9.43am Saturday 16th May 2001:

Setup has begun! The Gas BBQ arrived last night so thats all set! The
'normal' BBQ also is out and has been cleaned! The Privvy is ready for
use!! Wunderkind (a.k.a ME! - so yes that's 3 postings from me in the
last week!!) has just made an 'UMRAT' - it's a balloon rat! WE are all
thinking of you Sid and anyone else who sadly has to miss this wet, cold
rainy BBQ!!!!

Chris here now.

Our first thoughts this morning were of Hesky: The 'country' programme
that runs on R4 from 6.10am came from the Isle of Man, which as some of
us know was where Hesky's mum lived.

There's 2 huge polystyrene boxes of organic burgers and sausages and the
ribs sitting next to the bbq.

The various home made breads are TA character attributed:

Apple pie loaf: Lynda's loaf, to be eaten with cucumber
Rustic: Bert Fry
Granary: Jeck's loaf: mind you don't break your teeth on it!
70% wholemeal: eff's loaf. The upper crust's idea of a loaf.
Bran white: Caroline's idea of a healthy diet bread

Hazel has purple sprayed hair: its not that noticeable. I'm wearing at
present a dark purple long sleeved blouse but I have my umra polo tee
shirt (Hesky's order) on underneath, and I have a purple black and white
skirt on.

We planted up one of those terra cotta 'pigs' with parsley, with the
hope it would be full of parsley, but there are just a few sprigs
unfortunately.

The 'privvy' has a flat roof to it, onto which Toodles has put the
amplifier so we can all hear Chankel's words of wisdom.

That's the scene set: its anyone's guess who uses this computer next.

23:23 Westfield, East Sussex

Arrived home about an hour ago after a very long but enjoyable day.

08:40 We left Westfield for the drive to Reading, stopping first at my
mother's for an hour or so. Then on to Reading town centre where I
dropped Helen, Annie and Ada off so Helen could go and look at nappies
(real ones) while I continued to the station.
12:27 Rendezvous with assembled Umrats outside the 3Gs public house
where I was introduced to all present. Declining the offer of a pint
from Wing Co. Hankel, I was entrusted with the task of delivering 3
railway umrats (Linda FF, TNMF and Rosie) to the McMillan residence.
Obviously I had to go and get Helen, Annie and Ada (I can't write HA&A
here for obvious reasons) so I missed out on the early food.
Shortly after leaving the BBQ location I remembered why it is not a good
idea to drive around Reading on a Saturday afternoon as it took me
nearly 3/4 of an hour to do the round trip.

At the BBQ I ate, drank, talked, passed Ada around various adoring
umrats, tried to prevent Annie from totally destroying the plants/PA
equipment or bidding for any auction items. Nearly got the signed photo
of Charlotte "honey" Green, bought a tape deck, talked, ate, chastised,
and talked some more (there's some laughter in there too but can't
remember where exactly).

We finally managed to leave just before Michelle (who arrived first)
after I ferried three other railway umrats back to the station (via the
special scenic route the wrong way round the Reading traffic system) and
arrived back home about 22:30

At about 22:00 we gave in and let Annie listen to her new "Steps" tape
(thanks to whoever it was gave it to her :-) which cheered her up enough
to stop whining the rest of the way home.

Annie cried as she said goodbye to her face and cried even more when she
said goodbye to the flower on her arm.

So thanks to the McMillans, especially Hazel for tiring Annie out and
being so patient with all the children, Penny for the face/flower
painting, Liz for getting Ada to sleep and everyone else for being so
nice to Annie.

It really was lovely to meet you all at last, here's to the next one!

Charles - Helen would like the address of the shop the chocolate plums
came from.

Oh, one more thing, we listened to the Archive Hour - Humphrey Lyttleton
at 80, wonderful :-)

Well hopefully I've got a nice photo of her and Laurence with their
faces but as its the first one on a new film - and I'm not expecting to
use this camera again until mid-July, it'll be some time before I see
it.
