Hi,

Apologies if my hearing was failing me (and also my girlfriend) but
did Chandler claim that he was a wank, when he was caught by Joey
admitting that he didnt like the 'Buddy' bracelet gift???

Please, if anyone has it on tape, play it back and see if he did or
not. As far as I know from US relations and friends, wank is not a
usual expression in the States, and if it is, it surely can't mean
what it means in UK colloquial language (for US readers unfamiliar
with our [UK] usage, it refers to one who, shall we say, is a "spanker
of his monkey").

Grateful of all replies, 'specially others who thought they heard what
I heard!!

Steve.

Well, my gf, me and a mate all thought he said *wank*. As to why - I
haven't got a clue....perhaps he's trying to be cosmopolitan in his
slang?

Sounded like it to me. As to why - maybe because he is?

Not from the US, but I've come across this before (to coin a phrase).
Wank doesn't have the same meaning in the US - I think it means
something along the lines of "dork". Check out the Married...with
Children episode where Peggy reveals her maiden name as Wanker. ;-)

I'm pretty sure it was wink, which I assume means schmuck or rat or
something like that, but what was way more blatant was the gag about the
bracelet and his sex life. I think it was pretty obvious he was talking
about wanking("...when I get used to the extra weight I'll be back on
track in no time..."), and I don't think I ever noticed a refernce to
that in an American sitcom before.

But feel free to enlighten me if you have.

Definitely "wank" - I was watching with 888 subtitles at the time.

It was "wank", but as with some other UK words (like "fanny"), it
is used more innocently (if thats the right word).

I first remember seeing it in on eof the Space Quest games (4 or 5
I think) where it referred to your character being a
"Wank-Meister"...

Any takers for that honorary position?

You're not the only ones, there were three of us watching it and were
equally surprised! (We weren't sad enough to rewind, though :-)

It is strange though, because AFAIK it's not even a word in the US, all
of my American friends have had to have it explained to them (when the
need arose). Maybe it was just something else that sounded the same, or
maybe the scriptwriters just didn't know it's precise usage, merely knew
it as something we say .....

I've seen the episode about 8 times, and he says wank. I've used it before
I heard it on the show to mean dork, jerk, etc. Until reading this, I
never knew of the UK meaning. Over here, as far as I know, it doesn't mean
the same thing. If it does, my friends must think I'm insane.

So what does it mean on the other other (repetition intentional) side
of the world, then? When Paul Hogan used to do his Australian TV show
(before the days of Crocodile Dundee and his film career), he used to do
skits featuring a stuntman character, and I'm sure this character's name
was Leo Wanker.

Any thoughts?

My thought is that he was using it in the same sense we understand it.
After all, it was a comedy sketch show and in the UK it was shown rather
late in the evening.

Yep he said "Wank".  I remember distinctly as I thought it was quite funny.  I'm from the U.S. and to me, IMHO, the way he said it was like saying he was a prick or a dick, but you can't quite say that on T.V. so they used wank.  So in a way it does mean the same thing.  I've heard it as the meaning mentioned below too.  We seem to be borrowing quite a lot from other countries for slang, of course look at our language too, lots of differnet origins.

I remember an interview with Phil Collins (of Phil Collins' Genesis fame) on his
time as a guest star on Miami Vice playing a drug dealer (really?). One of his
lines when talking with Crockett and Tubbs was 'You must think I'm a right
wanker.' Questioning the scriptwriters about whether they _really_ wanted him
to say the line as written, he got the clear impression that they had no idea
what the word meant (or at least of its English semantics).

Is there a form of smart drug on the market that will free up the memory
wasted remembering this?

Just thought I'd share.

As I come from the same country as PH, I can clear things up and tell
you, decisively, that, yes, it most certainly means the same as it does
in UK - for one to "slap the salami" so to speak (not sure of a
eupohomism for females). We do also tend to use it playfully as a name
for a dork, or an idiot - ie "gee, you're a wanker", so that may help to
clear up the orignal question - although I wasn't aware they used ANY
form of that word in their slang.

Hope I've been some help :-)

It was used 3 times in one of NBC's premieres last night (Suddenly Susan
perhaps?), so it looks like it could become a popular phrase over here.

Seems to mean 'inconsiderate bastard' in a friendly kinda way.

It showed up in the new Brooke Shields comedy vehicle last night.
Possibly the US has adopted the UK meaning of 'useless git' without
reference to the activity behind it. Not to be confused with 'wonk'
meaning an expert on something normal people consider above/beneath
them.

Filthy ears. I think he said something like "He's the one who wants to
boff (or something close to that) the maniac." I hope our censorship
levels haven't fallen to that level :-)

It was used repeatedly on "Suddenly Susan" in reference to the guy she
left at the altar. I wonder if other networks are using it or of it's
just an NBC thing.

I AM from the US, and yes, "wank" in this context means dork, jerk,
etc. What would Chandler being a wank mean in the UK?

Well, it wouldn't make much sense as "to wank" means "to masturbate"
and therefore he would be a "wanker" not a "wank".

[Hey! It's great to be able to use those words and not feel guilty
because it's educational. Just like those films they show you in
school, of people having sex, which would only be 'under the counter'
quality if shown anywhere else!]

They never showed any at my school. Did I have a deprived childhood?

No, Guy. Sounds like Peter led a depraved one.

I did have some sex education flicks at my school, but everyone wasn't
serious, they were all giggling and laughing......I was taking notes.

Oh, that's nothing. My English teacher played us the Zeferelli (sp?) of
Romeo and Juilet, complete with half the sonnets taken out, and an utterly
gratuitous fight scene and of course the obligatory nude scene put in instead,
of Juliet *after* she'd spent the night with Romeo. Plus she was only 14, but
still seemed fairly well equipped for someone within that department. You could
have dropped a pin in the room - it might have deflated some things...

BBC adaptations just didn't seem the same after that.

Hi,
I saw the episode and yes he did say wank. Hope I could help.

Yes Chandler did say 'wank', but in America it means a joker.

Given the era, it could well do... I remember starting to hear "wanker"
on visits to America in the 90's, as they thought (or had been told by
some visiting wag) that it was just a cute British term of endearment.

Peggy's maiden name in "Married with Children" was 'Wanker" (and she was
from Wanker County), which must have been deliberately chosen, in a
"getting crap past the radar" sense.

Checking TV Tropes, it was also the name of Mindy's landlord in "Mork &
Mindy":

Or perhaps they just didn't like you?

Just here to reinvigorate this 1996 thread by saying I was wondering the same thing recently. Great to see this still hasn't been fully resolved. Perhaps in a century, historians and linguists will be perplexed by this episode of Friends and turn to this thread as a primary source.
