Nothing particularly surprising about this, except for the unusually early
release of a Comic Relief single. Presumably this was mostly to take
advantage of winning their made-up Brit award but it does also raise the
possibility of another "surprise" tie-in.
The song is of course primarily a cover of the 1979 Blondie track which was
a Top 30 hit in the US and is enjoying its first week in the UK Top 100 this
week. It also contains elements from 'Teenage Kicks' by the Undertones,
which has been released as a single in the UK several times but never got
higher than 31.

He had even less right than 1D to appear at the Brits, as they didn't even
bother to make up an award for him (and he wasn't eligible for anything
else). But he showed up anyway and did what was by most accounts a decent
performance of this half-baked song. It was considerably shorter than the
commercially available version, which is a good start.
> Top 20 : Ellie Goulding #13,
I presume this is picking up actual airplay now.
>Pink (JGMAR) #16
Usual dull whiny Pink song, which people seem to think is something special
for no apparent reason.
> Top 30 : Olly Murs (AOT) #23
A second single from his album seems to have been relatively late in
arriving, presumably due to the continued success of 'Troublemaker', but
here it is now. It's another testament to the effect that a video launch can
have if you're in with the video channels.
> Top 40 : Zedd #34,
Still featuring Zoey Deschanel/Katy Perry lookalike Foxes. Still not an
intereesting song.
>Script (IYCSMN) #36,
If you've been missing their early rapping-badly-in-American-accents style,
you'll love this.
> Tyler James (WAY) #38
As it turned out he did sneak in despite the Brits effect. But the record
company will probably still "Worry about him" - geddit!!???
> Re-entries T40 : Ben Howard (OL) #9,
A new peak for the mumbliest song in the chart.
> Mumford & S #12,
Not a new peak but a resumption of its former one, still their highest
placing to date on the singles chart.
>Robbie (Candy) #39
Like the other two, a Brits performer although his performance got at best a
mixed response.
> New Entries outside the top 40 (plus new peaks) : Lil Wayne #44,
Potentially another of his low-peaking gradual sellers.
> Example #49,
Wouldn't be far off Top 40 without the Brits effect. Will presumably outsell
his previous single if it hasn't already.
> 1975 #54,
I heard this song for the second time this week. I liked it even less than I
had the first time.
>Muse (Supr) #58,
Also played at the Brits, even though they seem to be thinking about the
next single already.
>Joe Cocker #64,
Not featured at this year's Brits, though I'm sure he has been nominated for
one at some point in the last 36 years.
Anyway, this is his new single and is doing surprisingly well under the
circumstances, even allowing that it's been one of Radio 2's most-played
tracks in recent weeks. It has more than a hint of Springsteen about it, or
to be more accurate of a Springsteen who needed to clear his throat.
>Ke$ha (C'Mon) #70,
Probably a bigger seller than the chart positions make it look.
> Re-entries T75 : Emeli Sande (NTM) #45,
Her biggest solo hit returns.
> Birdy (PHTP) #55,
Somebody remembered she'd done a song other than 'Skinny Love'!
>M&S (LLM) #63,
Their second biggest hit.
> Survivor #65,
Not Brit winners, unless they've introduced an award for most amusing
unintentional resemblance to Frank Spencer in a pop video.
> Emeli Sande (RAAB3) #68,
On her new live album (which appears in the DVD/video chart) she does this
song as a duet with Professor Green. Dunno why she thought of that.
>OD (LWWY) #74,
Not quite as much of a flop as it looked at first.
>Ben Howard (KYHU) #75
Once place shy of its peak.
> Albums

> Emeli Sande returns to #1 for a 9th (non-consecutive) week.
This Thursday I fulfilled two of my duties as a British citizen: I voted and
I downloaded this album. I shall listen to it while I write the rest of this
commentary.

