1. Introduction
---------------
Who is Scrawn?
--------------
Scrawn is better known as Mark Radcliffe, a DJ for BBC Radio 1. He was
born in Bolton, Manchester, England on 29th June, 1958.

Who is The Boy Lard?
--------------------
The Boy Lard is Marc Riley, born in Manchester on 10th July 1962. He is
currently a hapless sidekick to Mark Radcliffe, and purveyor of quality
catchphrases.

Who is Patrick the Studio Audience?
-----------------------------------
Patrik Gallagher's a bloke who went to work on a cruise ship
apparently. He was last seen at a Shirehorses gig at Nynex Arena in
Manchester. Not much is known about this follically challenged chap,
except that he was chief Pixie/Pirate dancer on the Breakfast Show and
used to sit in the studio clapping at various points. He was the butt of
many jokes but was a hit with the girls. He hearelded from Burnage,
Manchester and has a brother. Anyway he left ages ago so it
doesn't matter.

Who are The Shirehorses?
------------------------
Purveyors of fine quality music and have even had an album released. ,
which managed to climb to the dizzy heights of #22 in the Hit Parade. The
line up is usually Scrawn and Lard. Technical bloke Chester's Dark Prince
Of The Mandolin (aka Chris Lee) and Scrawn and Lard's former producer,
Chunky Rhys Hughes (aka Picknose) also have starred at various points.
The band have done gigs and everything.

What was the Graveyard shift?
-----------------------------
The Graveyard shift was their old time slot. 10p.m. until 12 midnight,
Monday to Thursday.

What was the Breakfast Show?
----------------------------
It was a dog (ask a silly question, get a silly answer!) Okay, it was
their first major daytime slot. Mondays to Fridays, 7am until 9.

Where can I listen to them?
---------------------------
BBC Radio 1 broadcasts on 97-99 on the FM waveband. You can hear them
every week day on High Tea And Tosspots, 2pm until 4pm, Monday to Friday.
You can also listen via RealAudio at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/listeningbooth/listeningbooth.html

2. About the R1 Show.
---------------------
Why do they have such ridiculous nicknames?
-------------------------------------------
Their names came about from their days as presenters of the Radio 5
programme, Hit The North. They were occasionally joined by him of the
papier mache head, Frank Sidebottom, and all three of them had names.
Scrawny Boy, Lardy Boy and Pumpy Boy (Sidebottom).

A brief history.
----------------
The show in its old form ran from 25th October 1993, when they had
Tindersticks in session and poet Simon Armitage, until February 6th 1997
when they had Tindersticks in session, and um, poet Simon Armitage
(coincedence that!) Every night usually had a guest from the world of
poetry, art, comedy, journalism, sport, tv or films. Also, most nights
featured a band in session, who played live from a basement
studio. Before this show, Mark used to present the Sony award winning
Out on Blue Six weekly on Radio 1, Skyman and The Guest List. The pair
were also presenters of the Radio 5 show Hit The North. Prior to this,
Mark Radcliffe has been a Producer, DJ and later head of music at
Piccadilly Radio. Lard was in the Fall and Marc Riley and the Creepers,
contributed to a comic called Oink! and was a record plugger for 4AD and
Factory Records.

Were they originally going to move to the Drivetime slot?
---------------------------------------------------------
In December of 1996, Radio 1 announced their new schedules. They showed
that Mark and Lard would be moving to the Drivetime slot at 4p.m. to
6p.m. from 17th February. After much consternation, and even a petition
begging them to stay at the old time, Mark announced that they were
moving of their own accord, but would be taking their unique brand of
humour, and fantastic records with them. Huge sighs of relief were
blown, until a few days later in mid January, the increasingly
unpredictable Chris Evans announced his resignation from the Radio 1
Breakfast Show. Mark and Lard had already filled in for Evans many
times, and so were the natural choice to Matthew Bannister, Radio 1's
controller. After a week of media frenzy, the duo were announced the new
presenters of the Breakfast Show, promising more of the same quality
items and a move away from the usual chart oriented playlist, which has
transpired to only allow Mark to play one 'own-choice' record per half
hour.

It wasn't to be though and Scrawn and Lard just couldn't bring in the
listeners and on October 10th they hung up their alarm clocks, to be
replaced by Kevin Greening and Zoe Ball. They were given the afternoon
slot, now called High Tea And Tosspots, where they seem to be much
happier.

The Shirehorses/Hoarse Brothers, do they copy other peoples songs?
------------------------------------------------------------------
The Hoarse Brothers are a 1940's Music Hall act who have had their
archive recordings dug up by Mark and Lard. These recordings bear an
uncanny similarity to present day songs. The Shirehorses are a
supergroup who have had their records pillaged by todays acts. There is
a link to their homepage here:
http://www.maingate.demon.co.uk/marknlard/shire.htm

Are you talking out of your arse, mate?
---------------------------------------
Yes, I am. The Hoarse Brothers, Shirehorses as well as Peela Tater and
Dick Cave and the Bad Cheese are in fact Mark and Lard, and the archive
recordings are none other than badly done copies with different words.
Songs done so far include:
Dick Cave and the Bad Cheese with Riley Minogue
- They call him the hapless boylard. (Wild Rose)
Dick Cave - Ballad of Franny Lee (Ballad of Henry Lee)
Baby Bloke - You're a Bastard/ You're Gormless
The Chemical Toilet Brothers
- Crap Shockin' Beats (The Chemical Brothers)
Cocteau Twins - Bluebeard
Edwyn Collins - A Girl Like You
Flush - Single Bloke (Lush)
Gazebo - Lardy Boy (Placebo)
Hoarse Brothers - Je t'aime
Hoarse Brothers - That's Nice (Minty)
Moronico - Sha lala la la lalala....(Monaco)
Pantson - Plums Drop (Hanson)
Peela Tater - Tattva (Kula Shaker)
The Shirehorses - Our first gig (The Seahorses)
Sleeper - Ugly Bleeder (Inbetweener)
Frank Spencer Blues Explosion
Supergrass - Shite (Alright)
You are the Sunshine of my life
The Ra-Gnomes - Joe's F****d Off / Shena Easton Punk Rocker (The
Ramones)

and a ton more that I've forgotton.

