Can anyone PLEASE tell me what the "quasi-classical" piece is played
during the BBC Newshour? They play small bits of it, then a longer
very haunting versions with a descending bass line that's very
serious. I think it's all performed on synthesisers (that sound like
strings).

Thanks from a U.S. listener.

since no one else seems to have answered this one....

I'm trying to remember here but will go and double check...

The Newshour suite of music - the one that sounds a little like a film score
;-) was written for BBC World Service's Newshour programme by David Arnold -
who rebranded all the World Service music a year or two ago. As far as I'm
aware, it was stated that all the rebranded music should be played by a
proper orchestra rather than synthed and - this is a little sad that I know
this - there are 7 different versions of the Newshour music - one for each
day of the week with subtle differences - so subtle that I have no idea what
they are but trust me there are 7 versions!

I hope that helps

Great heads-up. Must say I never noticed it myself, but today
I've heard 3 different versions. I think they probably save the
most different version for the 1200 GMT news (perhaps a bit
a'la Big Ben).

cheers

I'm sure I'm not imagining this, but since you posted this
they've been playing different versions, quite distinct ones.
I have never before heard the ones they're playing these days.

It's difficult to say...

each news programme has its own music - e.g. World Update, Newshour, World
Briefing etc - and then there's the news prelude and Lilli - also known as
"funiture". Of the programme music, Newshour is the only one with different
versions for each day.

Some changes did occur last week to the schedule - the 5 minute straight
bulletins which started at the top of the hour were replaced with 5 minute
illustrated bulletins which start at 1 minute past the hour. This has meant
that a 1 minute headline sequence has been inserted and this uses some new
music.

I don;t know about other changes but could be!

Yes! Thank you mates! You got it!! I actually got a brief response
from BBC stating that these were writtne by David Arnold (and I later
found out it's NOT the famous film composer who scored many films) and
that these works were not available commercially. But since NPR (Nat'l
Public Radio here in the states) has marketed "All Music Considered"
to accompany "All Things Considered" news program, perhaps World
Service will consider a David Arnold BBC "compilation" <grin>. The
World Service theme I particularly like is the one you say sounds like
a soundtrack (since it sounds a bit like the stuff I write and it's
played about halfway through the program -- alas by synthesizers.

They really should consider having a real enseble play this as it's a
great and fairly serious theme. I wish I could track down this "other"
David Arnold somewhere!

Thanks for your input and interest.

As far as I am aware it is the David Arnold of Bond fame... and we were told
that it wasn't done on synths - I'll check it out and write back... Is it
the Newshour music you like?

Hmm, that's interesting, I posted to the DAVID ARNOLD SHRINE
(http://www.msu.edu/user/perrinet/arnold/ -- this guy seems little
obsessive), and he says it is NOT the David Arnold of film fame, but
how ironic would that be that there are two David Arnolds who write
"soundtrack" type stuff! I think you are right, and BTW, I too have
started to notice them playing different variotion on the one that I
like that seems to be played during World Service, World Today ro
something like that...I'll try to record it and put it on my site if I
can.

Could someone please send me a copy of the newshour music in an mp3 format? I so much like the jingle and have been trying to download it from the internet for a very long time now. I have even asked a number of people to help but none seem to have an idea on how to get it. I await your kind responses.

Is this perhaps what you were looking for?

I've been trying to find the npr bbc newshour music (in the background when they say the contributors) and I can't find it anywhere.

Hi!

They've recently changed the program's identity. Does anyone know where I could listen to the theme?

Hey Carlos- I happened to have been listening on the day when they changed the theme back at the end of August. Apparently it's only the 3rd time they've done so in 26 years.

I don't know who the new producer is- been trying to find out for months, but the music is light and simple with modern digital/minimal design and will probably last another 10-12 years with NewsHour.

It took over an hour but I did locate the brief BBC Radio news intermediate sounds/songs/theme - I learned that the one(s) I have heard and like are called "countdowns" - at least when they are used to close one episode or program / programme, or to prepare listeners for the opening of another.

The composer is David Lowe www.davidlowemusic.com

I discovered it extremely difficult to identify which of the dozens of Names (which unfortunately produce MP3 files with totally unrelated filenames consisting solely of 2- or 3-digit numbers). Hope this is helpful to others!

Hi, Matti.
The Newshour music is readily available, but I wonder, if David Arnold also composed the idents for BBC World Service Radio's "[The] World Today", which theme ran from about 2001/2002 to 2006/2007:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGQpKcHQhVA
These are tunes I'm interested in, but have very little information about.

For 2007 and on, David Lowe was commissioned to renew the musical identities for World Service Radio. One example is available here from his own official homepage:
http://www.davidlowemusic.com/uploads/media/audio_30.mp3

Based on David Lowe's very good ident for World Service tv, then the older radio theme for "The World Today" might be stylistically somewhat similar (ish).

So here's a new one...I'm looking for an early 1990s BBC Newshour theme - the composer (which is not David Arnold), and longer copies of the open and close.

Here is the only snippet I have of it in MP3 format...

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Qsup6idrFvCOPdeH8KW-N98kHYU9Sx6w

The BBC radio archives department is not a lot of help, TBH.I've called them.

I'd take any archive of Newshour from that period.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Brad

I've been trying to find this everywhere but with no luck. I even asked colleagues at the WS but nothing.