> Top 5 : Nick Cave #3,
Despite the relatively tough weak, the highest placing he's managed in his
entire career. It's the first Bad Seeds album without long-term collaborator
Mick Harvey, who was also in his previous bands Boys Next Door and The
Birthday Party, but not in Grinderman.
Oh, and it has a naked picture of his wife on the cover. Isn't that more the
sort of thing you'd expect from Whitesnake?
> Ben Howard #4
An album I seem to have written about dozens of times before and I never
really had anything much to say about it in the first place.
> Top 20 : Alt-J #13,
Didn't win any Brit Awards, fortunately.
>Joe Cocker #17
If you're Joe Cocker and you need somebody to play guitar on your 23rd
studio album, who you gonna call? Ray Parker Jr, and some other people.
This album features most of the same team as his 2010 album Hard Knocks but
has charted much higher, possibly due to the popularity of the title track.
The more expensive deluxe album adds two more songs and a live DVD with
songs from the album.
> New entries/new peaks outside the top 20 : Louis Lester Band #53,
The fictional band from Stephen Poliakoff's probably quite boring drama
series Dancing On The Edge. This soundtrack has been rattling around the
extended chart for a couple of weeks but only now cracks the Top 75,
presumably due to people hearing more of the songs as the series progresses.
> Re-entries : Ludovico Einaudi #41,
Surprise re-entry of the week.
> XX (Co-Ex) #50,
Among the lower-profile Brits nominees.
>Killers (BB) #57,
As were they (this year at least). TBH, I'd already forgotten this album
existed.
> Florence (C) #61,
In and out every fortnight.
>Beyonce (4) #62,
A couple of weeks after the logical time for it to re-enter.
>Justin Bieber #65,
He's on tour in the UK at the moment.
> Train #69,
Presumably helped a bit by the airplay of their new single. But not a lot
because it's really shite.
> Vaccines #71,
Were they nominated for Band That Makes Jake Bugg Seem Appealing?
>Pibk (GHSF) #73,
Probably just a default one.
> Girls Aloud #74
Maybe this is on special offer to try and rescue it.
> Next Week

> Justin Timberlake could well be #1.
Possible but I can't quite see it somehow. Of course he does have a lot more
2s than 1s, maybe that's why. I can imagine Bauuer, Macklemore & RL or both
overtaking him early in the week.
> Top 5 : Bastille
Seems likely - certainly what their label will be hoping for after all the
hype.
> Top 10 : Laura Mvula
Dunno whether it can keep the momentum to this extent but we'll have to wait
and see.
> Top 20 : Paramore
Seems about their level.
> Top 30 : Wiley
Would be a major comedown after his last two singles went Top 3. Any reason
for that prediction?
> Top 40 : Dido,
She didn't manage it with the last album. I'm not sure she's even trying.
> Example
Yeah, I think he'll sneak in the lower end.
> There may be more unexpected OA/OS releases, though.
Possible.
There is an expected Bowie single on Tuesday, but who knows how it will
sell?
> Albums
> ------
> I would expect Emeli Sande to remain to #1 on the back of the Brit Awards.
Are those still going to be decisive?
> Top 5 :
> Top 10 : Josh Groban
It's nearly Mother's Day so I think he might go T5.
> Top 20 : Cribs, Johnny Marr
Nice juxtaposition, but if you haven't heard the Cribs album has been
postponed a month.
> Others : Bob Dylan,
Surely we'd have heard about it if he was releasing a new album?
>Ed Harcourt,
This does exist but I'd doubt whether he's big enough these days.
> Glee Cast,
This does exist but I'd doubt whether they're big enough these days.
>Michael Ball
I see the calendar and think T20.
Also:
Atoms For Peace are Thom Yorke's new band and will almost inevitably go T10.
Palma Violets are sort of the new Libertines. Steven Wilson is a veteran of
various prog acts who usually spend one week in the Top 30. Petula Clark's
had more publicity than usual this time, she could sneak T75. Caitlin Rose
isn't particularly well-known but she's doing well enough on Amazon to be
worth a mention.
