She went to Univ. in Exeter (or similar) and ending staying
there, maybe came back for Damon's funeral? But basically just
faded away - actually I think she became a journalist, so maybe
she came back once or twice (for christenings and the such-like)
>Bobby Grant
Well as you prob. know: him and Sheila had a painful splitting up
process and he moved out (and essentialy out of the series) - she
got involved with Billy Corkhill, with plenty of complications
caused by return of Doe Corkhill and Barry "Oedipus" Grant not
liking his Mummy having a boyfriend. Bobby may have popped up once
or twice: very anti the thing with Corkhill as Bobby was strong
union man and Billy Corkhill did a bit of work for some capitalist
once (long story).
Anyway long and short of it Bobby is marrying some younger woman
from the union (poss. a storyline where he wanted a divorce and
tormented Catholic Sheila didn't?? must have been) Then it
transpires his new woman is having a baby - which is a shock as
Bobby had the snip after his and Sheila's Clare was born (remember
her much younger than her three siblings). Well he had the op.
reversed - I don't know whether this came before or after his new
marriage etc. So that's it he left the house when he and She split
up and returned for a while to argue about things like Corkhill
and divorce and poss. to see Clare as well, then as he got settles
and Billy and Sheila settled he withdrew into background. Then
Billy, Sheila and Clare moved to Basingstoke (or similar) and that
was it the link broken. So a gradual fading out and now his family
are scattered across the British Isles.
The scottish nurse whose name I can't remember
??? Did she live in house with another nurse (who perhaps got
shot?) and good looking Pat who became mad Pat?? If so she prob
left after once nice Pat had nearly raped her.
>The Collins Family
Rather a sad demise and falling away of a once strong family who
represented the middle class values that came into conflict with
the working class values of the Grants...
Loony, strong willed daughter Lucy left to live with lover in
France (older married man and all that I suppose) then returned
once or twice (a la that other great prodigal Bazza Grant) then
went back to France or whatever. Gordon, gay son, can't remember -
had a boyfriend went to live with boyfriend or boyfriend did
something nasty and scheming to him? so maybe he went to start a
new life .... that'll bug me now (I know someone ran hisa dog over
once).
Mummy and Daddy were left and gradually faded from storylines as
characters do (eg Fi in the salon) - not least due to ill health I
think. I have a vague feeling that the actress who played Mr.
Collins died in real life. I think her character was killed off
and Mr. Collins became a broken man and he moved away, no longer
the strident force he once was - this may be muddled but I'm sure
she died in real life (and the diminishing storylines prob.
connected with her having a period of illness.)
Apologies if I've muddled this with other facts.
>Heather (whose husband ODed)
I think she was a solicitor or was it an ad executive? (certainly a
succesful, professional woman) and she went off to London to start a
new life and some good job once she had come to terms with the
death of hubby Nick (who along with wayward friend Charlie was a
recreational user of heroin). Any EastEnders viewers? I just
thought Simon and Tiffany's dad might be played by he who played
Charlie?? (He looks familar whatever the answer)
Ah... fond and sad memories - particularly of Amanda Burton (Heather)
leaving!
As others have said, Karen went off to be a journalist and I haven't
seen the actress who played (Sheila O'Hara?) in anything else.
The Collins family leaving was strange - ISTR there was no warning that
they were going - it was just suddenly announced at the end of one
episode that they were moving out and that was it! I don't think they
even gave a reason. It is true that Doreen Sloane tragically died of
cancer (some of you may remember long periods during 1988 where she
either wasn't in the series or we saw her just sitting in the armchair
for the entire episode).
Sandra was the Scots nurse - she romped back to Edinburgh with a young
doctor - much to Pat's regret! The actress show played her (can't
remember her name) later appeared in a Taggart story - but I've not seen
her since.
I've saved the best for last... Heather! After the tragedy of Nick's
death and given her previous broken marriage to Roger, she decided 9
Brookside Close held too many bad memories and decided to get away,
initially moving back to her parents in Ireland and then to London, I
think, where she resumed her career in Accountancy. Yes, a tragic day
for us Heather fans when she left in Christmas '86 :-( Can it really
be eleven years??!!!
Actually it was Amanda Burton herself who wanted to leave, apprently
not happy with her storylines. The producers wanted her to stay but it
wasn't to be. She was then completely wasted in 'Boon' but I'm glad she
got that terrific part in 'Silent Witness'.
I think Brookie lost too many key characters in 88/89 - remember Harry
and Ralph went, too. This also started a period where ratings halved,
too.

