This person, as is well know, is currently Justin Eliot's best friend.
Last night we watched an Inspector Alleyn mystery on the Drama channel.

We have seen some of these before and the principal detective had always
been played by Patrick Malahide, but in this one, which seems to have
been the very first (in it Alleyn meets Troy for the first time) Alleyn
was played by Simon Williams.

Does anyone know why the change was made to Malahide?

Judging by the comment in the paper he was not available when the pilot
was picked up for the series.

I like P.M. Though not necessarily what I think of as typecast, he plays a
certain type of character so well.

Just to go really OT on the Simon Williams theme, did you know that
Justin's best friend's first wife is currently[1] married to Oliver
Stirling's best friend?

Nick
[1]FSVO "current" in that they have, I believe, been together for
quite a long time.

I'm very fond of the Ngaio Marsh books and have, I think, watched most of
the Patrick Malahide Alleyn ones, but have never been able to track this
particular one down. I'm not sure if we have the "Drama" channel on our
basic TV upstairs but could anyone please send me a link to this particular
episode? I have just searched in all the usual places without success.

It was the pilot episode* with the title 'Artists in Crime'. I can't find
a repeat on the Drama channel (158 on Freesat) in the near future.

*although it is listed as Season 3 episode 1 here

I don't know about that prog., but I don't think "Drama" is on FreeView
- I can't find it in the on-screen guide or in the Radio Times (at all
though!) - so, unless your upstairs TV has a connection to a dish, you
probably can't get "Drama" on it.

Mmmm, yes I found that. Interesting to see that Alleyn is played by Simon
Williams, and Inspector Fox by William Simons. However it doesn't seem to
be available on catch up.

Probably not, though it has a stick to make it smart. I've now found an app
which includes "Drama" but not alas anything on yesterday!

As others have said, John, the Drama channel is No 20. In the current
Radio Times (at least in the copy that I have) the Drama programmes are
listed in the right-hand column of pages 54,64, . . . 114. In particular
on page 74 in the r-h column about 3" down from the start of the
letter-press the Alleyn listing is given, with, as you say the incorrect
attribution (it says 2/4 Series 3, whereas it is clearly the first one
of all). In addition there is a photograph above the letterpress which
shows the principal characters from another series featuring a vaguely
aristocratic detective (The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, which were
actually shown the next night).
The Radio Times has gone to pot since the BBC sold it on.

Kent freeview reception hasn't improved since I left then?
I can see the transmission relay from my house but can only get basic
freeview channels here - still useful when I'm recording two channels on
different clusters on freesat and want to watch something on BBC1 or BBC2.

By downloading UKTVPlay I now have access to Freeview20 plus many many
others! However it seems unable to offer a catch-up for that particular
programme. I see that I can buy it from Acorn Media but it is bundled with
the Malahide set which I already have. Ah well. Thanks all for your input.

I wouldn't expect to get anything other than Freeview channels without
Freesat or a subscription. Drama is a 'basic' Freeview channel. If
you're not getting it try re-tuning. If you've got the option, choose
'First time installation' rather than auto tune.

I live in the upper Severn valley Steve and, with an indoor aerial* I
picked up on sale in eTsco, I can currently get most BBC channels and
intermittent '4' channels (but no S4C) - ITV sits there showing nothing but
not saying it has no signal.

When auto-tuning it runs through UHF channels 21-69 and manages to tune
even those with no signal. Doesn't really bother me - it does what I want.

I bought another little TV (and aerial) for the dining room thinking I'd be
able to watch while working in there but the signal is so iffy it just
causes frustration - OK for DVDs though.

I can't get a signal in the kitchen so that TV can only 'see' whatever the
freesat box is watching.

So Drama may be a 'basic' channel but I can't get it on freeview.

*When I first moved here there was not a roof aerial to be seen. Back in
the 50s-60s the local electrical retailers clubbed together and started a
cable relay service (so they could sell TVs). My house is wired for it
(overhead cables) but I have never subscribed - I can get (poor) pictures
on some channels through it though. The cable relay service is closing next
month - still very few roof aerials to be seen here.

In article <oab6g5$tmr$1...@gioia.aioe.org>,
Some Freeview channels are more "basic" than others. Small infill
transmitters, like the one across the valley from me[*], may only carry
the three basic PSB multiplexes with BBC, ITV and Channel 4's range
of channels. Drama and other UKTV products are carried on one of the
Commercial multiplexes and (I gather) are only provided on the 80
major transmitters, out of the approx 1,200 TV masts altogether.

[*] which provides Freeview service for the people in bottom of the
valley. Fortunately, being somewhat higher up, I have a good line of
sight to another infill transmitter as well as a more distant major
transmitter, both of which carry the full range of channels.
