Paul Hyett, Cheltenham (change 'invalid83261' to 'blueyonder' to email me)
She recently had her breasts cast for charity. That's about the most
interesting thing I can find to say about it.
> New Entries/New Peaks
> ---------------------
> Top 10 : Eric Prydz #2,
Out tomorrow on CDs and 12"
>Rihanna #3,
Oh yeah, this is a climber isn't it?
> Biffy Clyro #5
Even if this is a non-album single, there must be some reason this seems to
be proving so much more popular than their other singles, but I can't hear
it.
Perhaps it's just that 'Mountains' isn't too bad a title by their standards.
> Top 20 : Glasvegas #12,
Second consecutive hit from the Scots, following a well-received season of
festival performances.
As the title suggests, 'Daddy's Gone' is a rumination on fatherhood, which
seems oddly out of place
>Little Jackie #14,
According to the BBC's ChartBlog, the Egg McMuffin predates the Chicken
Nugget by some eight years. Aren't you glad you know that now?
>Alphabeat (BF) #15,
Not actually a one-track CD as I suggested but the second track is only a
cover version of 'Black And Gold', so possibly not a great selling point.
> Metallica (TDTNC) #19
Their first single in fifteen years to beat its original entry point, if
only due to the artificial effect of its being released part-way through
last week.
> Top 30 : Miley Cyrus #23,
Her first charting single under her own name, presumably as part of some
plan to launch her as an artist in her own right beyond the character.
Unfortunately for her, there's already at least one Avril Lavigne out there.
>Paul Weller #28
Her first charting single under her own name, presumably as part of some
plan to launch her as an artist in her own right beyond the character.

And his album's so late they've got time for another single.

>Chicane v Natasha Bedingfield #43,
Victorious in the little-noticed Battle Of The Dance Records Sampling
Members Of The Bedingfield Family.
I haven't actually heard this, but I can make an educated guess from the
title as to what its like.
>Duffy (SS) #49,
Some compensation as her album drops out of the Top 5 for the first time
since release.
> Metallica (MA) #51,
So I guess it is eligible then!
> Sonny J #55,

> LL Cool J #56,
Surprise climber of the week.
> Re-entries : Pendulum (PN) #63,
I suppose everybody's forgotten the last single now.
>Glasvegas (G) #75
Presumably from festival coverage.
> Albums
> ------
> The Verve claim their 2nd #1 album, 12 years after their first.
Well, 11 years. Or ten years and 11 months if you want to be really exact.
If you want to split hairs, this is the first chart-topping album by the
original line-up of the band.
Forth (see what they did there) naturally contains the current hit and nine
further tracks, or eleven on the vinyl version. There's also a CD/DVD combo
with a documentary and some live tracks.
> New Entries/New Peaks
> ---------------------
> Top 10 : Slipknot #2,
Their third consecutive Top 5 album, ignoring the live disc.
I remember somebody from the record company being interviewed after their
Number One album seven years ago and explaining why the last week of August
was such an opportune time for them to release.
The digital single 'Psychosocial' also reaches a new peak, in the now common
pattern.
>Eva Cassidy #4,
Eclectic Top 5 we have here, isn't it?
Her first album in four years apparently, but no less than her seventh
posthumous release. And yet none of these songs have appeared on one of hers
before, and two were even co-written by her.
>Michael Jackson #5,
And so the self-crowned King Of Pop returns with another Greatest Hits set,
supposedly compiled from a fans poll (although it was turned round
suspiciously fast). A deluxe version is released next month.
>Game #9,
Not that he has a lot in common with Slipknot artistically, but his timing
was probably as careful as theirs.
>Teddy Thompson #10
More unexpectedly, his fourth album not only cracks the Top 100 for the
first time but makes him the first member of his family to reach the Top 10.
This may be a beneficiary of his decision to adopt a poppier sound courtesy
of producer Marius De Vries.
> Top 20 : Dragonforce #18
Fourth album from the British hard rockers.
A deluxe version adds two bonus tracks (to the original eight) and a DVD
with making-of documentaries for the album itself and their customised
guitars.
> New outside the top 20 : Shaggy #22,
Presumably TV-advertised, as some people must have known it was coming out,
Boombastic Collection is the album of hits you might expect, and to give
credit where it's due the compilers have obviously made the effort to deal
with other labels so all four of his Number Ones are here.
>Abba (18H) #24,
Doesn't actually contain 18 hits of course.
>Automatic #44,
Even as the single holds up better than might be expected, people are
clearly not confident enough to invests in the full LP.
>Jon
Joe
> Bonamassa #45,
Live From Nowhere In Particular - I wonder what the fire limit is there?
Anyhow, this is the second in-concert set from the hotly-tipped blues
guitarist, who gets through 14 songs in 100 minutes.
>Glen Campbell #54
Meet Glen Campbell is a set of (relatively) contemporary covers, although
unlike the Johnny Cash albums that may have inspired it, it's produced in a
similar style to his vintage recordings. The single is his interpretation of
Green Day's 'Good Riddance' whilst other tunes come from the pens of Dave
Grohl, Lou Reed, Tom Petty (twice) and our own John Lennon and Fran Healy.
> Re-entries : Josh Groban #32,
It must be too much of a coincidence that this re-enters and Buble climbs.
> Abba (MAG) #63,
Repackage of the album that possibly should have been called Abba Silver,
originally issued in 1993 and re-issued in 1999. It mops up some of the
lesser hits that didn't make the cut for Abba Gold (most notably 'Summer
Night City', 'Honey Honey' and 'The Day Before You Came') as well as
selected album tracks and the previously unreleased track 'I Am The City'.
>Metallica (Met) #70,
Possibly helped by downloads.
> Dre Straits (BIA) #73
What is this, Mark Knopfler's new hip-hop project? ;-)
> Next Week

