At long last I have an answer to this, thanks to an email from
Christian Hellum who works at NBC - here's what she wrote:

* You ask about the reason for the "In Loving Memory of Gail Joseph"
* appearing in front of the episode in which Ross bleaches his teeth.

* Gail Joseph was NBC's Director of Electronic Publicity and Talent
* Relations for comedy-series - and she handled the show FRIENDS. Gail,
* who was my boss at the time, died tragically just prior to the episode
* being aired - so as a gesture of respect, the producers of FRIENDS
* included the statement.

* Gail handled EP&TR for all the Kaufman/Bright/Crane shows at the time.

* I hope this is helpful.

Thanks for that, Christian.
