Masculinity is explored throughout your work. Do you think boys are more confused and complex than ever? There's a difference between how boys一or young men一are being portrayed in the visual media and how they portray themselves. In the visual culture there's this tendency to carve some sort of Page Three variation of 'the boy一，which is a bit cute, a bit ditzy, a bit shirtless, a bit pouting, a bit tattoo-laden but ultimately very passive. On the other hand there's the real-life version whose biggest concern is actually boredom and how to escape it. They have already sussed out all the machinations behind porn, ultra violence or politics, which makes it harder to take in all of these things in a non- cynical way. They're lost, but at the same time their minds are brimming with information. Masculinity and everything that goes with that territory is a major theme in my work, although I hesitate to call it a theme because that would mean I conscientiously set it out to be one. I guess it's just another subject matter, a means to tackle the topics that are important in everyone's life. But there are areas that I think aren't addressed enough, maybe because they're somehow camouflaged or brushed aside. Things like male docility, male vanity but equally male gentleness or male insecurity. Every human being is very
complex; it's sometimes easy to forget that. A major shift has been that the ban on male beauty has been completely lifted. Anyone anywhere can now openly state that a man is beautiful without getting a reaction or snide remark, mainly because today's boys will go to great lengths to be called just that, 'beautiful', sometimes with a vigour that supercedes that age-old machismo. It's like the new accolade. The intriguing thing is that those boys themselves are crazy about this destroyed beauty, this gothic decay. Lots of gore and corpses. I think it's no longer the shock element that draws them to it. Rather the sadness !think. which chines in with these times.