He may very well, since I'd imagine him to sell more physicals even if it is
a fair fight. Mind you, I don't know what the margin was this week.
> Top 5 : Pussycat Dolls (if downloadable)
Good question. It is currently 31 on iTunes.
> Top 30 : Duffy,
Probably about the best she can do, not that it matters.
> New Kids On The Block (more like pensioners now!)
They're even older than me.
It's hard to tell how many people really are interested in this single
(although I can see five people who aren't).
> Top 40 : Bryn Christopher,
This is a bit of an odd one - it's a larger-scale release than his first
single, but not as many people seem interested in it.
>Mariah Carey,
Is this actually being released?
>Flo Rider (ITA)
Possibly.
> Any other possibilities (including new download releases)?
Well, I know the Gym Class Heroes track is out on downloads. But I don't
know if anyone cares.
> Albums

> Having seen no midweek sales figures, I have no idea what sort of a margin
> The Verve had, but given the competition, I can see them having a 2nd week

All I know is it was 2k after Sunday and Monday, and I'll make an educated
guess that it widened after that. But surely it's their actual sales that
matter more than the gap?
> Top 10 NE : Chemical Brothers,
Yes. But is it just me or has there not been much promo?
> Top 20 NE : Brian Wilson,
Possibly although this too is a relatively low-key release over here.
> Miley Cyrus,
Possibly not.
> Motorhead
Haven't charted an album in donkey's years.
> Others : BWO,

> David Byrne,
If you mean that one with Brian Eno, it's apparently download-only.

Billy Ray Cyrus will be confused.
Sorry, bit of a cut & paste error there. Here's what I actually wrote for
this slot:
Like his previous release, this is billed as a double A-side, but isn't
really one because the second 7" format doesn't include 'Push It Along',
featuring acoustic versions of 'All I Wanna Do' and 'Pretty Flamingo'.
The CD single also includes a vocal version of 'Big Brass Buttons' but
unfortunately they're by Bobby Gillespie.
One reason I mention those B-sides was that the digital equivalents of the
formats were apparently on iTunes last week, but evidently didn't sell in
that form.

I think the main factors were that kids were all in the shops getting their
stuff for the new school year and adults had their payday at the end of the
month. One other factor they might have had in mind this year would be
coinciding with the Reading Festival, but they ended up not playing anyway.

Indeed so, and I'm not touting it as a major revelation. But it is an
interesting data point - presumably part of the reason why his singles tend
not to sell well digitally is because the fans who buy most of them want the
whole package with the B-sides etc - so here they were given an opportunity
to get all that a week before they could get the physical versions and they

I suppose that's true, although 'Candy Girl' does have that thanks to an
actual high-pitched kid (far be it from me to call him annoying, but he did

awareness, that Kylie & Anastacia ought to be in there somewhere.

I don't think he/the record company particularly refused to promote the

Perhaps, but the fact remains that any artist dependant on physical
sales nowadays, will be at ever more of a disadvantage, especially
if/when HMV, as the last high street outlet, stops selling physical
singles (except perhaps on special order).

