Just over three months ago I suggested that Nelson and Sophie's shared
enjoyment of the famous black satin sheets and Mahler's fourth symphony
may have resulted in the birth of a son to Sophie, and that she may have
named him Gustav in the composer's honour. It now seems that the child
of this union was, in fact, a daughter, and was named Janet after Dame
Janet Baker, the well-known interpreter of Mahler's lieder who presumably
sang beautifully about asparagus, artichokes, and other produce suggested
to Mahler by his agricultural story editor in the fourth movement on
Nelson's record of the same symphony. Sadly, this movement came after
the end of the broadcast. By the way, I think this was the penultimate
episode NOT to end with 'Barwick Green': the last was Doris's funeral,
concluded by 'The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, has Ended').

There is a possibility that Janet's father may not be Nelson, after all,
but David, since Sophie and David were a 'couple' at the crucial time.
Tantalizingly, both David and Nelson appear in next week's cast list
(Radio Times, Friday 26 Jan), together with Janet herself. Janet's voice
will not be a clue to her paternity, since she appears to have inherited
this attribute from her mother: she is played by Moir Leslie, the same
actress who played Sophie.

I am sure I am not alone in looking forward to hearing her voice again.
Shame on you Paddy <paddy...@ed.ac.uk> (11 Jan): we shall hear next
week how UNLIKE "being suffocated with a damp lettuce" she sounds.
May Janet's stay in Ambridge be a long one!

Of course, it's possible that Janet will appear at the Wine Bar and greet
Nelson as "Daddy", just as Rosie, the other daughter of whose existence
Nelson was unaware, did a few years ago. My guess, however, is that David
is to figure in the long-overdue Child Support Agency plot. It may be that,
having inherited Nelson's cunning, Janet aims also to inherit Brookfield
in place of Pip, who is really David's rightful heir. Could this be why,
according to next Tuesday's Radio Times 'teaser', "David considers Life"?

If my prediction about Janet is correct, this must be further evidence
that someone in the script team is getting ideas from this group.

Cheers,

Jonathan Wood.

I don't have my copy of next week's Radio Times with me at the moment but
there is a small item somewhere near the beginning (between pages 3 and 6
I think) which indicates, as far as I can remember, that Ambridge is to
get a female vicar (with Darrington) played by aforementioned Moir
Leslie. They did point out in this snippet that she had been in Ambridge
before as Sophie. I had originally assumed that this Friday's hint "A
village in shock" related to Martha, but it looks as though some things
are worse than death, namely female clergy.

I have in my mind an interesting scenario where Sophie, Eva Lenz and John
Tregorran both turn up in Ambridge for the day for a sentimental visit.
They are greeted in The Bull by Kathy Perks and Bert Fry, and the new
female vicar who is making the acquaintance of her parishioners. It would
not overstrectch the programme's actors' budget, and it would be
interesting to hear how well the characters slipped between voices...

How would they apply the rule of 7 ?
