

This I found the weirdest. Going with pete was SOOO out of her
charecter.

: Maria - ex-relatively sympathetic character turns into Woman With

And serge isnt his real name either!?! Why call a bloke by a name only
used to pull customers?

I Miss Angus, I liked him. Him, Elsa, the lady in the shop, and the
woman with red hair, are the only ones I like.

Indeed. They are all horrible, especially dave and family. I don't like
the girl with the earings etc. either, she's just annoying, and who are
these new people?

The only two that I have time for is the mother in teh shop, and the
lady with the red hair (shes funny she is)

Jim - Who new it was the end when they killed off peanut.

Angus, Chris, Annnie, Holly, Mel, sam, and Jamie got blown up at Mellany
and Roys wedding. Thats the second wedding that has ended in people
dying. :/
