Although lest we forget, they didn't actually win.
I suppose it's good of them to set off that siren at the start as if to say
"Warning: generic RnB approaching".

> New Entries/New Peaks
> ---------------------
> Top 10 : BEP #3,

Impressively, they managed to find a live recording of this that sounded
even worse than the record.

> Kesha #6,

Or Ke$ha, if you prefer. I don't.
Out on CD on the 30th.

>Chase & Status #9,

Featuring the vocals of Plan B, which is notable as it's the first Top 40
hit for either of them and crashes into the Top 10. Presumably this is as a
result of promotion for the film, although I've only seen the posters so
far.

>Lady Gaga (BR) #10

Now I've heard the Kesha record, I think Gaga should be even more annoyed.

> Top 20 : Snow Patrol #15,

A song apparently written by Gary Lightbody and Jacknife Lee for Gwen
Stefani. She obviously didn't like it, so it's been reclaimed as a
promotional tool for a best-of compilation. It's grown on me somewhat since
I first heard it, but
still isn't the side of them I'm most interested in.

> Paolo Nutini #17,

Something rather more distinctive than the Snow Patrol single, despite his
history of blandness.

>Calvin Harris #18,

And only 18 months ago his career seemed dead and buried. Now he can claim a
second album with four Top 20 hits on it. This is deservedly the smallest
though.

> Journey #19

Now, here's something remararkable. Not the record, obviously, which is just
drab, turgid, self-important bobbins of the first water, but the fact that
this is the first track to be propelled into the Top 20 after a performance
by an X-Factor contestant (not counting records by the contestants
themselves, obviously). It's also the first ever UK Top 40 hit by this lot,
although they somehow managed a Top 10 album as long ago as 1983.

> Top 30 : Bon Jovi #25,

'We Weren't Born To Follow' is the title, although as time goes on it's
harder to believe that Bon Jovi were actually born at all and not just
cloned in some lab somewhere.

>Beyonce #27 (finally!),

Already the sixth charting track from the album.

>Chris Brown #29

Earlier this week, Ian Brown was arrested over an alleged assault. I'm
starting to think my brother had the right idea by changing his surname.

> Top 40 : Laura White #32

Debut solo single from the singer who was voted out of last year's X-factor
in the earlier rounds, although she may have been on that awful version of
'Hero'.Whether her talents deserved better is hard to tell behind the
low-budget Rihanna production.

> New Entries outside the top 40 (plus new peaks) : Pixie Lott (CME) #45,

Next single, of course.

> Jamie Cullum #55,

He is indeed 'All Over It Now'. If "it" is Radio 2.

>Sean Kingston #56,

Still haven't heard this, or indeed seen any evidence beyond the chart that
it exists. I'm fine with that though.

>Pink #62,

Boring ballad.

> Oasis #71

And speaking of boring ballads... Mind you, this peaked at 2 in 2002, so
it's a re-entry.
I think somebody died in one of the soaps, that's probably it.

> Re-entries T75 : Bon Jovi (LOAP) #52,

Seems to have gained almost as much from their recent promotional tour as
the single they were trying to publicise.

> Beyonce (SL) #72, (Halo) #74,

See above and below. Unless people are just downloading 'Halo' because they
can't tell it apart from the new one.

>G&R (SCOM) #75

I needn't tell you where this song was featured last weekend. Although
apparently it was sung by a woman - I don't know if Sheryl Crow's
disappointed.

> Albums
> ------
> Cheryl, surprisingly, comes from well behind to push Bon Jovi into 2nd.

Apparently it was pretty close though.
Maybe all their fans are saving up for their London concerts next summer?
Only 1300 for a front-row seat.

> New Entries/New Peaks
> ---------------------
> Top 10 : Bon Jovi #2,

Apparently, Bon Jovi were only required to supply a couple of new songs for
a best-of album, but "luckily" they were feeling so inspired they made a
whole album. Indeed, Richie Sambora might be the only person left in the
world who could say "I think people are going to dig it, man. And it rocks
hard." with a straight face. Tracks like 'Work For The Working Man' and
'Brokenpromisedland' are apparently Bon Jovi's own response to the credit
crunch.