The song made only a modest climb to #16 in the last 24 hours, so it
seems unlikely to challenge for a top 3 spot in the near future.

True, but ISTM that the HSM movies & Hanna Montana are surely aimed at
exactly the same people, so there's bound to be a big cross-over.
Ours is long-gone, but for the record (er, no pun intended!) last time I
looked the big one on Oxford Street was still selling them. The only other
one I've been in since was a really small one near Liverpool Street station
which probably wouldn't have anyway.
Zavvi.co.uk still sells CD singles, although with a starting price of £4 I
can't imagine they shift many of them.
BTW, you've probably noticed that the old Virgin Radio is now to be called
Absolute. Which obviously isn't the worst it could have been.

Yes, but that couldn't possibly have influenced their chart performance in
the early 1990s when most people didn't know what the Internet even was.

By the looks of it, that's already the case, although naturally as buying
them on the highstreet becomes more difficult, some customers will be driven
to downloads or to online sources of the physical product.
I suspect also that perceptions are changing.

Surely they'll want to try and recoup a little bit more of the loss first?
Mind you, their new guitarist used to be in yourbandnameis:rubbish, so he

Although it might be argued that they've already done a lot more for

Or perhaps they were too busy? Or not famous enough in America to be asked?
Possibly they think the whole exercise a bit pointless.

I think Kylie is fairly well known - 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' was
a big hit there.
I've never been able to figure out why Anastacia hasn't been able to

Yes *A* big hit, six years ago. That doesn't make her level of celebrity
there that she is here. I don't mean that as any criticism of her, but
perhaps she just doesn't play to whatever demographic they were aiming at
here?

It would seem an odd way to raise awareness. But I suppose it's congruent
with the non-promotion of this single.

Surely the whole point of a charity single is to appeal to as many
people as possible - and in any case, several of the US names are as

So did I - not one of her strongest songs.
I presume it's meant to sound like "Savvy", but it is an awful name for any
number of reasons. Pretty much its only saving grace is that it's not a real
word so they probably didn't have to pay much for the web domain.
The radio station name isn't anywhere near as bad (especially since
spellability is more important for a radio station) but it's a bit
underwhelming after all the suspense. Still, credit where it's due: they've
sacked JK & Joel.

It isn't, which I why I didn't claim that, despite what you may have
thought.

I doubt even Jim could fix it to be a success, though. :)
You still get the odd spin of the "classics" (not really on Radio 1 or Kiss,
but on stations that are aimed at an older audience than those). After all,
there'd have been no point in The Wombats doing a parody of the 'Wired For
Sound' video if nobody had seen it, would there?

Oh admit it!
What can "or new fans attracted by..." *possibly* mean as a response to my
saying that the old songs had climbed due to extra formats other than that
being an alternative explanation for the same thing?

There doesn't seem to be an album lined up immediately afterwards, so
perhaps the label are hedging their bets.
Other new singles I've heard recently: Dido (the real one this time),
Razorlight, Kaiser Chiefs, Snow Patrol, Leon Jackson. And Bloc Party have
sent me their new one, but I haven't got round to playing it yet.
Chris
That would be a parody of a joke...
>if nobody had seen it, would there?
I dare say a majority of R1 listeners weren't even born when that video
came out!

Didn't make a strong first impression, even on me.

Don't think I've heard any of those yet.

If it follows the normal X-F pattern, he'll scrape T40 with this, then
vanish without trace. :)

Personally? :)

Obviously their last one didn't generate a great deal of enthusiasm for
the follow-up, then...
Even now, I'm not entirely sure whether the 'Wired For Sound' video was
*supposed* to be funny or not. It was filmed in Milton Keynes.

If they're playing to the targetted demographic, then that's completely
true. But then not many Radio 3 listeners were born when Beethoven wrote his
Fifth Symphony, and that doesn't mean they won't recognise it.

Took me a couple of days even to remember that I'd heard it.

None of them is likely to surprise you much though.

Er, isn't this only his second single?
Tell you what though - in all the years I've been listening to him, the only
time I've ever heard Ken Bruce take a day off sick was the day of the Leon
Jackson premiere. Coincidence?

As if. In fact, the e-mails they sent announcing it went into my spam
folder. Note to record companies - sending out two HTML messages within
minutes that have "SINGLE" and "TOMORROW NIGHT" in the header is a good way
to avoid people getting to read them.

I was out that night, OK?
Chris
But he isn't still (trying to) write new material...

Exactly - and *relative* to other X-F singles, his first bombed...
