Does Rochelle Exist, don't vote in this main thread

I'm about to start three sub-threads, one each for Yes, No, and It's
Complicated; please vote in one of them by replying to the appropriate
submessage.

Someone elsewhere has done the same thing in both Facebook and Twitter
and the voting is very different. I'm curious how this group votes and
I'll disclose the results from elsewhere later.

Why would she make her up? I was going to say that we hear Joy's
disappointment when a long-promised visit doesn't materialise, but maybe
I'm just imagining it. On the other hand, I don't understand why she
would move so far from a daughter who seems to be the centre of her
world, for no good reason that we know about, particularly if that
daughter is one who is unlikely to make the effort to visit even once in
the 21 months that we have been aware of Joy.

Of course, events mean that many of us haven't seen our daughters for
well over a year, but I get the impression that Rochelle would not have
have visted Ambridge even without covid, or welcomed a visit from Joy
either.

Thinking about it now, I still believe that Joy brought up a daughter
called Rochelle, who was into baton twirling. Whether something has
happened to her since, though, might be open to some doubt.

My contact with older daughter is limited too but more than Joy's.

Plausible (would that move the vote to "it's complicated"?), but I still
think she does still exist. (But then I'm in the minority that likes
Joy*, so that probably sways me.)

* I suppose - though I think of myself as cynical - I tend to see the
good side of people. Of the regular characters, I don't think I actually
dislike any of them (apart from obvious ones like Rob) other than Susan
(and maybe Kate). Even Brian, most of the time, I can _understand_.
(Same on UMRA: I've only ever killfiled one person, and that decades
ago, and that was because I _disagreed with_, rather than _disliked_,
him/her, and thought UMRA would be less boring for everyone else if I
didn't _see_ [and thus respond to] his/her posts.)

Maybe my wording 'continue to exist' would have been better. I too believe
Joy brought up a daughter of that name.

I can't credit my memory, just my archives, but on 12/12/19 (his 45th
wedding anniversary), Tony dropped in on Joy to give her some polish for
her Midget and she said that she'd been skyping Rochelle all afternoon
making plans for Christmas, she'd invited them all down to her new house
which was big enough for all of them.

After some time working on the car, Joy started crying and then admitted
that she was a liar, she hadn't been skyping, instead Rochelle had sent
a text to say that she was too busy to come for Christmas, in fact she
probably wouldn't see them until the new year. When Tony asked why she'd
said otherwise earlier, Joy said "Because I wanted you to think me
family loved me". Later she said that Rochelle always was a daddy's
girl, so perhaps she said that she was going to her dad for Christmas.
Joy also asked Tony not to tell anyone about this, she'd be mortified,
she'd done nothing but talk about Rochelle, if people really knew how
things really were ...
Tony promised not to. Just then the oven dinged, her beef casserole was
ready. She'd never got the hang of cooking for one, there was always too
much, which she had to freeze. Tony took pity on her and stayed to eat
with her.

Eventually Tony got home and was presented with a wonderful anniversary
present, and a special meal for just the two of them (everyone else had
gone out to make this possible). He had to admit that he forgotten their
anniversary, and let it slip that he thought it was only 44 years, but
wasn't going to let on that he'd already eaten.

I half wish I had the time and inclination to do that, answering such
questions wold then be much easier.

What I do have is a record of when each character appears, knowing that
we were talking about Christmas 2019, it was not difficult to work out
which episode it might have been (if it had been difficult, I would have
given up at that point). I was then able to find the relevant download
and listen to it, making notes.

T'other day, we were eating breakfast when Wofe suddenly got up & darted
into the kitchen & seemed to be squinting at the calendar we keep there.
She came back and said "Happy Anniversary."
I had forgotten, and she had only just that moment thought of it.

We are usually on holiday at this time of year & 'celebrate' with a pub
meal - not such a big deal whilst we are on holiday but much less common
at other times.
At one time, the closest thing we had to a 'local' was a pub in Cornwall
(we live in Wales).
