I see why this was left till last - the weakest of them all and the
least successful , no real excitement like with the scalextric and
altogether very disappointing.

I loved this! Saying that I don't think I've seen any of the others, but
thought it was great stuff. Reminded me of my own train set.

Sad that some swine stole half their batteries. But I agree, it was a
bit of a downer to put on at Xmas.

You would have thought they'd simply put a new train on the track for
the last leg ?!

That would have defeated the whole point of the exercise which was to
get a model train to run *all* the way from Barnstaple to Bideford....

I watched that new programme where Oz went around the country with
Hugh Dennis and it seemed weird for him to working with someone who
wasn't constantly arguing with him!

I felt sorry for all the people who worked on the last few miles of
track and stayed up all night and still never got to see a train
running on their track! I think the terrible weather kind of killed
off the attempt as it washed all kinds of crap onto the tracks and
made the trains slip which then damaged the trains. If they had
decent weather then I reckon they might have got the trains to
go the distance. Plus modern models aren't as tough as they used
to be and they might have been better off using some old Hornby
Dublo locos. If James had got his old Flying Scotsman working
properly then it might have been a bit more resilient than the
modern models.

True, I have a Hornby Silver King in the loft, the abuse it went through
in my youth would have wrecked a modern set but the last time I set it
up it worked fine, mental not to get it down to show the granddaughter.

Oh but that was awful to watch, Hugh Dennis just looked bemused and
embarrassed by it all.

It was all a bit of a shame and anticlimax, I still think they
deliberately put this on last because of it. I did wonder about using
older trains but 10 miles is a very long way considering they are only
expected to go round a metre of track a few times then stop.

It's a reference to Top gear the Bolivia trip where Clarkson called him
Ted Nugent because of his bandanna he was wearing.

Silver King?? Do you mean Silver Fox or a GWR King?? Yes, to show the
grand daughter, that's the excuse that you need isn't it? :)

As a railway modeller, I was rather bemused by the poor performance of
the trains and can only put it down to an abundance of that well-known
chemical contaminant Sh1T.

Over the years, the complaint from UK modellers has always been that
the British stuff compared rather badly in all respects to the models
available from the Continent and in the US.

However, in recent times, the perception is that British manufacturers
have really got their act together producing some of the best highly
detailed, well performing and reliable models around.

Certainly, I know of one modeller whose huge OO layout is largely in
their garden and operates reliably in all weathers with a variety of
makes.

The trick is to keep the track clean, I guess a bit difficult when
you’ve got nine miles of it.

LOL, works for me, and Yes it is the Silver King, an A4 in green, I've
just looked on ebay and someone is asking 105. The one I have is the
three rail model though so it might not be worth as much then again it
is about 50 years old.

The maker of the live album with the best name ever, "Intensities In Ten

You are right there was a Silver King. That's my trainspotting cred
down the drain then!