>Foo Fighters #4,

A long-awaited Greatest Hits package, for once. So long, in fact, that
they've had more hits than will fit on the CD, so the hard-to-find single
version of 'Walking After You' is one notable omission. They did find space
for three new tracks, including the current hit 'Wheels' and an acoustic
'Everlong'.
The deluxe version adds a DVD with most of the videos (including the
aforementioned 'Walking After You' but apparently not 'Breakout') and a
couple of live tracks from their old DVDs.

>Katherine Jenkins (UC) #9

Possibly cashing in, Universal follow her debut for another label by
assembling 14 (or 17 in this country) tracks from the catalogue they already
own. There seem to be a lot of duets with Rhys Meirion, whoever he is.
The special edition adds a live mini-album including "unreleased songs" -
they mean unreleased by her, obviously.

> Big climb : Beyonce 53-8.

By far the most successful of several deluxe editions this week, although I
suppose Pitbull could have set a new peak for all I know. Just in case you
missed the previous two versions of the album, the "Platinum" edition of the
album adds three new tracks, a remix of 'Ego' with Kanye West and a bonus
DVD that has videos for seven of the tracks plus a "fan exclusive" video of
'Ego' What, does it jump out of the player if you only like her a bit or
something?

> Top 20 : Sting #15,

Far be it from me to suggest that Sting has in any way run out of ideas, but
If On A Winter's Night is his album of music for this time of year, mostly
traditional tunes but with a two re-workings of his own material.
A deluxe hardback version has two extra songs and a making-of DVD.

> Bee Gees #19

Supposedly timed for the fiftieth anniversary of their formation, Ultimate
Bee Gees has most of the same tracks on it that have been on their other
compilations, although I don't think they normally include 'Fanny, Be Tender
With My Love' for some reason...
The bait for fans is a DVD with 18 songs on it.

> New entries/new peaks outside the top 20 : FGTH #27,

Frankie Say Greatest - Chris says Relax, Don't Do It! - is their third
compilation, which of course outnumbers their studio albums. And of course,
most of the songs that casual listeners know are from the first album
anyway, so this follows the pattern of the previous two retrospectives by
including most of that album with a couple of songs from the second album
and the obligatory remixes.
The deluxe format has a bonus CD with a few more remixes and three cover
versions.
Apparently Holly Johnson only agreed to promote this on condition that the
record company re-release his first two solo albums.

>Nirvana #32,

A second mention for Dave Grohl this week, with a live CD (and DVD for an
extra few quid) of their famous performance at the 1992 Reading Festival,
which Kerrang! apparently once voted the most important gig of all time.
It's a career-spanning set, and has obviously been available on bootlegs
since, well, 1992 but this is apparently the first legitimate release of the
whole show.
Fifteen years ago this week, they were at Number One with the Unplugged In
New York album, and they also had a second charting live set with 1996's
From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah.

>Rod Stewart #35,

Actually, neither a new entry nor a new peak - this entered and peaked at 19
about 50 weeks ago.
I suppose it's gained from publicity for his new album.

>Slayer #41,

The tenth studio album from the thrash pioneers, but apparently the first
one they've written entirely in the studio. Are they sure they want to boast
about that?
The extra DVD in the deluxe version is apparently a 20-minute animated
graphic novel.

> Julian C #46,

Debut solo album from the lead singer and writer of The Strokes. Of course,
all three of their albums to date have gone Top 2, but this is said to be a
more experimental project.

> Flight OTC #47,

Second studio album from the New Zealand comedy folk act who I have to
assume are funny in context.

>Skunk Anansie #74,

Rather after-the-event Greatest Hits collection from the Nineties political
rockers who have in fact reunited to promot this and even released two new
singles to little reaction. There's a special edition version with the
videos on DVD and a pricey box set with loads of remixes and TV
performances.