Lyrics to these songs are available from:
http://www.maingate.demon.co.uk/marknlard/songbook.htm
http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Academy/songbook.htm
http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/6552/fsong.htm

What music do they play?
------------------------
The Graveyard Shift played anything good. The range of music was quite
diverse. From current favourites through 90's indie, 80's synth pop, 70's
rock, 60's psychedelia and 50's Rhythm and Blues, anything went, and there
was rarely a duff tune.

Since the move to daytime, the music has had to change and the show is
tied quite a bit to the playlist (available at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/newsroom/playlist.html) However Mark and Lard
do get to pick a fair few of the records, especially new singles that they
like, that just wouldn't normally get played on daytime radio.

Mark and Lard are not affraid of mentioning their difference of opinions
between their own tastes and the songs on the playlist, and rightly so.

Quality Items and characters.
-----------------------------
Shit Agent - A theatrical impressario.

Pixie Dancing.
--------------
Nobody was prepared for the day that Pixie Dancing was unleashed upon an
unsuspecting world. Who could have thought that the sight of a grown man
dancing by the side of a main road would attract the attention of
National Newspapers and not the local Loony Bin? Pixie Dancing has been
one of the great successes of the Breakfast Show. Hundreds of people
turned up at 5 to 9 every day for a couple of weeks outside BBC
Manchester on Oxford Road, to dance with Patrick the Studio Audience as
he jigs to Pixie music dressed an a costume from Santa Claus the movie.
It's amazing that it all started with a remark from Scrawn that Lard's
new shoes looked Pixie like!
Although the feature officially ended on June 20th 1997, it was revived
for the Breakfast Show Tour (between 22nd and 26th September 1997.)
If you want to learn how to Pixie Dance, or read a pictorial history of
it, try here:
http://www.maingate.demon.co.uk/marknlard/pixie.htm

Mark and Lard at Glastonbury.
----------------------------
Mark and Lard presented a special Glastonbury Breakfast Show on Fri 28th
June 1997, live from the festival site. This tied in with the appearance
of
the Shirehorses later that day at the festival on the NME stage.
Despited the Mud playing havoc with the equiment the show was
great. They had special quizzes (including the Stone Wheel Of
Misfortune) and live performances from the Seahorses
and Embrace, as well as Lard pixie dancing in a puddle (allegedly with
Thom Yorke from Radiohead!)
The show climaxed with a performance of "controlled anal voicing" by Mr
Methane.
In the programme following, Funky Si played the first track from the
Shirehorses set. Straight after the Shirehorses had left the stage it
was closed for five hours becuase it had sunk into the mud. Strange
that!

3. Extra Curricular Activities.
-------------------------------
TV.
---
Mark and Lard have presented 2 Top of the Pops, in April and May 1997.
You can listen to and read a transcript of the shows here:
http://www.maingate.demon.co.uk/marknlard/totp.htm

Room and has also presented 4 goes to Glastonbury, a look at the
Glastonbury festival. He's also appeared on numerous local (UpNorth) TV
shows. Mark and Lard have appeared on BBC2's Pulp Video, in a sketch
called WOT! They also presented a program about a 1997 Manchester Music
festival They have also done adverts for Television, such as the Best
Album in the World Ever! series.

Radio.
------
Radcliffe has presented numerous documentaries on the history of modern
music, including retrospectives on Bob Dylan, Bob Marley and Rock and
Roll. Lard has presented a documentary on Kula Shaker, and a series
on Punk.

Others.
-------
They have a monthly column in Vox magazine, and have appeared in Loaded,
the NME, Melody Maker, Select and SKY. They presented the 1997 NME Brat
Awards. Radcliffe narrated the book: Oasis: Take me There, written by
Paul Mathurs, which is available on CD and Tape. Mark Radcliffe has also
signed a deal to write his autobiography.

4. Audio Treats To Take Away
----------------------------
So far there have been two Scrawn and Lard releases. The first to hit the
shelves was an album of seventeen songs by the Shirehorses. Available on
CD, Cassette and maybe even vinyl (though who really knows...), The Worst
Album In The World Ever... Ever! was released by East West Records at the
bargin price of under a tenner. It's avalible now in all good (and
probably all bad) bargain buckets everywhere.

"The Mark Radcliffe Show" released by BBC Worldwide includes some of the
good bits (apparently there were some) from the Graveyard Shift (as well
as a couple of bits from their early days of the Breakfast Show just
sneeking in there.) It is a good introduction to the humour that makes
Scrawn and Lard, Britain's most loved radio double act since Cynthia
Biggleswait and Fred Dobbesman on Davenport Hospital Radio (probably.)
Avaliable on CD and cassette, released by BBC Worldwide.

There was a;sp a Hit The North compilation tape featuring former session
guests, called Seconds Out - Round One.
