Every time a new series of ISIHAC comes round I become increasingly
concerned about the absence of Graeme Garden. As far as I can see, his
last appearance on the programme was in January 2016. He's now missed
two full series and has been absent so far from this one (he's not
billed for next week either). There's been no announcement of his
retirement from the programme. He still appears to be active on his
Twitter feed, and his photograph still appears prominently on the
programme's website.

I assume that his continued absence is due to ill health, but it hasn't
been confirmed. The only information I can come up with is that he
cancelled an appearance at the Slapstick Festival earlier this year due
to illness. I respect his personal privacy of course but a prolonged
absence like this is bound to lead to speculation, and I'm sure his many
fans would appreciate hearing some sort of statement. The show doesn't
seem quite the same without him.

There is no reason to assume any such thing. It seems to be a simple
choice to do less performing and concentrate more on the many production
irons he has in the fire with Random which have recently considerably
expanded with the I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again live tour and with
various other projects. One cancelled appearance due to illness does not a
life threatening condition indicate. It was probably a cold.

I'm not aware that there has ever been a formal notice of a team member's
'retirement' from any panel show on TV or radio, however many years they
might haver occupied the seat. No matter how long lived a series it is
still essentially ephemeral. People come and go. That's the very nature of
the business. And, in any case, absence, even for a number of years, is
not necessarily a permanent condition.

Despite the practice of Granny Weatherwax it is not usual for people to
festoon themselves with signs saying "I aten't ded!" just because they've
fallen out of the public eye for a wall. Your 'concern' seems more than a
little obsessive and intrusive. If and when there is news worth worrying
about I'm sure it will reach us in good time. In the meantime, no news is
good news, surely?

Well, in that case why not issue a simple statement saying "Graeme
Garden is taking a break from ISIHAC to concentrate on other projects"?
I can understand missing the odd recording here and there because of
other commitments, but I'd have thought he'd have tried to show up for
at least one recording in each series.

His agent is DAA Management (his agents are?), so you could ask it
(them?). Debbie Allen may be the senior partner, but who handles
(obligatory "ooh er missus") Dr Garden I don't know.

Do, as a concession to my poor wits, Lord Darlington, just explain
to me what you really mean.

I found this on the show's Facebook page:

"Vicki Holland

superfan :-) Has he retired? LikeShow More Reactions

Anthony Hobson
Anthony Hobson From what I can gather he hasn't been well this year, so
has had to step back from performing. He tweeted on 22 December:

"Many thanks to well-wishers. I had to cut back performing this last
year but am still writing, contributing and hoping to be back soon."

Maybe his Bell's Palsy came back?

Pleased to see that he's billed to appear in the first programme of the
new series starting next Monday.