Now this is plain peverse. Using the actors names to describe the
fictional activities they undertook *after* their acting roles ended!!
It's like you're talking in code. For a moment there I really though
Ricky Tomlinson (the actor) had got involved in politics as described

Actually, I believe Ricky Tomlinson was involved (as a political activist)
in one of the major disputes of the 1970s - so his involvement with the
Shrewsbury Two (he was one of them, don't know who the other was) predates
his appearance in Brookside - predates his acting career entirely, I think.
Subsequently he's gone on to appear in various excellent Ken Loach films
such as "RiffRaff" (which also had Robert Carlyle - who was Albie in the
first "Cracker" Ricky Tomlinson appeared in and "Raining Stones". The Ken
Loach/Ricky Tomlinson association seems to bbe a really fruitful one.

I'm reminded of something which happened regarding another
UK soap. A cast member receiving death threats sent by
viewers who disliked the character they played. There are
people sad enough to confuse actors with the characters
they play. Alan is doing a very good impersonation of
this.
> It's like you're talking in code. For a moment there I really though

To the best of my knowledge and belief he did!!!
One reason why he became dis-enchanted with Brookside was that the old
industrial roles of the early eighties subsided. When was the last time
that Brookside involved a real industrial dispute? they used to occur at
least once every two years in the early days.

I would love to do so but I cannot recall any of them specifically at
present. One way to find out would be to check out Spotlight, the guide
to all aspiring actors and check a few credits.
Does anyone know if Spotlight is available as an on-line web-site?
I do not use www myself as I have yet to understand the Netscape front-end
screen or to gain access to a search engine. I am one of those people who
stick to tried and tested MS-DOS rather than new-fangled products like
Windows-95 which reduce the size of the space bar on the keyboard.
However, to answer your question. I recall being impressed by what Katrin
did (on terrestrial television but pushing back the frontiers). Also she
has had an "interesting" stage career.

Hence (probably) my confusion. I'm got equally confused when you were
discussing Claire Sweeny, as I briefly thought that was "Sinbad's"
wife (not that he got married... you see my confusion).
Just out of interest, what do you do when a voung or animal is played
by multiple actors as often happens in films?
Plus your argument of looking in the Radio Times doesn't work when
discussing characters played by less well know actors many years ago
with someone (like me) with an appalling memory for names... and
I *refuse* to buy a dictioanary just to decode a few interesting
Usenet posts.
Never mind.. it's educational for us all.

I would need someone to back me up with actual facts but I would strongly
dispute the claim that Picture Box and Tales Of The Unexpected shared the
same theme tune.
Along the same lines . . . does anyone know which ITV panel game changed

It was Give Us A Clue, originally with Micheal Parkinson, then with
Micheal Aspel (or is that the other way round) - they used the theme
tune from Grange Hill, which I think, BTW, was much better in the days
of Tucker & Co. But then I'm 29 now, so shouldn't really be watching

I have often thought the same, as I've tried in vain to find it on any
TV channel (must be a Mersey TV thing). However I suspect it's to try
and avoid having to pay copyright or re-broadcast fees to the
makers/stars of the programme concerned - Coronation Street has been
mentioned occasionally, to try and give that "real life" feel, but I
suspect if they were actually seen *watching* it, it would be
expensive for Mersey TV.....

There was once a special Mersey TV thing called Meadowcroft Park. They
realised that a fundamental difference between Brookside and real life was
that no-one in Brookside watched (and talked about) soap operas. So, as a
media project with local schools (I believe) they got together and produced
Meadowcroft Park, which characters would refer to in passing. I remember
Max Farnham saying that Ron Dixon reminded him of a character in Meadowcroft
Park (and I'm not going to even attempt to translate the implications of
that into Rayner-ese!).
Meadowcroft Park seems to have vanished; why don't they cross-fertilise with
their other production - Hollyoaks? You could have characters in one
discussing what's going on in the other and - as both are produced by Mersey
TV, there should be no problem with getting out of synch!

Yes it was funny seeing Bobby Grant, as a builder, naked in a bath
in a house that was owned by people he didn't even know: in
RiffRaff. :-)
And Raining Stones was funny too. BTW wasn't the chap who played

This is a great programme. I do not know the plot but I really enjoy the
music. Can anyone advise what it is called and whether it is available
publicly? There was a time when it was aired less frequently and I like
many others (I'm sure) felt deprived. Fortunately Mersey Television has
seen fit to give us an occasional fix again.
It is a nice homely tune - like the Archers theme music on Radio Four.
