I must admit that I haven't been watching Brookie so much for the past
couple of months, but still tune in occasionally.

Today I received a Brookie Mailing list and read that the woman who plays
Julia had died (sorry I don't know her name). When did this happen? I'm
sure I couldn't have missed it on this ng.

Probably returning to Brookie......

It was about a month ago, and we did discuss it here. We are all very sorry
because her character added a bit of fun and life to the programme. She hasn't
been written out of the soap yet, Max and Susannah still refer to her.

Having watched Brookie now for a number of years but having only been in
this ng for a week, I hadn't actually realised why she had been missing
from the soap. I am quite shocked to learn that Julia Brogan is no longer
with us..... The Parade won't quite be the same without her.

Apparently Julia is finally written out 'off-screen' during the upcoming
five-nighter. IIRC she goes to Australia or something like that.

What would have been really nice would have been if they'd put up a
little thing at the end of a Friday episode, perhaps, or the omnibus,
to say "Gladys Ambrose, 19** - 1998"; or perhaps dedicated an
episode to her, with an explanation, which you see from time to time.
E.g. the film (cue arty reference) "Il Postino", where the main actor
died before the film was released. It's a shame about the silence: in
a soap especially, all 4 million of us probably loved her dearly. (Was
it 4 mill.? Or even if not all of us, then several thousands, surely...)
Why don't we have a 'Best Julia Moments' thread? My faves are
when she goes all sniffy towards someone (esp. Max or Ron) who's
offended her strict moral code, sending them to Coventry single-
handedly.

Love,

A.

Yes, her death was rather sudden.

Possibly the nearest analogy previously was the death of Doreen Sloane
who played wife to Jim Wiggins and Mother to Katrin Cartlidge.

Does anyone remember if she was commemorated by Mersey TV?

Of course the situation was slightly different in that she was away
from Brookside for quite some time (due to illness) before her demise.

There was no attempt to prove anything.
My post was to draw attention to the differing reaction to the deaths
of Gladys Ambrose and Doreen Sloane.

My impression is that Gladys is more fondly remembered than Doreen but
is that just because the former death is more recent?

Who was Doreen Sloane?

Doreen Sloane was the actress who played the part of Annabel Collins
who was married to Paul. They lived at Ron Dicko's old house. She died
a number of years ago of cancer I think.

I think its probably because Doreen died quite a few years ago, and more
recent Brookie watchers won't remember her character. I also think that
Julia was a more likeable character than Annabelle, not to cast any
disrespect on Doreens acting ability of course. For what its worth, my
dad met Doreen Sloane about a year before she died, and said she was a
really nice woman.
