As I have recommended Cobian Backup here in the past, I feel it is my
duty to share something I just found out (in version 10). In Tools >
Options > Engine, there is an item named "Safe mirror to ..." with
a checkbox and the path of a folder. If your backup tasks are set
up as "Mirror tasks" (in the "Advanced" properties of a backup job)
and the backup process notices that a previously backed up file no
longer exists at the source location, it deletes the file at the
backup location but just beforehand it copies that file to the "Safe
mirror" folder. I found that the folder had grown to more than 1.6
GB and contained files I had wanted to only keep in a more protected
place. So I've decided to uncheck the "Safe Mirror" option, and purged
that folder.

Thanks for the info, I only just discovered this, although mine had grown to 70GB!! grr, how annoying. Any way, I appreciate confirming what I had suspected about this check option. Cheers.

Wow - thanks for the info. Just discovered these folders and how much space they were eating up and wondered what the heck it was for.

Just adding that this is still an issue in 2021.

I recently rebooted my laptop only to notice that my C: drive was at 0 bytes available/free. I had recently done a windows update so I assumed that was the problem. And some time ago I had to extend my C partition. I now suspect this was the problem.

Around that time I had started using Cobian backup. Like many, I suppose, I prefer the 'mirror' option of backing up. (Something Cobian apparently doesn't like, lol...).

Using the free program FreeCommander XE I was able to look at the file sizes of my system folders. That led me to the Safe Mirror folder, which led me to this thread.

Anyway, this option was checked in Cobian.

Tools-->Option-->Engine-->Advanced-->Safe Mirror.

You can change the directory if you want to use this function but not have it be on the C: drive.

(Adding all this info in case someone else searches for it to make it more likely they end up here).