>Joss Stone #75

Just about scraping in after all, despite what may well be the worst album
cover of 2009 (so bad, in fact, that the American record company refused to
use it). There are certainly an eclectic range of guest stars on here,
including Raphael Saadiq, Nas, David Sanborn, Jeff Beck and Jamie Hartman of
Ben's Brother semi-fame. In fact, that track was released as a Ben's
Brother/Anastacia single last week, so it's managed to flop twice in a
fortnight.

> Re-entries : Bon Jovi (CR) #43

May contain music that's not terrible.

> Next Week
> ---------
> Singles

> Leona inevitably #1

Agreed.

> Top 5 : Kesha,

Looks like it must be in with a chance of Number 2.

>Britney

Don't even think I've heard this.

> Top 10 : Sugababes

Mind you, 'Get Sexy' did better than we expected.

> Top 20 : Bandaged,

Because it's second time around and not Christmas? Yep, I think I'd agree.

> N-Dubz,

I suppose they have an outside chance of Top 10. But it seems a busy week.

>Peter Andre,

Not sure about this one.

> Will Young

About the best he could hope for.

> Top 40 : Athlete,

Again, I presume you're allowing for its being a charity record?

> As always, there are bound to be download releases I don't know about.

There is some odd YouTube thing for Children in Need that might get to
Number 40...
And whilst you obviously do know about it, Pixie Lott might climb.

> Albums
> ------
> In the Robbie v JLS battle, I expect the former to prevail.

So do I, but then two weeks ago it never even crossed my mind that that
could be a question.

> Top 10 NE : JLS, Biffy Clyro, Jamie Cullum, Snow Patrol

Difficult to argue with any of those.

> Top 20 NE : Donnie & Marie Osmond,

I know nothing about this record except that it exists. But that's probably
enough.

>Killers,

Hmm... seems about right.

>Miley Cyrus,

Not a whole album, but I presume it's priced accordingly.

>Rod Stewart,

Yep, although it looks like there's been more promo than I'd expect.

> Shirley Bassey

On balance, yes.

> Others : Amerie,

Is she really that popular?

>Howard Jones,

In 2009?

>Martha Wainwright

Hard to know - it is all in foreign and stuff.

Also, Neil Diamond is one act who might have a chance of charting a
Christmas album in the UK.

True, although that is a tough yardstick. Perhaps a fairer comparison would
be with their own 'Beat Again'.
Which reminds me that they're apparently the eighth act to claim two
chart-topping singles in 2009.

Perhaps, but on this occasion I can see his point. It's not really that good
of the record company to be holding them back in this day and age,
especially when they keep rehashing the same FGTH material.
Coincidentally, I heard an East German on the radio today who was dancing to
Johnson's hit 'Americanos' when the news came through about the Berlin Wall.

A colleague of mine has just bought one of the many other Rod compilations.

As of now it's at Number One (ahead of BEPs, JLS and Kesha in that order).

Usually, yes, but most of his career has been in the physical singles era.
It'll probably be more difficult to persuade them to download this track

I think plenty of their earlier stuff is funny without context, Business
Time, Jenny, Issues, Albi the Racist Dragon etc...it had to work as part
of a stand up (well sit down) show after all.

This record probably does rely on the context of the TV show a bit more,
and the investment made in the characters. Although some of the
pastiches are good enough to pass as the real thing. Carol Brown is
arguably as good as 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover for instance.

Well, ISTM if those twins go on to win it, they'll be another 'Leon

Good point.

Incidentally, there was a rumour this might be the X-Factor winner's single
but that now seems off the agenda.

It doesn't really matter though, when they're not going to win anyway.

Are you sure? Cowell's already had 2 chances to kill them off, yet
despite what he's said about them, hasn't seized the chance...

But at the moment, it's entirely in his interest to have them on the show
because of all the publicity they're generating for the programme.

Gaining publicity, but losing *credibility*, since better singers are
losing out. It's also been suggested that if it were his *own* acts that
were threatened by the twins, he'd boot them without a second thought...

Yeah, I don't really think I believe that. I don't think anyone cares that
